1.0 Introduction

The trustees present their annual report for the year ending 31[st] December 2021. The financial statements have been prepared on the “Receipts and Payments” basis as defined by the Charity Commission to apply to a charity of our size.

While Sing Healthy was only registered as a charity on the 24[th] April 2021 this report will cover the year January to December 2021.

2.0 Reference and administrative details

Charity name: Sing Healthy Choirs Charity registration number: 1194226

Trustees

Sing Healthy was run by an initial set of trustees to manage the process of becoming a charity which was achieved on the 24[th] April 2021. The first AGM was held on the 25[th] May 2021 when there were a number of changes to the trustee structure.

Ann Shaw Chair (from 25 May 2021, previously the treasurer) Chris Edwards Chair (Until 25 May 2021) Lynn Marshall Secretary Michael Gale Treasurer (from 25 May 2021, previously a trustee) Paul Dunn Trustee (from 25 May 2021) Ann Stainton Trustee Barry Utting Trustee (Until 25 May 2021) Nicola Nicholson Trustee (from 13 July 2021

3.0 Structure, governance and management

Sing Healthy Choirs is governed by its Constitution document of the 26[th] April 2021. The Constitution defines the objectives of the charity and the associated controls and governance around it.

4.0 Objectives and activities

Sing Healthy has two objectives for the benefit of the public:-

  1. To promote, improve, develop and maintain public education in, and appreciation of, the art and science of music in all its aspects by any means the CIO trustees see fit including through the presentation of public concerts and recitals

  2. Such charitable purposes for the public benefit as are exclusively charitable according to the laws of England and Wales as the trustees may from time to time determine

The charity seeks to fulfil both its objectives from the running of choirs that benefit both the choir members in their enjoyment of music and also the general public who benefit from the choir performances.

Charitable donations are made to, primarily, local charities when the funding position of the charity permits.

The trustees have complied with the duty in section 4 of the Charities Act 2006 to have due regard to the public benefit guidance published by the Charity Commission.

“Please send our thanks to everyone that recently took part in one of the "singing around the Christmas trees" which you kindly put together a super choir for all to hear. It is lovely that at a time where it has been difficult to give performances that by coming along and singing outdoors not only did it give you the opportunity to perform for others, but you also gave great enjoyment to those that heard you. The feedback I have received has been so positive and well received and we could not have achieved this without your help and support.”

RBH Charities Brants Bridge

"We had a lovely visit this week from Sing Healthy Choirs who raised over £1,200 for our Christmas Appeal! We couldn't do what we do without the support of the local community"

The Cowshed

"CLASP once again enjoyed a great choir session today, hosted by David from Sing Healthy Choirs. We always have such a good time, singing and dancing."

CLASP

5.0 Achievements and performance

5.1 General situation

The transition to becoming a charity this year was an important step for Sing Healthy and confirmed its roots that were strongly based on a charitable ethos by its founder. Sing Healthy has continued to operate two choirs, one more oriented towards choral music and the other to more contemporary music. We have found this to be a good mix with the members typically preferring one or the other and some do attend both.

As with many organisations, the charity’s activities during the year have been dominated by the Covid outbreak. However the charity has managed to sustain the majority of its members through the adoption of on line rehearsals while in lockdown. As the situation improved we were able to rehearse outside in a covered area provided by a local secondary school and in September we were able to return to our regular indoor rehearsals. All

through these phases we actively complied with the appropriate distancing and hygiene requirements that prevailed and the trustees are highly appreciative of those establishing the safe environments including all the choir members.

Our two Music Directors sustained the choir throughout the year with a wide range of music and engaging rehearsals. The trustees are similarly indebted to the Directors for their talent, musicality and willingness to try many new approaches for the enjoyment of the members. The loss of indoor rehearsals for much of the year did impact our membership numbers but we have seen a progressive recovery as the constraints have been lifted and we have been delighted to welcome a number of new members.

5.2 Performances

We have been able to make a number of public performances this year as the Covid constraints have been progressively lifted.

