Para 1.17 and 1.19 |
In December 2020, the Trustees of Tiyeni Fund (charity n° 1113274) decided to incorporate under the name of Tiyeni. This new CIO was registered with the Charity Commission on 22ndApril 2021; and now has full control of Tiyeni’s operational activities. Tiyeni CIO continues the work of Tiyeni Fund in alleviating poverty by training farming communities in Deep Bed Farming to prevent soil erosion and encourage the production of more and wider nutritional crops. The Deep Bed Farming method captures rainwater and prevents erosion and leads to the eradication of hunger and enhancing social capital of farming communities. |

Policy on social investment Para 1.38 A key element in Tiyeni’s training of
including program related farming communities is the building of
investment social capital in those communities. This is
essential for communities to have
sustainable and enriched livelihoods.
Tiyeni only trains communities that request
it. No member of a community that wishes
to be trained is left behind.
Contribution made by Three regular volunteers have provided
volunteers much valued support to Tiyeni in the UK
Para 1.38 over the course of these 12 months.
Volunteers assisted with a variety of tasks,
including marketing, social media, web
design, and the analysis of monitoring and
evaluation data. All have made a vital
contribution to Tiyeni’s work and we thank
them for their support.

| Summary of the main achievements of the charity, identifying the difference the charity’s work has made to the circumstances of its beneficiaries and any wider benefits to society as a whole. |
Para 1.20 | During the 12 months to 31 March 2024, Tiyeni has continued to grow and develop as an organisation. New systems have enhanced the speed and ease of communications between Tiyeni in the UK and Tiyeni Ltd in Malawi. New processes have also improved the way in which we prepare applications for funding, launch projects and report for our donors. More, regular meetings on training and M & E have enhanced the impact of our work on the ground with farming communities. Tiyeni is still firmly committed to its 3 fully established hubs in Northern, Central and Southern Malawi; but is also moving to a more water-catchment-based approach to the delivery of the benefits from Deep Bed Farming (“DBF”). With the increased global focus on climate resilience, Tiyeni is harnessing the impact of DBF to reduce soil erosion and recharge aquifers through water harvesting. This approach is in line with that of the Malawi Government and their 2063 Vision. Through liaison with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), Tiyeni is working with Arup on a model to deliver this on a national scale. Tiyeni has now reached nearly 40,000 smallholder farmers with DBF, through |
our 3 regional hubs; and has continued to ensure greater inclusivity, with female farmers representing over 62% of those trained in DBF. The 4[th] edition of our Training Manual, released in 2023, is now translated into 3 local languages; Chichewa, Chitumbuka and Chiyao. This work was completed in cooperation with Ministry of Agriculture officials, thereby enhancing our reach into new farming communities. Tiyeni has continued its partnership with the Soil Food Web School in America; and was again their charity partner for 2023. This liaison continues to promote work with international names in the soil science and land husbandry world, attracting a huge global audience and raised many donations towards Tiyeni's work. We have also been exploring ways to further this relationship over the coming years. Tiyeni has experienced further success from the development of the Aftrak Solar Tractor system, alongside our partners Loughborough University and The Consortium for Battery Innovation. The project not only includes a solar powered tractor to work with DBF; but also provides green energy access, thus creating climate resilient communities. In February 2024 we presented our system to the MilkenMotsepe Green Energy judges in Cape Town. Down to the final 5 from over 4,000 global applicants, Aftrak was announced the winner. The $1m prize will now be invested in further developing the system, with DBF still at the centre of how this technology benefits smallholder farmers. Tiyeni’s Country Director, Isaac Chavula, gave a presentation on DBF at the Zambezi Rainfed Agriculture Investment Forum in Botswana. The session showcased DBF's use for managing rainwater and soils, climate change adaptation and mitigation, thus contributing to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. In September 2023 our Executive Director, Alex Gerard, and Country Director, Isaac Chavula, attended the Africa Food Systems Forum Summit in Tanzania. This weeklong event is the largest of its kind in Africa and allowed our directors to speak to the many delegates about DBF. Although not formally presenting on this occasion, it provided many opportunities to advocate the DBF methodology and to increase our network throughout Africa and globally.
Following the departure of our fundraising manager, Becky Kelly, we recruited a new manager, Rosa Balliro. Her role has become fulltime (previously 3 days/week) and now includes engagement in Scotland, where Rosa is based. Malawi and Scotland have a strong history of working together; there are close and ongoing ties between the two nations. Having previously joined the Scotland Malawi Partnership (SMP), the Tiyeni Trustees have been keen for Rosa, who is based in Edinburgh, to further develop those ties and mutual cooperation. She is already working closely with the SMP and attending key stakeholder events. We have also started a process to register Tiyeni as a cross-border charity with the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR). With Rosa in place, this is expected to enhance the funding streams for our work. In September 2023, Tiyeni met up with farmers impacted by Cyclone Freddy in January 2023. It was clear that farmers using DBF had fared much better than those using conventional ridge farming. Elsewhere, DBF has continued to perform exceptionally well for farmers in 20232024; and can be shown to deliver transformational improvements in the livelihoods of those who adopt the DBF technology.

