## Report of the Trustees
## for the Year Ended 31 December 2023
The trustees present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31 December 2023. The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019).
## **OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES Objectives and activities**
The objects, for which the charity is established as stated in its governing document, are:
1. To promote sustainable development for the benefit of the public by:
a) The preservation, conservation and the protection of the environment and the prudent use of resources and encouraging people of faith, particularly in leadership roles to take effective action to tackle climate change and conserve natural resources.
b) The relief of poverty and the improvement of the conditions of life in socially and economically disadvantages communities.
c) The promotion of sustainable means of achieving economic growth and regeneration.
2. To advance the education of the public in subjects relating to sustainable development and the protection, enhancement and rehabilitation of the environment and to promote study and research in such subjects provided that the useful results of such study are disseminated to the public at large. Sustainable development means development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
## **Ethos**
Faith for the Climate exists to encourage, inspire and equip faith communities in their work on the crisis of climate change. Faith communities have a unique and precious role to play.
The Faith for the Climate charity provides means by which people of faith working on climate issues come together to learn from one another and to encourage and support one another in our faith-based work on the climate crisis. We know that faith communities, by coming together, have a powerful witness, voice and role to play in the wider climate movement.
Faith for the Climate was founded as a network in 2014 and became a registered charity (Reg No 1194434) in May 2021. It's offices are at St John's, Waterloo Road, London SE1 8TY although its trustees are located across the United Kingdom in Scotland, Birmingham, London and Hereford. ## **OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES**
## **Our Partnerships**
Faith for the Climate is committed to work collaboratively with other organisations which share our mission. FFTC:
- is an active member of the Climate Coalition, which is the largest organisation dedicated to action against climate change in the United Kingdom.
- is the UK national partner-founder of the international climate justice organisation, Greenfaith International.
- co-chairs an informal advocacy based network of UK faith groups that work on climate justice globally; this is a legacy of the informal coalition of climate justice organisations, Make COP Count for which we provided secretarial support during and after COP26 and 27.
- is the only faith member of the working group of the Climate Justice Coalition (formerly the COP26 Coalition)
- has applied for membership of the Inter Faith Network UK.
We support people of every faith and every kind of faith-based action for the climate, including advocacy and prayer, lifestyle change and meditation, shareholder engagement and divestment, and non-violent direct action for the climate.
Our network currently has over 600 members, including faith-based organisations and individual faith leaders and activists working on climate change, on a voluntary or professional basis.
Membership of the network is open to any faith-based organisation, and people of every faith, working on climate change.
## **Public benefit**
The Trustees have paid due regard to the Charity Commission guidance on public benefit, and keep it in mind in all developments, to ensure that all our activities are delivering benefit to the public, as defined there.

## **ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE Charitable activities**
## **Our activities and events**
FFTC organised regular workshops and events for activists from a range of communities and organisations on specific subjects. During 2023 these included:
- Feb 2023 Promotion of The Climate Coalition's Show the Love campaign in February, focusing on outreach to faith groups (online).
- Feb 2023 Online film screening of the environmental justice documentary The Ants and the Grasshopper for FFTC network members, followed by a series of multifaith workshops.
- April 2023 Faith Groups' Mobilisation - The Big One - led by Christian Climate Action, supported by Faith for the Climate.
- April 2023 Interfaith Advocacy - letter to Lloyds of London asking it to end support for the East Africa Crude Oil Pipeline (led by Quakers in Britain)
- June 2023 Interfaith Picnic for the Great Big Green Week (in collaboration with the Brahma Kumaris UK and St John's church, Waterloo)
Service for Interfaith Picnic, 2023
- June 2023 Make Polluters Pay interfaith action, Lower Marsh, Waterloo, jointly with Islamic Relief and Christian Aid
- Sept 2023 Lloyds of London action - a follow-up to our April letter and part of the global #EndFossilFuels action; we also participated in an action by CAFOD that engaged with Shell and BP.
- October/November 2023 Exploring Spirit collaboration -
o Loving Earth exhibition (in collaboration with Quakers in Britain),
o Climate justice film screenings, panel discussions, and performances for Black History Month and Interfaith Week (in collaboration with Complicité, Tipping Point North South, South Asians for Sustainability, and Christian Climate Action)

## **Faith Leadership meetings**
In 2023 FFTC continued chairing a series of meetings with prominent people in leadership or spokesperson roles in faith communities. The aims of these meetings are:
(a) providing resources and information to support faith leaders and representatives in their work and advocacy
(b) coordinating media and comms presence to increase opportunities
(c) identifying key areas nationally and alongside our international partners where faith leaders can work together to amplify issues of injustice caused or worsened by climate change, and
(d) developing and nurturing new voices who can speak with authority within and beyond their faith traditions.
## **Our resources**
A key aspect of our work through has been the development of resources to assist smaller faith communities to develop their capacity to support climate concern and action in their communities.

