accounts.
Para 1.17 and
1.19
In December 2020, the Trustees of Tiyeni
Fund (charity n° 1113274) decided to
incorporate under the name of Tiyeni. This
new CIO was registered with the Charity
Commission on 22ndApril 2021; and now
has full control of Tiyeni’s operational
activities.
Tiyeni CIO continues the work of Tiyeni
Fund in alleviating poverty by training
farming communities in Deep Bed Farming
to prevent soil erosion and encourage the
production of more and wider nutritional
crops.
The Deep Bed Farming method captures
rainwater and prevents erosion and leads
to the eradication of hunger and enhancing
social capital of farming communities.
Statement confirming
whether the trustees have
had regard to the guidance
issued by the Charity
Commission on public
benefit
Para 1.18 The Trustees have regard to all relevant
guidance issued by the Charity
Commission.

Policy on social investment Para 1.38 A key element in Tiyeni’s training of
including program related farming communities is the building of
investment social capital in those communities. This is
essential for communities to have
sustainable and enriched livelihoods.
Tiyeni only trains communities that request
it. No member of a community that wishes
to be trained is left behind.
Contribution made by Three regular volunteers have provided
volunteers much valued support to Tiyeni in the UK
Para 1.38 over the course of these 12 months.
Volunteers assisted with a variety of tasks,
including marketing, social media, web
design, and the analysis of monitoring and
evaluation data. All have made a vital
contribution to Tiyeni’s work and we thank
them for their support.

Achievements and Performance Achievements and Performance Achievements and Performance
SORP reference
Summary of the main
achievements of the charity,
identifying the difference the
charity’s work has made to
the circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any wider
benefits to society as a
whole.
Para 1.20 Tiyeni has continued to make great
progress over the 12 months to 31st
March 2025. The Trustees are deeply
grateful for the effort and support that our
donors, partners, staff in the UK and in
Malawi, government workers, local
leadership in the communities where our
hardworking farmers live, and all other
stakeholders, have collectively put into
achieving that.
Deep Bed Farming (DBF)continues to
prove itself not only as an innovation in
regenerative agriculture but also as a
powerful tool for building climate
resilience, restoring soil health and
strengthening livelihoods in rural
communities across Malawi.
With the continued global focus on
climate resilience, Tiyeni is harnessing
the impact of DBF to reduce soil erosion
and recharge aquifers through water
harvesting. We have now reachedmore
than 40,000 smallholder farmerswith
DBF; and continue to ensure a high
degree of inclusivity, with female farmers
representing over 62% of those trained in
DBF.
Tiyeni’s partnership with theSoil Food
Web School in Americacontinues to
promote work with international names in
the soil science and land husbandry world,

attracting a global audience and raising many donations towards our work. Tiyeni is still firmly committed to its three established training hubs in Northern, Central and Southern Malawi. Our “Building Resilient Landscapes” project in Mulanje was launched in August 2024 with funding from Guernsey Overseas Aid, reaching 2,650 new farmers. Tiyeni has also been awarded US$750,000 from the Global Innovation Fund for a new water-catchment-based Deep Bed Farming project in the Lunyangwa River Basin, which will reach 17,000 farmers over a 3-year period. This project is being carried out in partnership with the Northern Region Water Board, the Stockholm International Water Institute and the Malawian Government’s District Agriculture Office, thereby ensuring alignment with local priorities. We are also excited to highlight new academic work that deepens our understanding of wetlands within broader social-ecological systems. Professors Alan Dixon and Adrian Wood have written a chapter titled “ Wetlands and Landscape Approaches” for the forthcoming Routledge Handbook of Wetlands, currently under review and expected to be published in the coming year. This work makes a compelling case for adopting a holistic catchment management approach, strongly aligning with Tiyeni’s own ethos and practice. Their work challenges conventional, compartmentalised views of wetlands by:  positioning wetlands not as isolated ecological units, but as dynamic nodes within wider catchment landscapes.  for interdisciplinary thinking that bridges hydrology, ecology, politics, and local livelihoods.  framing wetlands as ‘convergence zones’ for environmental and societal processes – especially relevant in the context of climate resilience, water governance, and sustainable development. Further success has been achieved from development of the Aftrak Solar Tractor system, alongside our partners Loughborough University and The Consortium for Battery Innovation. The project not only includes a solar powered tractor to work with DBF; but also provides green energy access, thus creating climate resilient communities. Since Summer 2024,

