As a society, we have a crucial role to train and mentor the next generation of diatomists, across all subdisciplines. Our students need to have the benefit of a strong scientific training to compete for available jobs. Let’s continue to prioritize our students and early career researchers. For decades now, the field of taxonomy has been in decline across organismal groups, around the world. Collections are vital to our science, yet many collections are vulnerable to loss of funding. Let’s reinvigorate our collections working group to keep the importance of collections central to our organization. Despite a very low cost of joining ISDR, our membership continues to be at a low. Building membership supports our ability to train students, speak out for collections, and strengthen our network with sister societies. Consider purchasing a membership for a student! Let’s all take on the task of encouraging a colleague to join ISDR. I extend heartfelt appreciation to Ingrid Jüttner, Secretary, and Keely Mills, Treasurer, for dedication to keeping our society running smoothly and on a solid financial basis. Eileen Cox, long-standing Editor in Chief of Diatom Research, transitioned the EIC role to Ric Jordan. An enormous thank you to you both. I invite you to consider serving as an Associate Editor, as Ric builds an editorial team. Please join me in thanking Andrea Burfeid and Kálmán Tapolczai for leading an energetic and vital group of early career members. Finally, I appreciate all of you, our international community of accomplished experts, across a range of specialities. Together, we accomplish great things. I am proud of so much that we are doing to address the challenges: A. IDS 2025 in Kruger National Park is a reality! Everyone should know that organizing a symposium takes years of planning in advance, with endless details for the organizer to attend to. A wholehearted thank you to Jonathan Taylor for making the symposium a reality – and I just wish that I was present to be with all of you. I give great appreciation to the local organizing committee, scientific committee, Young ISDR, the Executive Council, and International Union of Biological Sciences (IUBS - https://iubs.org/) B. The strength of YoungISDR is our superpower! I am inspired by the ongoing engagement and participation by our students and early career scientists to build a supportive network across nations. Thank you to Kálmán for leadership and to all of our young scientists for building strong scientific connections with one another. If you are a student or recent graduate, be sure to join one or more of the many activities – blog posts, Diatom of the Month, calendar contest, and more. ## Early Career Researcher grants C. Early Career Awards reach across continents. We are now in the 3[rd] round of trial grant awards, made possible because of our sound financial standing (Treasurer' s report). Furthermore, the program has been promoted through numerous online sessions guided by Andrea Burfeid Castellanos. The program is possible through the feedback from review panels to review, discuss, and provide constructive criticism to applicants. Meeting format / location to be decided. 6- Treasurer's report ## • ISDR has a good financial standing December 2024 - £ 68,456.42 in Current Account - £ 5,346.58 in Reserve - Membership numbers have increased - 217 in 2024 (188 in 2023) - Low numbers from LMICs - Improved retention with Stripe - Auto-renewal captures members - Small number of payments fail ## • Website integrates payments & journal ## • Access via website - Majority of payments (c. 90%) via Stripe - Smaller number via bank transfer - Stripe enables an auto-renew function - Users in control of their data - Please use dashboard to keep your information up-to-date - Delivery addresses drawn from website - Treasurer cannot update your address ## • Not aware of any serious issues - Let us know if you are missing copies of Diatom Research - We cannot replace in later years as we no longer print ‘spare’ copies - Subscriptions run for the calendar year - 01 January to 31 December - Auto-renew is early January - If you sign up in June, you pay again in January - Notifications are sent if subscription renewal is unsuccessful - Trying to find a way to automate receipts - Very time consuming – currently offering an ‘on-demand’ service - Main sources of income - Subscriptions & Royalties - Main outgoings - Formerly journal costs - Recently grant-making (yay!) - 2024 a funny year as finances skewed due to the migration of bank account from Natwest to the CAF Bank – required as part of a structural change of the registered Charity status of ISDR - The Treasurer’s report was approved. ## **THE ISDR NEEDS YOU!** The ISDR is looking for a new Treasurer. After 13 years of service the current Treasurer would like to step down due to a change of role (a move away from diatom research) and increased responsibility in their day job. Can you help shape the role of the ISDR – speak to someone from Council or email the current Treasurer (Dr Keely Mills) at kmil@bgs.ac.uk 7 - Diatom Research Editor's report _Diatom Research_ is published by Taylor & Francis and they continue to offer consistent support. Printed issues appear twice a year. All papers are available online as soon as all proof stages are completed. 500 printed pages per annum. Generous allowance (ca. 16 pages/issue) for printed colour figures, but use colour only when essential. Use supplementary material to accommodate supporting information that is not strictly essential to the paper. High registration costs, need for professional conference organiser. - 1 meeting with joint morning sessions, parallel afternoon sessions. Meeting size, limited opportunities to interact. Joint sessions only to introduce all aspects of diatom research to all attendees, no parallel sessions as these would divide audiences along traditional lines. Rigorous selection of talks, majority of talks by ECRs. High interest in molecular studies; range of molecular topics could be expanded by including more presentations on phylogeny / diatom evolution. New collaborations, more combination of morphological and molecular methods; special event to meet potential collaborators. MLD attendees might outnumber ISDR members. Too many submissions, limited time and reduced opportunity to present on traditional topics of interest to ISDR members. Limited relevance to research by ISDR members, one or few topics might dominate; MLD 2025: most talks were on cell biology and physiology, few talks on phylogeny or molecular interaction between species. MDL uses diatoms as proxies, rather than study of diatoms as organisms. Molecular studies might benefit from support by taxonomists to improve taxon identification. Unlikely to recruit new members from the MLD group due to different focus of ISDR research. Information on the function of morphological structures / their relevance for identification. Potential to attract additional sponsorship. Generation of profit to invest in special event for ECRs. Joint meeting every 4 years. Contributes to the decline of organism based societies, meetings and science. Meeting in the USA: problems obtaining US visas – high costs, logistical problems organising travel (long waiting times for visa decisions, e.g. for students 1 month before meeting); colleagues from certain countries might be excluded because they might not be given visas. ## **Future meetings - general comments** Separate joint meeting ISDR/MLD with focus on molecular studies only, but not as a substitute to IDS.
