Since its founding irL 1985. tbe OPA has been dedicated to assistitig Patients, caregivers alld families by providing free

cancel deaths in the UL that is 22 every day (2017-2019 CRUK), this Jneans tbat one pergon v/ill die every hour fro]n
this type of cancer. There are around 9,400 new cases of oegophageal caDcer annually (about 26 per day).
Gastrittlstoll￿h cancer is the 16th most common cauge of cancer death in the UL there are around 3,600 deaths from
stomach carlcer in tbe UK each year, approximately 10 deaths per day (2017-2019 CRUK). Around 6,600 new stomach
cancer cases annually (2017-2019 average).
Together, Oesophago-gastric cancers affect mole than I 1,000 people each year.

While lifestyle changes and rnedicatioDS such as omeprazole and laDsoprazole provided relief foT ]nany, for over2 n)illion
people in the UL these tre8th]ents were insuffi¢iell( high]iglLting the importance of pmzuoting altell￿tive options and

Alld finally... Celebrating 40 Years of the OPA Cancer Charity.
As part of our 40tb anniversary year, we produced a rallge of coM￿e￿or￿tive items, including a bespoke trolley token
and pin badge. alongside a periwillkle ribbou badge. These items Zllarked this significant milestone. helping to raise
awareness of our work andprovide additional opporiuDitie$ for supporter engagement and fullthai5ing.
We a]so returned to the very hot¢1 wh¢r¢ the OPAbegan, holding the allniver5ary event inthe same suite at the Bwljngton
Macdonald Hotel (fornierly the Midland Hotel) where our fir8t meeting tookpla¢e. The o¢c3siollprovided allopportUDity
to refiect on four decades of supporting patients, ¢areT5 and families affected by oesophageal and g&stric cancers.
The celebration brought together gtaff, clinicians. Upper Gl nurses, active volunteers from across the UK supporters and
beneficÉaries to cornroemordte the charitys adJievements. We were delighted that our Patron, Fiona Wade - who lost her
father to oesOphage￿ c￿er - attended as a special guesL accompanied by rnother, adding persoDal significance to
the occ&sion.
It was parti¢u13Tly megnitigful to weleorne foErner palierLts, CIT￿5 and their faD]ilies, many of who￿were able to share in
the anniversary celebrations.