a village north of Mzuzu has been using Aftrak’s solar microgrid and walk-behind microelectric tractor, converting fields to DBF faster while accessing clean electricity. Farmers have provided continuous feedback, which Aftrak is using to develop a new tractor iteration with upgraded components. The redesign also focuses on scaling production to reduce costs and increase affordability. Aftrak plans to establish local manufacturing in Malawi , creating jobs, training service engineers, and setting up a local sales hub to support farmers sustainably. The project as a whole is helping to address food and energy insecurity in Malawi, where 89% of people lack electricity, by pairing clean energy with regenerative farming to build resilient livelihoods. Tiyeni is also strengthening its engagement with the youth of Malawi as the next generation of Deep Bed Farmers . As Godfrey Kumwenda, Tiyeni’s Training Manager, spoke with students at a school in Blantyre, he was struck by their enthusiasm to learn more about sustainable farming techniques involving soil and water conservation. The students’ passion exemplifies the ripple effect that education and innovation can have within communities. Their eagerness to learn is vital, not only for their own futures but also for the ongoing effort to promote sustainable agriculture throughout Malawi. With the school’s support and plans to include Deep Bed Farming in the national curriculum, there is a promising future ahead where young people are equipped to lead transformation in their communities. In September 2024, Tiyeni was registered with the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR) as a cross-border charity. Malawi and Scotland have a strong history of working together – there are close and ongoing ties between the two nations – and Tiyeni had previously joined the Scotland Malawi Partnership (SMP), regularly attending key stakeholder events.

Performance of fundraising Para 1.41 We have again been successful in securing
activities against objectives funds to carry forward new projects and to
set provide continuity for existing projects. The
extent of growth and spread of DBF
methodology will always depend on raising
appropriate funding for individual projects;
and the steps described in para 1.20 above
are already yielding good results.

Financial Review

----- Start of picture text -----
Review of the charity’s Para 1.21 As stated in the opening section of this
financial position at the end Annual Report, operational activities in
of the period Malawi continued under the UK direction of
Tiyeni Fund until December 2022; at which
point they came under the control of Tiyeni
CIO.
During the 12-month period covered by the
2022-23 accounts, Tiyeni completed the
transition from its original status as a small
charitable trust (founded in 2005) to a CIO.
Total income during the year to 31 [st] March
2025 amounted to £303,832 – an increase
of 35% on the previous 12 months – of
which £288,201 was spent, principally on
training smallholder farmers in Malawi,
which is Tiyeni’s main operational activity.
Coupled with funds carried forward from
the previous accounting year, funds carried
forward at the end of this accounting year
amounted to £34,702.
Statement explaining the Para 1.22 Our policy is to build a reserve of between
policy for holding reserves 3 – 4 months’ working capital; but as our
stating why they are held signature DBF training continues to
experience very high demand, potential
reserves are frequently diverted to meeting
the most urgent elements of that demand.
However, the policy aim remains; and the
Trustees still intend to achieve this scale of
reserve at the earliest opportunity, while
also allowing the CIO’s activities to
continue to grow in line with demand.
Amount of reserves held Para 1.22 Tiyeni had no significant reserves at the
end of the 2024-25 financial year.
Reasons for holding zero Para 1.22 See statement in preceding paragraphs.

Explanation of any Para 1.23 The Trustees recognise the uncertainties
uncertainties about the arising from past/current macroeconomic
charity continuing as a going and global political events; but observe
concern that, through the hard work and dedication,
both of its employees and volunteers,
Tiyeni has shown an ability to survive, and
indeed to grow, through challenging times.

