The charitable objects of the d)arity were for the public benefit. the advancement ol the performing
arts, in particular, but not exdu51vely. by'_ lal ¢eveloping and p8rforming publicly dance and ballet
perforrnances at the highest levels and making these accessible to audIen￿S not all of whom
be already familiar wth such performing arts,. Ibl the provision of opportunities for the education,
training. instructson and development of dance and b811et performers.
The chariV5 main acbvity is to produce a professiC￿al perf0mlan￿ of The Nutcr8d(er ballet
annually in Brecon.

Even before the performances of The Nutcradler ended in De￿mber 2022, Brecon Festival
Ballet's IBFBI Artssts'c Director, Katy Sinnadurai, started piannirE for 2023.
At the start of the year in February the Trustees 8greed and signed off the budget. The focus lor
the first five rnonths was fundraising, including applying for grants and sponsorship bmth the
objectNe of covering the cost of the next producti(￿.

In Febnjary on reviewng the 2022 production and identifying priorities lor development for 2023,
the decision was taken to establish Brecon Festival Ballet's own orchestra for the Ghiistm8S
production. Followng rèstrarch and meeting potential conductors, Cardiff based Eugene Monteith
was appointed Musical Director to recruit rnusician5 and conduct the new Brecon Festival 8allet
Orchestral to work wth the ballet company at the agreed dress rehears815 and at 5 perforTn8TI￿S
ol the Nutcrad¢er.
In 2023 the incredibly hard-working ¢05tume making team donated cOun￿e$S hours cr8ating
beaullul new costumes for the Wahz of the Flowers.
sn August, a professional d8ncer5' rehearsal week Saw 8 few Nutcracker rehearsals but the main
purpose of th8 W88k was to creste brand new chor80graphy for a Spring 2024 production of a new
ballet to celebrate Welsh culture. entided"Tanio'r Ddraig
In September. 8 series of auditions were undertaken for ￿cru￿ng the community & professional
casts for the Nutcracker production. Rehearsals then continued every weekend throughout the
Autumn. Snowfiakes Choir was recruited in Ootober, rehearsals then followed every Sunday
until the perfom)ances in De￿Mber.
October also Saw an intense week of rehearsals wrth the professKJnal dan￿r$ working on
Nutcracker choreography with the Arbstic Director.
AJI the performers then carne together for an intense production leading up to the successful
S perfomiances on De￿mber 15th- 17th.

This year BFB continued its policy of invityng members ol the local community to Sp￿ar onstage
and helpout back5tsge, alongside professional dancers and musician5. Giwng local dance
students the unique opportunity of perfom)Ing alongside the profe5siona15 15 one of BFB'S key aims
as a charity and the children have said how Inspiring the exp8rienc8 was for thern. This provides a
unique learning opportunity to experien￿ high qualily art firstthand and to be part of the huge team
effort ￿quIred to stage a full-scale production.
Brecon High School ￿re inffiied to attend the dress rehearsal as soma of thÈ dancers we
previous students (see note of appreciation In'Audi8nce Cornments, later in this reporti.
It 18 8 truly Welsh NU￿raCker. Of the 160 people involv&J 140 are trorn Wales..
Of the 27 professional dan￿r$, 13 are We15h and 8 trained in Brecon.
The 30 professional tnu51cians are all based in Wale5.
Of the 36 ballet students, 32 are Welsh and 29 train In Breton.
There were 14 singers in tt)e Choir. 17 adult actors and 34 off-stage crew. all from Brecon
and the surrounding area.

Achi8v8ments ond Performance
For Brecon Festival Ballet. our December 2023 performances of The Nutcracker were, in some
way5, a test. firsuy to see if audiences In Brecon would be keen on the concept of this fe5tiv8 balK8t
being repeate(l annually at Christm85185 It is by ballet companies all over the worfdl. secondly to
see whether. following Covid and in the miclst of a cost of liwng crisis, audiences would be
prepared to spend money on tickets lor a night out at the ballet.
The answer was ye5. Totsl ticket sales reached 1,839 for the 5 perfomiances. an In¢￿aSe over thè
previous year of over 100. This is a significant achievement for a town ol approximately 8.000
residents. It Was notable that this year, just over half of ts"ckets sold were bought by audience
members liwng outside the LD3 p05tcode 8rea. meaning that our reputation is spreading and more
people are travelling into Brecon to see this production. This is a re81 boost, not only to 8FB, but to
Theair 8rycheiniog and the local economy of the town. with B￿COn-baSed businesses and
hospitality all benefitting from Nutcracker visitors over the weekend befo￿ Chr15tfflas.
The production received a review written by the Assistant Arbsty'c Director of Maine State Ballet.
