## **Management Committee Reports:**

## **From Nick Broom – Vice Chair:**

A lot of work has been done with training for the Woodwork shop, with 79 individuals receiving the induction training and 68 on multiple specific pieces of equipment. Projects completed include a dog training gate for Petersfield Dog Training Club and 25 Kestrel nesting boxes for Newton Valance Conservation Group. Ongoing projects include 40 Starling nesting boxes for Newton Valence, two large decorative tree structures for Herne Junior School and some shelving for the Scouts next door.

On-site there has been a simple undercover store for 8ft x 4ft wood sheet materials created. The Metalwork shop has been receiving a lot of attention including:

- A new consumer unit installed, tested and certificated.

- New LED strip lighting added.

- An small outside shed to house our air compressor with a controlled compressed air ring main, outlets and tools added.

- A full MIG welding setup purchased, parts cleaner, blast cabinet, 2 bench drills, 2 bench grinders, bench press, arc welders, plasma cutter and a full suite of hand tools being housed ready for opening.

- Our Myford lathe tested and ready for use.

- Our smaller lathe has had some electronics repairs and is now ready for use.

- Sorting of a myriad of donated items, including useful fastenings and many hardware items boxed and labelled, salvageable tools separated for our use or disposal, approximately ½ tonne of scrap metal removed.

- Precious lathe/engineering tooling and measuring equipment separated.

## **Mike Bookham - IT & Electronics group** :

- Our dedicated room is now fully equipped for electronics enthusiasts. Feel free to use it whenever the shed is open. Plus, we’ve recently received a donated 3D printer!

- Join us every Wednesday evening for our group meetup. Around half a dozen members attend each night, making it a great opportunity to:

   - Seek assistance with your IT and electronics projects.

   - Bring along interesting items to spark discussions related to science or electronics.

- Rob Bewes, one of our talented members, recently hosted a captivating home computer evening. The positive feedback from the room full of attendees was heart-warming. More events are planned.

- Petersfield Men’s Shed is now officially on Google Maps! You’ll find accurate location details and opening times.

- Visit our website and follow us on Facebook to stay informed about upcoming events, news, and opportunities.

- If you’d like to join us, simply drop by on Wednesdays from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM or email Mike via the IT address.

Let’s continue building a vibrant community of tech enthusiasts!

## **Michael Cowen - Bike Group:**

Our first-year accomplishments:

- Dismantle a donated a substantial shed and re site at the Men’s Shed to create the bike workshop.

- Equip the workshop with workbench, cupboards and hangers and awning, and install a professional bicycle tool cupboard along with 4 bike stands.

- There is a team of 8 members who regularly attend our Wednesday’s bike workshop day. This is both productive and good fun.

- We have upcycled and have ready for sale or sold approximately 50 bicycles: children’s, teenagers, adults and a tricycle that went to a teenager with disabilities his Christmas present. We have also provided service / repairs to many of our members’ bicycles.

- Thanks to the IT group, who have helped promote us via Facebook, we have a steady flow of customers and donations alike. They are also helping with E-Bike electrical problems.

## **Mark Evans - Pat Testing Group:**

Since the start of the new year a group of members have been training to gain accreditation as PAT Testers. We now have 5 members that are accredited: Mark Evans, Lal Coomasura, Jan Stuart, Julian Stevens, and Tony Baker.

Our plan is to establish an inventory of all equipment at site and a periodic testing routine covering appliances in the workshops, the house and donations for re-sale. We have a dedicated email address PATtesting@petersfieldmensshed.org.uk to enable members to contact us.

A key element of the PAT Testing process is the ‘User Check’. This requires that members conduct a quick visual inspection to check the plug, mains lead and appliance for any signs of damage before use, and when using the appliance check for any signs of over-heating, sparking, burning smells. We ask that members report any concerns stemming from the ‘User Check’ to the session manager and PAT Testing Team via the email address, so a PAT Test can be arranged.

## **Michell Day (Moo) - Garden Group:**

Since proposing a 'kitchen garden' plan, and asking Moo to lead the Garden group, a great deal of progress has been made.

- Two new, large “accesses able” raised beds created.

- Donated greenhouse erected.