The charity’s principal Para 1.47 Our principal sources of funding in the 12
months ending 31 March 2025 came
sources of funds (including
from:
any fundraising)
a) Guernsey Overseas Aid in support of
the Building Resilient Landscapes
project in Mulanje, our Southern hub.
b) Other significant and ongoing
donations from the Dashlight
Foundation, Charles Hayward
Foundation, HBJ Trust, Halcrow
Foundation and Macdaibhidh Trust.
c) A total of nearly £50,000 towards the
Aftrak Project.
We also received £20,430 through the
Big Give appeal; and a total of £43,000
from individuals in either one-off or
monthly donations during the year.
Each of these funding sources has
performed a vital role in advancing the
spread and increasing uptake of the DBF
technique and philosophy in Malawi.
Investment policy and Para 1.46 Dissemination of DBF techniques not only
objectives including any delivers financial benefits to subsistence
social investment policy farmers; but also enhances social cohesion
adopted within those farming communities.
A description of the principal Para 1.46 The principal risks facing this charity are
risks facing the charity much the same as those facing any similar
charitable organisation. The Trustees’
primary concern is to ensure that funds are
available for each specific new project
before that project is commenced; and to
maintain a sufficient balance in unrestricted
funds to meet central overheads and “core”
costs of the operational team in Malawi.

Note 2 Accounting policies 2.2 INCOME

This standard list of accounting policies has been applied by the charity except for those ticked "No" or "N/a". Where a different or additional policy has been adopted then this is detailed in the box below.

Recognition of income
Donated services and facilities that are consumed immediately are recognised as income
with an equivalent amount recognised as an expense under the appropriate heading in
the SOFA.
The cost of any stock of goods donated for distribution to beneficiaries is deemed to be
the fair value of those gifts at the time of their receipt and they are recognised on receipt.
In the reporting period in which the stocks are distributed, they are recognised as an
expense at the carrying amount of the stocks at distribution.
Donated services and
facilities
Donated services and facilities are included in the SOFA when received at the value of
the gift to the charity provided the value of the gift can be measured reliably.
Income from interest,
royalties and dividends
This is included in the accounts when receipt is probable and the amount receivable can
be measured reliably.
Income from membership
subscriptions
Membership subscriptions received in the nature of a gift are recognised in Donations
and Legacies.
Membership subscriptions which gives a member the right to buy services or other
These are included in the Statement of Financial Activities (SoFA) when:
 the charity becomes entitled to the resources;
· it is more likely than not that the trustees will receive the resources; and
 the monetary value can be measured with sufficient reliability.
Donated goods
Contractual income and
performance related
grants
Offsetting
There has been no offsetting of assets and liabilities, or income and expenses, unless required or
permitted by the FRS 102 SORP or FRS 102.
Grants and donations
Grants and donations are only included in the SoFA when the general income recognition
criteria are met (5.10 to 5.12 FRS102 SORP).
This is only included in the SoFA once the charity has provided the related goods or
services or met the performance related conditions.
Donated goods are measured at fair value (the amount for which the asset could be
exchanged) unless impractical to do so.
In the case of performance related grants, income must only be recognised to the extent
that the charity has provided the specified goods or services as entitlement to the grant
only occurs when the performance related conditions are met (5.16 FRS 102 SORP).
Legacies
Legacies are included in the SOFA when receipt is probable, that is, when there has
been grant of probate, the executors have established that there are sufficient assets in
the estate and any conditions attached to the legacy are either within the control of the
charity or have been met.
Government grants
The charity has received government grants in the reporting period
Tax reclaims on donations
and gifts
Gift Aid receivable is included in income when there is a valid declaration from the donor.
Any Gift Aid amount recovered on a donation is considered to be part of that gift and is
treated as an addition to the same fund as the initial donation unless the donor or the
terms of the appeal have specified otherwise.
Gifts in kind for use by the charity are included in the SoFA as income from donations
when receivable.
Support costs
The charity has incurred expenditure on support costs.
Volunteer help
Donated goods for resale are measured at fair value on initial recognition, which is the
expected proceeds from sale less the expected costs of sale, and recognised in 'Income
from other trading activities' with the corresponding stock recognised in the balance
sheet. On its sale the value of stock is charged against 'Income from other trading
activities' and the proceeds from sale are also recognised as 'Income from other trading
activities'.
Goods donated for on-going use by the charity are recognised as tangible fixed assets
and included in the SoFA as incoming resources when receivable.
The value of any voluntary help received is not included in the accounts but is described
in the trustees’ annual report.