Our website was updated in 2023 and provides access to the great range of resources which have been developed by the faith and non-faith communities.
We provide a regular online newsletter and we have an active social media presence.
For COP26 and COP27, we also hosted a special website, Make COP Count (now wound down), that contained numerous faith-specific climate justice resources, including downloadable and free-of-charge interfaith guides, briefings, flyers and videos for communities in the UK.
Exploring Spirit, October 2023 - Can I live? Documentary on Fehinti Balogun's journey into climate activism.
## **Overall evaluation for 2023:**
- We built several key new relationships and collaborations, especially with UK minority ethnic and minority faith groups (see below)
- We successfully designed and launched our new peer-educators project on faith-inspired approaches to climate justice
- We have sustained our network of faith leaders and representatives with several opportunities for collaborations
- We continue to have high trust amongst our network, NGO partners, faith communities, academic researchers, and government agencies (including local and metropolitan authorities)

Interfaith moment during Interfaith Week, November 2023, calling for rich nations to give their fair share of money to the communities disproportionately experiencing the impacts of climate change.
## **FINANCIAL REVIEW**
## **Financial position**
The results for the year and financial position of the Charity are shown in the annexed financial statements.
The net surplus for the year amounted to £5,029 (2022; £36,371). A surplus of £3,059 (2022: £29,371) is attributed to unrestricted funds and a surplus of £1,970 (2022: £7,000) is attributed to restricted funds.
At 31 December 2023 the balance on unrestricted funds amounted to £32,430 (2022: £29,371) and the balance on restricted funds amounted to £8,970 (2022: £7,000).
## **Principal funding sources**
During the year the Charity was awarded funding of £47,000 (2022: £30,000) from the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust. This funding is to fund a new project to develop a network of Peer Educators across England.
During the year the Charity was awarded funding of £10,000 (2022: £10,000) from the Polden Puckham Charitable Foundation. This funding is to build faith based climate action using COP26 as the catalyst for transformation and advocacy in faith communities.

## **FINANCIAL REVIEW**
## **Reserves policy**
The trustees consider that a sum equivalent to a quarter of a years operating expenditure is a sufficient sum of money to have readily available in reserve. Based on this financial year the charity's minimum requirement for reserves would have been £13,250 (2022 £12,482). Actual free reserves were £32,430 (2022 £29,371)
## **FUTURE PLANS)**
## **Our strategic direction for 2022-25**
We focus on building an interfaith, grassroots movement in the UK that understands climate justice at local, national and global levels, and takes a variety of actions based on this understanding.
SMART objectives for 2022-25
1. Our grassroots movement-building will develop resources to equip and encourage local and national faith-inspired networks to take more climate justice actions.
2. Through effective messaging, and organising and/or supporting high-profile interfaith events, we will create political impact by pressuring the UK government to implement more ambitious and just climate policies.
3. We will raise our public profile by building new strategic partnerships with other secular and faith-based networks and media channels, and strengthening existing ones, for joint actions.
4. We will implement long-term governance and management strategies and policies in compliance with charity best practice.

## **STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT Governing document**
The charity is controlled by its governing document, a deed of trust and constitutes a Charitable Incorporated Organisation.
## **Our Trustees**
The Trustees are: The Revd Giles Goddard (Chair), Rabbi Debbie Young-Somers, Mr James Cresswell, Mrs Trupti Patel, Professor Jagbir Jhutti-Johal, Dr Husna Ahmad, Chief Imam Sayed Razawi, The Revd Guy Wilkinson.
Trustees are drawn from a range of significant faith communities present in the United Kingdom which are committed by their beliefs to the care of the planet and regard the present crisis of climate and environment as the most serious concern confronting the world.
Trustees met five times in 2023 to review the strategic direction of the charity, to monitor its financial health and to ensure compliance. Of these meetings, three were online and two in person.

## **Independent examiner's report to the trustees of Faith for the Climate**
I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of Faith for the Climate (the Trust) for the year ended 31 December 2023.
## **Responsibilities and basis of report**
As the charity trustees of the Trust you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 ('the Act').
I report in respect of my examination of the Trust's accounts carried out under Section 145 of the Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under Section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
## **Independent examiner's statement**
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:
1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the Trust as required by Section 130 of the Act; or
2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or
3. the accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a true and fair view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

## **1. ACCOUNTING POLICIES**
## **Basis of preparing the financial statements**
The financial statements of the charity, which is a public benefit entity under FRS 102, have been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) 'Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019)', Financial Reporting Standard 102 'The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland' and the Charities Act 2011. The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention.
## **Income**
All income is recognised in the Statement of Financial Activities once the charity has entitlement to the funds, it is probable that the income will be received and the amount can be measured reliably.
## **Expenditure**
Liabilities are recognised as expenditure as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to that expenditure, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably. Expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under headings that aggregate all cost related to the category. Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings they have been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources.
## **Tangible fixed assets**
Depreciation is provided at the following annual rates in order to write off each asset over its estimated useful life.
Computer equipment - 20% on cost
## **Taxation**
The charity is exempt from tax on its charitable activities.
## **Fund accounting**
Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees.
Restricted funds can only be used for particular restricted purposes within the objects of the charity. Restrictions arise when specified by the donor or when funds are raised for particular restricted purposes.
Further explanation of the nature and purpose of each fund is included in the notes to the financial statements.
## **Pension costs and other post-retirement benefits**
The charity operates a defined contribution pension scheme. Contributions payable to the charity's pension scheme are charged to the Statement of Financial Activities in the period to which they relate.
