## **Bro Eleth Ministry Area** ## **End of Year Financial Statements & Report** ## **Year ending 2023** _Page 1_ ## **Introduction** ## **Foreword** The accounts have been prepared on the Receipts and Payments basis in accordance with the provisions of the Charities Act 2011 and the Church in Wales Accounting regulations. The accounts presented may be rounded to the nearest pound (£); as a result, there may appear to be arithmetic differences of £1; these differences are ignored because the underlying accounts balance. The accounts cover the period 1[st] January 2023 to 31[st] December 2023. The accounts have been checked for accuracy and approved off by an external examiner. The examiner’s sign of sheet is included at the back of this report. ## **Reserves Policy** Bro Eleth Ministry Area Council (PCC) aims to retain a balance of unrestricted “free” reserves to provide working capital, and to meet any future shortfalls in receipts or unexpected payments, at least equal to three months payments. The unrestricted reserves amount detailed in the Balance Sheet sections of this report is in line with this policy. ## **Introduction** I wish to thank the church treasurers for their time and effort in keeping the day-to-day accounts at their individual churches in good order. I would also like to thank the Ministry Area Leader, Ministry Area Wardens and Churchwardens for their efforts in local fund raising and for continuing to control church expenditure. ## **Income/Expenditure** ## **Income** - Total income for 2023 was £47k compared to £42k in 2022 showing an improvement year to year of £5k, - Overall giving (collections, gift aid, donations, and other offerings) was up £9k, - Income from charitable activities which includes funeral services, weddings and burials showed a decrease of approximately £6k, - Other trading activities which include fund raising was up on last year by £1.1k from £2.5k in 2022 to £3.6k, due mainly to a Christmas Fair held at St Eleth’s Church in Amlwch. It should be noted of the continuing sterling efforts by St Gwenllwyfo, St Eilian and St Michaels, Penrhoslligwy in raising funds for their church projects. It is important that all churches perform this function, - Returns on investments increased by approximately £500 due to benefitting from higher rates of interest and dividend payments throughout the year. _Page 2_ ## **Expenditure** - Overall expenditure in 2023 was £80k compared to 2022 at £79k, a small increase of £1k. It should be noted that due to a temporary cash flow problem at St Eleth’s, Amlwch the final quarter’s payment of £2.7k was not paid in 2023. This was paid in January 2024 when the situation was rectified. - Diocesan Share (BMF) shows a reduction from the previous year of £7k. This difference is due mainly to the phasing of payments over the two years. - The gain from the Diocesan Share (BMF) and other cost savings was offset by the following main increases in costs :- - Our Ministry Area Leader has now been with us for a full year. As a result, the costs of the necessary ministerial expenses and parsonage costs have increased by £1.1k. - Church operating costs that includes insurance, utilities, cleaning and fire equipment increased by £2.4k year on year. This is due to general inflationary rises, extra insurance coverage for the closed churches and significant price rises on electricity and gas. - Churchyard maintenance showed a decrease of £1.8k. Emergency tree care at St Mair, Llannerchymedd was required although the full cost of this was offset by a GoFundMe appeal and a contribution from St Gwenllwyfo, - Expenditure on property repairs increased by £5k due mainly to the completion of the floor restoration project at St Michaels, Penrhosligwy and further structural improvements at the house in Llanerchymedd. ## **Gain/(Loss)** - Bro Eleth made a loss during 2023 of £33k compared to the previous year of £37k. As previously mentioned, a 2023 expense of £2.7k was not paid until 2024 so we are managing to keep our Income and Expenditure statement stable. The significant reasons for this are as follows: - - The loss of £33k as described in the Income/Expenditure section of this report. All funds were affected by this loss, - The value of investments taken as a snapshot as at 31[st] December 2023 show a significant increase from that taken as at 31[st] December 2022. Unrestricted and Restricted funds have both been affected by this upturn. However, we realise these are book values based on financial market forces. Some churches embraced this analysis and changed contracts with their utility providers to reduce their costs, - Members of the Ministry Area Council (MAC) and Church Treasurers need to find potential synergies and follow them through in order to further reduce costs, - Although interest rates have improved since the end of the last financial year, we must discover better ways of improving our return on investments, - Fund raising is key and ways must be found of raising significant funds to mitigate our drain on unrestricted funds due to continuing losses, - The rental property in Llanerchymedd is now empty and will go to auction during 2024. Expenditure on Council Tax is anticipated up to the point of sale but once that has taken place it will be a welcome injection of liquid funds into the designated fund category.
