## Report of the Trustees for the Year Ended 31 December 2022
The trustees present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31 December 2022. The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019).
## **OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES**
## **Objectives and activities**
The objects, for which the charity is established as stated in its governing document, are:
1. To promote sustainable development for the benefit of the public by:
a) The preservation, conservation and the protection of the environment and the prudent use of resources and encouraging people of faith, particularly in leadership roles to take effective action to tackle climate change and conserve natural resources.
b) The relief of poverty and the improvement of the conditions of life in socially and economically disadvantages communities.
c) The promotion of sustainable means of achieving economic growth and regeneration.
2. To advance the education of the public in subjects relating to sustainable development and the protection, enhancement and rehabilitation of the environment and to promote study and research in such subjects provided that the useful results of such study are disseminated to the public at large. Sustainable development means development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
## **Ethos**
Faith for the Climate exists to encourage, inspire and equip faith communities in their work on the crisis of climate change. Faith communities have a unique and precious role to play.
The Faith for the Climate charity provides means by which people of faith working on climate issues come together to learn from one another and to encourage and support one another in our faith-based work on the climate crisis. We know that faith communities, by coming together, have a powerful witness, voice and role to play in the wider climate movement.
Faith for the Climate was founded as a network in 2014 and became a registered charity (Reg No 1194434) in May 2021. It's offices are at St John's, Waterloo Road, London SE1 8TY although its trustees are located across the United Kingdom in Scotland, Birmingham, London and Hereford. ## **OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES**
## **Our Partnerships**
Faith for the Climate is committed to work collaboratively with other organisations which share our mission. FFTC:
- is an active member of the Climate Coalition, which is the largest organisation dedicated to action against climate change in the United Kingdom.
- is the UK national partner-founder of the international climate justice organisation, Greenfaith
- co-chairs an informal advocacy based network of UK faith groups that work on climate justice globally; this is a legacy of the informal coalition of climate justice organisations, Make COP Count for which we provided secretariat support during and after COP26 ans 27.
- is the only faith member of the working group of the Climate Justice Coalition (formerly the COP26 Coalition)
- has applied for membership of the Inter Faith Network UK.
Our interfaith exhibition at the Green Zone, COP26 (with permission to share)
We support people of every faith and every kind of faith-based action for the climate, including advocacy and prayer, lifestyle change and meditation, shareholder engagement and divestment, and non-violent direct action for the climate.
Our network currently has over 550 members, including faith-based organisations and individual faith leaders and activists working on climate change, on a voluntary or professional basis.
Membership of the network is open to any faith-based organisation, and people of every faith, working on climate change.
## **Public benefit**
The Trustees have paid due regard to the Charity Commission guidance on public benefit, and keep it in mind in all developments, to ensure that all our activities are delivering benefit to the public, as defined there.

## **ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE Charitable activities**
## **Our activities and events**
FFtC organises regular workshops for activists from a range of communities and organisations on specific subjects. Most recently these have included:
- February 2022 on advocacy principles
- April 2022 on decarbonising our homes and places of worship
- June 2022 on Women, the environment and sustainability
- December 2022, together with Christian Aid, on the outcomes of COP27 and its implications for UK faith-inspired activists
- Our trustees and staff members are actively involved in a wide variety of conferences, seminars and media
appearance:
(a) In 2022 with the Brahma Kumari community
(b) July 2022: Building trust and respect with planet and community
(c) September 2022: Facing the challenges of a rapidly changing world
(d) October 2022 inter faith film screening and panel event at Goldsmith College to commemorate Black History Month and Faith4Climate Justice

## **Loss and Damage**
In September 2022 a workshop on Loss and Damage Action Day was held which led to an inter faith walk of witness on 22nd September in collaboration with secular groups such as Global Justice Now and OXFAM.

In 2022 FFtC commenced a series of Faith Leadership meetings with prominent people in leadership roles in faith communities. The aims of these meetings are:
(a) provide resources and information to support faith leaders in their work and advocacy
(b) coordinating media and comms presence to increase opportunities
(c) identifying key areas nationally and alongside our international partners where faith leaders can work together to amplify issues of climate justice and
(d) developing and nurturing new voices who can speak with authority within and beyond their faith traditions.
## **Our resources**
A key aspect of our work through 2020/ 2021/2022 has been the development of resources to assist smaller faith communities to develop their capacity to support climate concern and action in their communities. To this end we worked with four respected organisations: The Bahu Trust, Eco Dharma Network, EcoSikh and Hindu Climate Action, to produce events and resources.
For 2022, we shared the Climate Coalition's new Community Action Pack to equip organisations for their activities.
Our website was updated in 2022 and provides access to the great range of resources which have been developed by the faith and non-faith communities.
We provide a regular online newsletter and we have an active social media presence.
For COP26 and COP27, we also hosted a special website, Make COP Count, that contained numerous faith-specific climate justice resources, including downloadable and free-of-charge interfaith guides, briefings, flyers and videos for communities in the UK.