| Achievements against objectives set |
Para 1.41 | Achievements exceeded expectations during this period. |
| Performance of fundraising activities against objectives set |
Para 1.41 | We have again been successful in securing funds to carry forward new projects and to provide continuity for existing projects. The extent of growth and spread of DBF methodology will always depend on raising appropriate funding for individual projects; and the steps described in para 1.20 above are already yielding good results. |

Financial Review
----- Start of picture text -----
Review of the charity’s Para 1.21 As stated in the opening section of this
financial position at the end Annual Report, operational activities in
of the period Malawi continued under the UK direction of
Tiyeni Fund until December 2022; at which
point they came under the control of Tiyeni
CIO.
During the 12-month period covered by the
2022-23 accounts, Tiyeni completed the
transition from its original status as a small
charitable trust (founded in 2005) to a CIO.
Total income during the year to 31 [st] March
2024 amounted to £224,121; of which
£216,492 was spent, principally on training
smallholder farmers in Malawi, which is
Tiyeni’s main operational activity.
Coupled with funds carried forward from the
previous accounting year, funds carried
forward at the end of this accounting year
amounted to £19,081.
Statement explaining the Para 1.22 The priority for 2023 has been to complete
policy for holding reserves the handover of fund-raising and other
stating why they are held administrative/management functions to the
new CIO. Our policy is to build a reserve of
approximately 3-4 months’ working capital;
but as our signature DBF training continues
to experience very high demand, potential
reserves are frequently diverted to meeting
the most urgent elements of that demand.
However, the policy aim remains; and the
Trustees still intend to achieve this scale of
reserve at the earliest opportunity, while
also allowing the CIO’s activities to continue
to grow in line with demand.
Amount of reserves held Para 1.22 Tiyeni had no significant reserves at the
end of the 2023-24 financial year.
Reasons for holding zero Para 1.22 See statement in preceding paragraphs.

Explanation of any Para 1.23 The Trustees recognise the uncertainties
uncertainties about the arising from past/current macroeconomic
charity continuing as a and global political events; but observe that,
going concern through the hard work and dedication, both
of its employees and volunteers, Tiyeni has
shown an ability to survive, and indeed to
grow, through challenging times.

The charity’s principal Para 1.47 Our principal donors in the 12 months
sources of funds (including ending 31 March 2024 have included:
any fundraising)
a) The Joffe Charitable Trust – a further
£33,000 grant towards capacity building.
b) Dashlight Foundation – a commitment
to further funding of £25,000 p.a. for the
next 5 years.
c) The Network for Social Change gave
£20,999 to support work in Chiwamba.
d) £20,600 was received in donations from
individuals as either one-off or monthly
contributions.
Investment policy and Para 1.46 Dissemination of DBF techniques not only
objectives including any delivers financial benefits to subsistence
social investment policy farmers; but also enhances social cohesion
adopted within those farming communities.
A description of the principal Para 1.46 The principal risks facing this charity are
risks facing the charity much the same as those facing any similar
charitable organisation. The Trustees’
primary concern is to ensure that funds are
available for each specific new project
before that project is commenced; and to
maintain a sufficient balance in unrestricted
funds to meet central overheads and “core”
costs of the operational team in Malawi.

Note 2 Accounting policies 2.2 INCOME
This standard list of accounting policies has been applied by the charity except for those ticked "No" or "N/a". Where a different or additional policy has been adopted then this is detailed in the box below.
| Recognition of income These are included in the Statement of Financial Activities (SoFA) when: Offsetting Grants and donations Legacies Government grants The charity has received government grants in the reporting period Donated goods Support costs The charity has incurred expenditure on support costs. Volunteer help · the charity becomes entitled to the resources; · it is more likely than not that the trustees will receive the resources; and · the monetary value can be measured with sufficient reliability. There has been no offsetting of assets and liabilities, or income and expenses, unless required or permitted by the FRS 102 SORP or FRS 102. Grants and donations are only included in the SoFA when the general income recognition criteria are met (5.10 to 5.12 FRS102 SORP). In the case of performance related grants, income must only be recognised to the extent that the charity has provided the specified goods or services as entitlement to the grant only occurs when the performance related conditions are met (5.16 FRS 102 SORP). Legacies are included in the SOFA when receipt is probable, that is, when there has been grant of probate, the executors have established that there are sufficient assets in the estate and any conditions attached to the legacy are either within the control of the charity or have been met. Tax reclaims on donations and gifts Gift Aid receivable is included in income when there is a valid declaration from the donor. Any Gift Aid amount recovered on a donation is considered to be part of that gift and is treated as an addition to the same fund as the initial donation unless the donor or the terms of the appeal have specified otherwise. Contractual income and performance related grants This is only included in the SoFA once the charity has provided the related goods or services or met the performance related conditions. Donated goods are measured at fair value (the amount for which the asset could be exchanged) unless impractical to do so. The cost of any stock of goods donated for distribution to beneficiaries is deemed to be the fair value of those gifts at the time of their receipt and they are recognised on receipt. In the reporting period in which the stocks are distributed, they are recognised as an expense at the carrying amount of the stocks at distribution. Donated goods for resale are measured at fair value on initial recognition, which is the expected proceeds from sale less the expected costs of sale, and recognised in 'Income from other trading activities' with the corresponding stock recognised in the balance sheet. On its sale the value of stock is charged against 'Income from other trading activities' and the proceeds from sale are also recognised as 'Income from other trading activities'. Goods donated for on-going use by the charity are recognised as tangible fixed assets and included in the SoFA as incoming resources when receivable. Gifts in kind for use by the charity are included in the SoFA as income from donations when receivable. Donated services and facilities Donated services and facilities are included in the SOFA when received at the value of the gift to the charity provided the value of the gift can be measured reliably. Donated services and facilities that are consumed immediately are recognised as income with an equivalent amount recognised as an expense under the appropriate heading in the SOFA. The value of any voluntary help received is not included in the accounts but is described in the trustees’ annual report. Income from interest, royalties and dividends This is included in the accounts when receipt is probable and the amount receivable can be measured reliably. Income from membership subscriptions Membership subscriptions received in the nature of a gift are recognised in Donations and Legacies. Membership subscriptions which gives a member the right to buy services or other |

