Section D Achievements and performance

**Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year**

The main river clean of the year centred on the most visible stretch of river between Matlock Bath and Cromford and we were joined by Severn Trent’s newly created River Ranger team. It was a great opportunity to engage with Severn Trent and build links for working on solutions to litter and sanitary waste in our waterways.

There was also a mini clean organised to work with ITV on a news segment highlighting our river cleaning work and the continued pressure on the river environments. Interviews with Pete Astles and Andrew were used as part of the report.

Some of the team located a missing person while on a river clean, contacted and liaised with emergency services to allow them to recover the body.

Another successful year at Paddle Peaks main event, the Cromford Adventure weekend at the end of August. Over the course of three days, we enabled almost 280 kids to experience kayaking on the Cromford Canal. Aided by a mass of volunteers and coaches from the PeakPS team, Manor Adventure and Viking Polo, the event was once again a resounding success and proves the thirst for paddling continues locally.

The Paddle Peak club sessions continued year-round, with the 10 kids progressing onto the river in the summer gradually working up to running through the ‘slalom’ site at Matlock Bath and paddling back to Cromford. A few entered slalom events at Div 4, two are now promoted to paddle in division 3. Eadie and Alfie. Great progress and results. Local provider and supporter Jon Best also ran a whitewater safety session for the group, teaching the kids the safe way to swim rapids, use of throwlines and good practice in moving water environments. Many thanks to Jon.

Midland Canoe Club also made space available for some of our kids group to use their pool session on a few occasions, allowing them to practice safe exits, and learn to use a spraydeck, essential for progressing onto moving water.

The volunteers and children also took part in filming for the British Canoeing ‘Paddlers Code’ video, promoted nationwide. As part of the segment, we welcomed Sal Montgomery, a world class expedition kayaker, who helped coach the kids and inspire them with tales of her adventures in remote and exotic locations around the world.

We concluded the year answering a call for help from our friends at the old wireworks and the Wireworks Distillery in Ambergate with the removal of a tree, wedged on their bridge to avoid a potentially dangerous build-up of debris before high waters in the new year.