## **FINANCIAL REVIEW**
## **Financial position**
The results for the year and financial position of the Charity are shown in the annexed financial statements.
The net surplus for the year amounted to £36,371 (2021; £nil). A surplus of £29,371 (2021: £nil) is attributed to unrestricted funds and a surplus of £7,000 (2021 £nil) is attributed to restricted funds.
At 31 December 2022 the balance on unrestricted funds amounted to £29,371 (2021: £nil) and the balance on restricted funds amounted to £7,000 (2021: £nil).
## **Principal funding sources**
During the year the Charity was awarded funding of £30,000 (2021: £nil) from the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust. This funding is to fund a new project to develop a network of Peer Educators across England.
During the year the Charity was awarded funding of £10,000 (2021: £nil) from the Polden Puckham Charitable Foundation. This funding is to build faith based climate action using COP26 as the catalyst for transformation and advocacy in faith communities.
## **Reserves policy**
The trustees consider that a sum equivalent to a quarter of a years operating expenditure is a sufficient sum of money to have readily available in reserve. Based on this financial year the charity's minimum requirement for reserves would have been £4,045. Actual free reserves were £29,371.
## **FUTURE PLANS**
## **Our strategic direction for 2022-25**
We will focus on building an interfaith, grassroots movement in the UK that understands climate justice at local, national and global levels, and takes a variety of actions based on this understanding.
## **SMART objectives for 2022-25**
1. Our grassroots movement-building will develop resources to equip and encourage local and national faith-inspired networks to take more climate justice actions.
2. Through effective messaging, and organising and/or supporting high-profile interfaith events, we will create political impact by pressuring the UK government to implement more ambitious and just climate policies.
3. We will raise our public profile by building new strategic partnerships with other secular and faith-based networks and media channels, and strengthening existing ones, for joint actions.
4. We will implement long-term governance and management strategies and policies in compliance with charity best practice.

## **STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT**
## **Governing document**
The charity is controlled by its governing document, a deed of trust and constitutes a Charitable Incorporated Organisation.
## **Our Trustees**
The need for new trustees is reviewed regularly, and where appropriate possible names are presented at a trustee meeting for consideration. The existing trustees make new appointments, for an indefinite period. Trustees are drawn from a range of significant faith communities present in the United Kingdom which are committed by their beliefs to the care of the planet and regard the present crisis of climate and environment as the most serious concern confronting the world. New trustees are given an information pack about the charity and a full induction process is arranged.
Trustees met six times in 2022 to review the strategic direction of the charity, to monitor its financial health and to ensure compliance. Of these meetings five were online and one in person. From 2023 trustees will meet alternately online and in person.

## **Independent examiner's report to the trustees of Faith for the Climate**
I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of Faith for the Climate (the Trust) for the year ended 31 December 2022.
## **Responsibilities and basis of report**
As the charity trustees of the Trust you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 ('the Act').
I report in respect of my examination of the Trust's accounts carried out under Section 145 of the Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under Section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
## **Independent examiner's statement**
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:
1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the Trust as required by Section 130 of the Act; or
2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or
3. the accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a true and fair view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

## **1. ACCOUNTING POLICIES**
## **Basis of preparing the financial statements**
The financial statements of the charity, which is a public benefit entity under FRS 102, have been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) 'Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019)', Financial Reporting Standard 102 'The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland' and the Charities Act 2011. The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention.
## **Income**
All income is recognised in the Statement of Financial Activities once the charity has entitlement to the funds, it is probable that the income will be received and the amount can be measured reliably.
## **Expenditure**
Liabilities are recognised as expenditure as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to that expenditure, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably. Expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under headings that aggregate all cost related to the category. Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings they have been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources.
## **Taxation**
The charity is exempt from tax on its charitable activities.
## **Fund accounting**
Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees.
Restricted funds can only be used for particular restricted purposes within the objects of the charity. Restrictions arise when specified by the donor or when funds are raised for particular restricted purposes.
Further explanation of the nature and purpose of each fund is included in the notes to the financial statements.
## **Pension costs and other post-retirement benefits**
The charity operates a defined contribution pension scheme. Contributions payable to the charity's pension scheme are charged to the Statement of Financial Activities in the period to which they relate.
