Barnstaple Concert Band has continued
to play in Barnstaple and the local area
at various concerts and events. The
training band is continuing to encourage
and educate playing of musical
instruments to promote the aim of the
band.

Achievements and Performance

The band have played several concerts and
events this year which have all been well
attended and enjoyed by both the band and
the audiences.

We now have a very strong woodwind
section in the senior band with several new
flutes, clarinets and saxophones joining us
during this year. There is still a strong
training ban(L and we have had new
tnjmpet players to help bolster the brass
section.
We have done several joint concerts this
year with local choirs for charity and it has
been wonderful to enjoy the contrast of
singing and concert band music.
We did a spring concert with the Chivenor
Ladies Choir and the profits were donated
to the North Devon Hospice and an autumn
concert with The Jubilee Singers and all the
money raised went to the Newport Church
restoration fund.
As the band has done for many years, we
played for the Remembrance service in
both Rock Park and then in the Parish
church. There were many military and other
organisations that were represented and our
Principal Cornet player plays the Last Post
and Reveille at both events so
professionally and with such poise for the
occasion.
The band played some Carols in the
Barnstaple High Street (subject to the
correct licence from North Devon District
Council) and this was enjoyed by shoppers
and rnembers of the public for bringing
some Christmas cheer into the town. For

this occasion, festive dress and Santa hats
are wornl
We weTe again invited to play at the
Grosvenor Chureh Carol Concert which is
always very well attended. It was a lovely
festive occasion. and the carols and
Christmas rnusic was wonderful and loved
by all those that were at the concert.
One of our Christmas concerts was in
Fremington church. This was a lovely,
festive evening which was very well
attended by a lot of the local community.
This Christmas concert featured soloists,
poetry and readings from members of the
audience and church congregation and
helped to raise money for the Church.
In order to keep the piograrnme of music
fresh and interesting, we have again
Purchased some new music this year. This
is both good for the audience to hear a
wide-ranging variety of music at concerts
and challenging and more interesting for
our players. The latest music includes SOTne
film music of John Williams and from the
film The Greatest Showman.
As we do outdoor events, the band decided
to purchase lightweight waterproof coats
for all members. These hav¢ our band logo
on the back. This decision has been
appreciated by the band, especially in
December when we are out playing carols!
The Training band is for all abilities of
playing and ineludes both children and
adults. Various styles of music aTe played
and enjoyed together to improve their
musical standards and have the experience
of playing in a band. Some people play
their 'second' instrument in Training band
to help them advance musically.
We were able to present our Band Shield to
our Young person, this year and this went
to a very talented Flute player who
achieved Distinction in her Grade 8. She is
now at university studying Medicine and
still plays with us when she is home.
There are more exciting events and concerts
planned for the upcorning months.
