March **2012** **TAR** 2 Paddle Peak organise regular river cleans in the Derwent Valley. Paddle Peak organise come and try paddlesports events for local young people within the Derwent Valley. Giving them the chance to try kayaking. Run regular kayaking sessions for local young people. All volunteers are experienced river paddlers. They provide their own equipment and pay their own expenses. Our coaches again are all volunteers. March **2012** **TAR** 3 Section D Achievements and performance Paddle Peak Annual Report 2023 **Summary of the main achievements of the charity** Winter Pool sessions at Moorways **during the year** Over the Winter period Jan-March we were fortunate to be invited to join Midland Canoe Club in the pool at Moorways Leisure Centre in Derby. This allowed some of our chasers to improve their boat confidence even further and work towards rolling their kayaks - a brilliant step forwards for all, thanks Midland CC and John C for enabling. Our new Sprogs group started in April on the canal with 10 paddlers from the Cromford and Matlock Bath area. This dropped to 8, but they have all continued through the year, and the winter, to be comfortable and get little paddlers. They’ve made great progress over the year and hopefully they’ll soon be moving onto the river! Matlock Scout session on the canal We were contacted by Holloway Scout group asking if we could offer a one-off session for them on the canal, along the lines of the August BH sessions. We set up a session for them on a Wednesday evening in May and ran a couple of sessions back-to-back to facilitate the whole group who had a brilliant time. Paddle Peak Sprogs awards The new intake of ’Sprogs’ have soaked up the knowledge their coaches have been instilling in them extremely well and have progressed through the first two levels of the Paddle Peak Awards, presented with cake and medals in recognition of their achievements. Divisional promotions, race results for Chasers We’ve had further success with the Chasers group - some excellent race results in the national slalom calendar. Bodie got himself an early season win at Oughtibridge and promotion to Div3, Eli got a 3rd place in his first ever event at Stone, and a win at Oughtibridge saw him promoted to Div3. Alfie had a great weekend racing at Llandysul in the summer and got a 12th overall, second J10 on Saturday and 8th on Sunday. Eadie had a string of top 3 places in Div 3 throughout the season, culminating in a promotion into Division 2 at Oughtibridge in September. Volunteers Pete, Andrew and Paul even managed to pull on race bibs and perform admirable in various categories throughout the season. WWSR course - thanks to Pete, PeakPS, and Plas Y Brenin for arranging a Whitewater, Safety and Rescue course for Pete, Andrew and Pedro to gain a vital safety qualification and steps toward enabling more adventures on the water. A tough couple of days learning and swimming around in whitewater but learning and re-capping on essential knowledge. Bakewell Pool sessions - Throughout the winter of 2023-24 we managed to get all the Paddle Peaksters into pool session in Bakewell Pool in increase all their water confidence. Great progress made by all, from some initially not being happy falling in to then being totally at ease hanging upside down in their kayak and making the first steps to rolling, and all the chasers group nailing their rolls by the end of the winter - brilliant! Funding received from The Alpkit Foundation and Derbyshire Dales District Council helped to get these sessions booked in and run at no cost to the kids and families involved. Amazing. Cromford Adventure Weekend - Our annual ‘come and try’ sessions hosted by March **2012** **TAR** 4 Section D Achievements and performance the ever-great Cromford Mills as part of their Adventure Weekend broke records again, 300+ local kids took to the water and got a taste of kayaking, all free of charge. The weekend, as ever, was boosted by the appearance of GB Olympic Slalom Athletes Adam Burgess and Kimberly Woods who coached Peaksters and then took part in slalom races on the canal. Sundays Demonstration was the new Olympic discipline of Kayak Cross. This ran as headto-head racing between the Paddle Peak kids, and a category for the volunteers. Monday we were joined by GB Freestyle paddlers, World Champ James Bebbington and up and coming Sam Booth threw down some crazy manoeuvres for the crowds. But … let’s not forget the 300+ kids that got to see all that and try it out. We say it every year, but I don’t know how it can get better. ## Ladybower access now official More good news in November - paddlesport finally became welcome to Ladybower reservoir. Never before seen, but thanks to a great deal of work from so many parties (of which Paddle peak is one), paddlers can now book in and cruise around the mighty Ladybower reservoir, a place with so much history along with magnificent scenery! Also, in time for the clocks change and winter sessions on the canal, we purchased a set of rechargeable LED floodlights to really make the most of sessions year-round. Now we can take the kids out for sessions at any time of year with the lights ensuring safety and comfort. ## Black Bag Friday. The final big clean of the year for us, Black Friday is always tweaked to become Black Bag Friday and is our last big clean before the winter floods arrive. Yet again we had a great turn out of fifteen hardy volunteers braving the cold, but sunny, day. A ‘successful’ day saw us clear almost a ton of waste, most of which was once again hay bale wrap from the carnage of Storm Babet a few weeks earlier. Bin bags are donated by our local council. Canal access and boat storage is granted by Derbyshire County Council Countryside Service. Changing facilities are provided by Cromford Mills. Equipment is on loan from paddlesports equipment manufacturers. All is supplied free of charge. - how expenditure has supported the key objectives of the charity; - investment policy and objectives including any ethical investment policy adopted. ## **Section F Other optional information** Future plans are to employ a full time paddlesports coach / organiser / administrator. Part of their job would involve raising funds to run the charity. Our goal is to be able to take around fifty local young people out on the water once or twice weekly.
