March **2012** **TAR** 2 Paddle Peak organise regular river cleans in the Derwent Valley. Paddle Peak organise come and try paddlesports events for local young people within the Derwent Valley. Giving them the chance to try kayaking. Run regular kayaking sessions for local young people. All volunteers are experienced river paddlers. They provide their own equipment and pay their own expenses. Our coaches again are all volunteers. They provide their own equipment and pay their own expenses. March **2012** **TAR** 3 Section D Achievements and performance ## **Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year** Paddle Peak ran regular monthly river cleans on the River Derwent between Rowsley and Milford. Removing around 70 bags full of waste on each clean. Items include litter, thousands of meters of hay bale wrap, washed in during flooding, road cones, motor cycles, shopping trolleys, sewage pollution including sanitary towels and wet wipes etc…. Our volunteers removed an estimated 1000kgs of waste in 2021. Cleaning the river. Saving the sea. Our hard work featured on the BBC and ITV, raising awareness of pollution in our rivers and finding solutions to reduce it. We have been working with Severn Trent on finding ways to reduce the amount of sewage pollution that enters the River Derwent. We are planning an educational program to encourage residents and businesses locally not to flush sanitary items down the loo and not to pour cooking fat down the sink, These things block the sewer and end up overflowing into the river after rain fall. After a flood there are thousands of wet wipes caught in riverside branches. All made from single use plastic and heading out to sea. We are also involved with Derbyshire Dale District Council and Matlock Bath Parish Councils environmental projects. Trying to get more rubbish bins in Matlock Bath and attempting to inspire local fast food outlets not to use single use plastic packaging. A lot of which, sadly ends up in the River Derwent, again for our teams to clean up. Over the August Bank Holiday Paddle Peak organised come and try kayaking sessions on the Cromford Canal as part of the Cromford Mills Adventure Weekend. We gave more than 250 local youngsters the chance to try paddlesports over the three days. Expert kayakers including four times Olympic medal winner Liam Heath, just back from the Tokyo games gave demonstrations that inspired the youngsters taking part. Liam even let them try on his medals. Off the back of the Cromford Mills Adventure Weekend we began the Paddle Peak Club, taking every week, a group of ten local youngsters kayaking on the Cromford Canal. These sessions run right through the winter with help from volunteer coaches, Derbyshire County Council Countryside Services and Cromford Mills. Bin bags are donated by our local council. Canal additional information, where access and boat storage is granted by Derbyshire County Council relevant about: Countryside Service. Part of their job would involve raising funds to run the charity. Our goal is to be able to take around fifty local young people out on the water once or twice weekly.
