MEDIEVAL COMBAT SPORTS ASSOCIATION GREAT BRITAIN

(formally – Historical Medieval Battle – Great Britain)

Charity number: 1194258

Trustees’ Report and Financial Statement

For year ending 5 April 2022

Trustees

Christopher Lamsdell Lewis Thompson Karen Cunningham Gavin James Grant Stewart Jake Coles

Charity number (CIO – Association)

1194258

Principle address

Unit 14, Hanson Close Industrial Estate, Hanson Close, Middleton, Manchester M24 2HD

Objectives

The advancement of the amateur sport of Medieval combat for the public benefit by the promotion and provision of facilities for public participation so as to improve the physical health of participants.

Structure

The charities’ structure is set out in its CIO Association constitution and within the association’s rules. The rules regarding the structure of the management committee and appointment of trustees are set out in these documents.

Summary of activities

The Trustees held their AGM on the 6 November 2021.

The management committee held their AGM on 15 January 2022. Subsequently the management committee held an EGM on 7 March 2022 regarding the attendance of the President at the next HMBIA meeting. Subsequent to these events, though outside this reporting period, an EGM was held on the 15 June were the management committee resolved to change the name of the charity (organisation) from Historical Medieval Battle – Great Britain to Medieval Combat Sports Association – Great Britain. This was to reflect the sport as participated within different disciplines, not solely those through HMB rule sets for competitions, and that in addition the name change reflected more clearly the sports-based aspect of the organisation, to avoid any confusion with re-enactment or any historical clubs.

This recommended name change for the CIO was approved by the Trustees through an EGM and was subsequently formally submitted and approved by the Charity Commission.

During the reporting period a further two clubs applied and were approved to membership of the association, these being in June 2021 Three Towers of Scotland and in August 2021 Birmingham Medieval Combat. Subsequently, post this reporting period a further three clubs have joined, for which full details will appear in the next annual reporting period.

The association obtained appropriate events insurance on behalf of the members clubs that will cover them for any sport event competition they organise, in accordance with association policy requirements. The income for the year amounted to £3528.16, of which £2613.58 was from membership fees, and after the insurance fee of £1570.12, with some other minor expenses, an end of year surplus was £1,808.73, which are held to be utilised for the benefit of the association members. The association will during the next financial year apply for Gift Aid, and if approved will claim for this on this reporting period’s paid membership fees retrospectively. The association is looking for additional areas from which income can be generated in an effort to support current and future members.

The association, at this time, is working towards development of an appropriate youth engagement policy for implementation of youth involvement in the sport via the formation of the sport’s soft kit youth training programme, setting an appropriate trainer approval system and policy regarding the appropriate safeguarding measures for children and the vulnerable.

Unfortunately, the events in Ukraine had quite a serious effect on the international area of the sport. The HMBIA organised Battle of the Nations in Romania in June 2022 was cancelled, as was the international event organised by IMFC. Buhurt League temporarily ceased to operate but has now been reconstituted and a number of events took place in the UK during 2022.

Declarations:

The trustees declare that they have approved the trustees’ report above.

TREASURERS REPORT 2021/2022

YEAR IN SUMMARY

The first financial year for Historical Medieval Battle – Great Britain has been a good one, although not without its challenges.

Unfortunately, the situation with COVID has influenced the charities’ ability to review and support events which were limited due to national restrictions within the year. We are hoping that within the 2022/2023 year we will see more tournaments and more opportunities for fund raising and support of our member clubs.

Within the financial year we managed to institute for the first time a dedicated NGB umbrella insurance policy to the benefit of our member clubs. This was a big step forward for the charity to further offer our support to our member clubs.

I am pleased to report the charities income exceeded the outgoings by £1,808.73 at the end of the first financial year meaning that the charity is in a healthy financial position. The charity has no current fixed assets or outstanding liabilities.

The management team and trustees will continue to be vigilant with review of charity position and activities to ensure minimal follow-on impact from the lifting of COVID restrictions and strong growth and support in the next financial year.