Heritage assets
Stocks and work in
progress
Stocks held for sale as part of non-charitable trade are measured at the lower or cost or net
realisable value.
Goods or services provided as part of a charitable activity are measured at net realisable value
based on the service potential provided by items of stock.
Support costs include central functions and have been allocated to activity cost
categories on a basis consistent with the use of resources, eg allocating property costs
by floor areas, or per capita, staff costs by the time spent and other costs by their usage.
They are valued at cost.
Investments
Fixed asset investments in quoted shares, traded bonds and similar investments are
valued at initially at cost and subsequently at fair value (their market value) at the year
end. The same treatment is applied to unlisted investments unless fair value cannot be
measured reliably in which case it is measured at cost less impairment.
Investments held for resale or pending their sale and cash and cash equivalents with a
maturity date of less than 1 year are treated as current asset investments
Grants with performance
conditions
Where the charity gives a grant with conditions for its payment being a specific level of
service or output to be provided, such grants are only recognised in the SoFA once the
recipient of the grant has provided the specified service or output.
Grants payable without
performance conditions
Where there are no conditions attaching to the grant that enables the donor charity to
realistically avoid the commitment, a liability for the full funding obligation must be
recognised.
The charity has intangible fixed assets, that is, non-monetary assets that do not have
physical substance but are identifiable and are controlled by the charity through custody
or legal rights. The amortisation rates and methods used are disclosed in note 9.5
They are valued at cost.
The charity has heritage assets, that is, non-monetary assets with historic, artistic,
scientific, technological, geophysical or environmental qualities that are held and
maintained principally for their contribution to knowledge and culture. The depreciation
rates and methods used as disclosed in note 9.6.1.4.
This includes any realised or unrealised gains or losses on the sale of investments and
any gain or loss resulting from revaluing investments to market value at the end of the
year.

benefits are recognised as income earned from the provision of goods and services as
income from charitable activities.
2.3 EXPENDITURE AND LIABILITIES
Liability recognition
Liabilities are recognised where it is more likely than not that there is a legal or
constructive obligation committing the charity to pay out resources and the amount of the
obligation can be measured with reasonable certainty.
Investment gains and
losses
The charity accounts for basic financial instruments on initial recognition as per
paragraph 11.7 FRS102 SORP. Subsequent measurement is as per paragraphs 11.17
to 11.19, FRS102 SORP.
Tangible fixed assets for
use by charity
The depreciation rates and methods used are disclosed in note 9.2.
Governance and support
costs
Support costs have been allocated between governance costs and other support.
Governance costs comprise all costs involving public accountability of the charity and its
compliance with regulation and good practice.
Settlement of insurance
claims
Insurance claims are only included in the SoFA when the general income recognition
criteria are met (5.10 to 5.12 FRS102 SORP) and are included as an item of other
income in the SoFA.
They are valued at cost.
These are capitalised if they can be used for more than one year, and cost at least
Redundancy cost
The charity made no redundancy payments during the reporting period.
Deferred income
No material item of deferred income has been included in the accounts.
Creditors
The charity has creditors which are measured at settlement amounts less any trade
discounts
Provisions for liabilities
A liability is measured on recognition at its historical cost and then subsequently
measured at the best estimate of the amount required to settle the obligation at the
reporting date