A summer concert/picnic was held in July for the choir members, family and friends. This was our first physical public performance since the Christmas Concert in December 2019. In July we also performed to the general public at the Windsor Bandstand.

The Christmas concert has always been a major Sing Healthy public event and we were delighted to be able to achieve that this year with both choirs coming together for a highly successful and enjoyable evening.

Christmas time also saw the members doing multiple fund raising and publicity “sing outs” of popular carols at Wisley RHS Gardens, NHS Brant’s Bridge, and Wokingham and Bracknell town centres.

5.3 Charitable giving

The charity has been very pleased to make two charitable donations this year. The first was to CLASP, a self-advocacy group for people with learning disabilities in the Wokingham borough, and comprised the purchase of a printer and a Bluetooth loudspeaker. The latter was to assist CLASP in their choir rehearsals/performances. Sing Healthy and CLASP have a long standing relationship with choir members from Sing Healthy supporting the singing of the CLASP group. That included singing together at Christmas in Wokingham town centre.

The second was to The Cowshed Christmas Present Project. The Cowshed is a crisis charity that provides clothing and other items for individuals and families in Berkshire experiencing hardship and the Christmas Present Project was focussed on ensuring that the children of supported families received a Christmas present. The donation to The Cowshed was funded from the profits of the Christmas Concert.

6.0 Financial review

Despite the operational challenges of the year the financial position of the charity has improved such that its cash reserves are now back to close to the desired level of 50% of the annual subscription income. This level of reserve gives us the confidence that we can withstand any unexpected loss of income and more importantly allows us to commit to public performances where the income maybe uncertain.

The cash reserve for over the year increased by £4045 to a total of £12,465.

The increase in reserve has been achieved primarily through the following means:

a) tighter control of expenditure and the cancellation of some marginal benefit services

b) tighter control over expenses aided by the lower cost of “Zoom” based rehearsals

c) a temporary reduction in rehearsal fees to our Music Directors

d) the claiming of Gift Aid on eligible income

The following table shows the financial summary and is presented in the Receipts and Payments format.

6.1 2021 Commentary

Comments are made on an exception basis

6.1.1 Income

The bulk of the charity’s income is sourced from member subscriptions. Where members have registered for Gift Aid then claims are made on their subscriptions.

The Christmas Concert covered all costs and the profit used to fund the donation to The Cowshed.

The Summer Picnic and public “singout” sessions provided a small income from donations. Clothing sales of Sing Healthy branded shirts/fleeces/scarfs etc are sold at cost from previously bought stock or from the top up order.

6.1.2 Expenditure

Our two Music Directors (and associated car mileage costs) represent the major area of spend and this cost was contained by the reduction in rehearsal fees for most of the year.

The refund for the concert was associated with a concert that was cancelled in March 2020 owing to Covid restrictions where tickets had already been sold. Ticket purchasers were offered a refund and a number took up this option. There is no further liability associated with the cancelled concert.

6.2 Commentary on major movements between 2020 and 2021

6.2.1 Income

No Christmas concert took place in 2020.

The £3440 in 2020 of event income is largely made up of the ticket sales for the concert that was cancelled. The majority of the ticket purchasers donated their payments. The £2992 of “other income” in 2020 was for income from a company where we provided a choir leading role as part of their wellbeing programme. This ceased in 2020.

6.2.2 Expenditure

The change in representation of Music Director 1 fees and travel are as a result of a different payment approach given that Zoom based rehearsals did not require travel. The 2020 Christmas concert donation of £1255 and £724 of costs were for the concert staged in 2019. The donation and invoice payment was not made until 2020. The “other expenditure” in 2020 was for the costs associated with running the company choir and for a rehearsal files subscription service that has been ceased.

7.0 Plans for future periods

Sing Healthy has been through a period of change and stabilisation as it has transitioned into a new governance structure while at the same time having to grapple with the impacts of Covid. Our future plans are largely based on consolidating the current position and growing the existing choirs for the benefit of the members and the audiences. However we will be looking at the opportunities for any other expansion that would be in keeping with our charitable objectives.