- Topsoil purchased and moved by barrow to fill up the four raised beds (thank you to the few members that helped).

- A rock garden has been created.

- At present there are about half a dozen active members using and helping in the garden.

- So far, we have spent:

   - £120 on topsoil,

   - £24.95 on seeds,

   - £137.03 on plants and sundries.

- Everything is planted up and we are witing now to taste the produce!

In a bid to attract more members, photos and updates are being posted on Facebook and new members invited to participate. There is a chalkboard in the greenhouse, together with a copy of the garden plan, so members can attend at any time and know what jobs are available for them to do. As more activity is seen, we hope more members will be enticed to get involved.

Our thoughts for the future:

- There will be an opportunity for the cooking group to use the produce from the kitchen garden, potentially to create chutneys and pickles for sale,

- To improve the storage of garden equipment with a small 6x4 shed on the existing concrete base,

- Create an additional kitchen garden area for soft fruit,

- Potential for decorative planting in the front garden, perhaps in partnership with the Physic Garden.

## **John Liddall - Guitar Group** :

The group started about nine months ago, when Ray Vogt, who is an accomplished guitar player, suggested that we should start a guitar group for all abilities from beginners to proficient players. We now have six active members, three of whom play in the open mic sessions in various locations around the Petersfield area, one average player and two complete beginners.

We hold the beginner’s session on Friday mornings 10.30-11.30 where Ray has taught us the chords and strumming techniques. The jamming session for the more experienced players starts at 11.30. We have now learnt to play about 30 different songs ranging from Lonnie Donegan to The Eagles and various other artist’s in between. We play a range of guitars both electric and acoustic as well as a mandolin.

Our group has played at several of our Pizza evenings where the other members listen to our tunes whether they like it or not (we have a captive audience!). We have a keyboard, and we are looking for someone to play it at our Friday sessions, so if you are interested in learning to play or join in on the jamming sessions, please come along and join in.

## **Steven Watts - Last Word:**

This Annual Report for the AGM will be my last. As you are aware, after 4 years as Chair, since its inception to where we are now, I am stepping down. We have come so far in that time, and I would like to express here, my thanks and appreciation for all the support and efforts of the Trustees, management committee members, and volunteer members who have helped create such amazing facilities and provide excellent activity opportunities at 16 Heath Road. Our Men’s Shed is the envy of many, and every member should feel rightly proud of what has been achieved.

I will continue as an active member and hope to see many more members being active, volunteering and supporting the activities and projects enjoyed by us all.

## **PETERSFIELD MEN’S SHED**

## **Financial Review year ended 31[st] March 2024**

## **Introduction:**

The year ended 31[st] March 2024 was the first full year of ‘normal’ Shed operations since occupation of the Heath Road premises in October 2022. The woodwork shop has been fully operational throughout as has the cycle repair group. Significant amounts of donated tools have been collected, PAT tested and sold to the public. A number of community projects have been taken on which have generated further revenue for the Shed.

## **Grants and Capital Expenditure:**

Only 2 grants were received in the year £4,880 from EHDC and £750 from PTC which have been used to further develop the Shed site facilities, with a balance being carried forward. Capital expenditure amounted to £4,435 comprising a morticer, a planer/thicknesser, a compressor, welding equipment and other equipment for the metalwork shop. Depreciation has been charged on the year- end balance of Fixed Assets at a rate of 25% (reducing balance).

## **Membership:**

Membership renewals in October and new members joining subsequently have maintained the membership at 80 which generated £4,650 with a further £1,500 due from the Gift Aided donations.

## **Shed Products:**

Sales of Shed-made products, renovated cycles, surplus donated tools and community projects generated a total of £5,723. Total materials purchased in the year were £2,599 providing a very healthy surplus for Shed funds.

## **Expenses:**

The largest expense in the year was the continued site development, particularly the metalwork shed at £3,286 largely covered by specific grants. Small tools and equipment totalling £2,216 (under £100) were purchased and written off. No bills for electricity and water have yet been received from EHDC with £1271 reserved, based on meter readings, following the installation of smart meters during the year.

## **Reserves:**

The Shed ended the year with total reserves of £23,725 which includes a bank balance of £14,060, leaving the charity in a very strong position.