| 2.3 EXPENDITURE AND LIABILITIES Liability recognition Redundancy cost The charity made no redundancy payments during the reporting period. Deferred income No material item of deferred income has been included in the accounts. Creditors Provisions for liabilities 2.4 ASSETS These are capitalised if they can be used for more than one year, and cost at least £ 1,000 They are valued at cost. The depreciation rates and methods used are disclosed in note 9.2. Intangible fixed assets They are valued at cost. Heritage assets They are valued at cost. Investments k i i l d l f bl l h i lik l h Membership subscriptions which gives a member the right to buy services or other benefits are recognised as income earned from the provision of goods and services as income from charitable activities. Settlement of insurance claims Insurance claims are only included in the SoFA when the general income recognition criteria are met (5.10 to 5.12 FRS102 SORP) and are included as an item of other income in the SoFA. Investment gains and losses This includes any realised or unrealised gains or losses on the sale of investments and any gain or loss resulting from revaluing investments to market value at the end of the year. Liabilities are recognised where it is more likely than not that there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to pay out resources and the amount of the obligation can be measured with reasonable certainty. Governance and support costs Support costs have been allocated between governance costs and other support. Governance costs comprise all costs involving public accountability of the charity and its compliance with regulation and good practice. Support costs include central functions and have been allocated to activity cost categories on a basis consistent with the use of resources, eg allocating property costs by floor areas, or per capita, staff costs by the time spent and other costs by their usage. Grants with performance conditions Where the charity gives a grant with conditions for its payment being a specific level of service or output to be provided, such grants are only recognised in the SoFA once the recipient of the grant has provided the specified service or output. Grants payable without performance conditions Where there are no conditions attaching to the grant that enables the donor charity to realistically avoid the commitment, a liability for the full funding obligation must be recognised. The charity has creditors which are measured at settlement amounts less any trade discounts A liability is measured on recognition at its historical cost and then subsequently measured at the best estimate of the amount required to settle the obligation at the reporting date Basic financial instruments The charity accounts for basic financial instruments on initial recognition as per paragraph 11.7 FRS102 SORP. Subsequent measurement is as per paragraphs 11.17 to 11.19, FRS102 SORP. Tangible fixed assets for use by charity The charity has intangible fixed assets, that is, non-monetary assets that do not have physical substance but are identifiable and are controlled by the charity through custody or legal rights. The amortisation rates and methods used are disclosed in note 9.5 The charity has heritage assets, that is, non-monetary assets with historic, artistic, scientific, technological, geophysical or environmental qualities that are held and maintained principally for their contribution to knowledge and culture. The depreciation rates and methods used as disclosed in note 9.6.1.4. Fixed asset investments in quoted shares, traded bonds and similar investments are valued at initially at cost and subsequently at fair value (their market value) at the year end. The same treatment is applied to unlisted investments unless fair value cannot be measured reliably in which case it is measured at cost less impairment. Investments held for resale or pending their sale and cash and cash equivalents with a maturity date of less than 1 year are treated as current asset investments Stocks and work in progress Stocks held for sale as part of non-charitable trade are measured at the lower or cost or net realisable value. Goods or services provided as part of a charitable activity are measured at net realisable value based on the service potential provided by items of stock. |

| Work in progress is valued at cost less any foreseeable loss that is likely to occur on the contract. Debtors Current asset investments They are valued at fair value except where they qualify as basic financial instruments. Debtors (including trade debtors and loans receivable) are measured on initial recognition at settlement amount after any trade discounts or amount advanced by the charity. Subsequently, they are measured at the cash or other consideration expected to be received. The charity has has investments which it holds for resale or pending their sale and cash and cash equivalents with a maturity date less than one year. These include cash on deposit and cash equivalents with a maturity date of less than one year held for investment purposes rather than to meet short term cash commitments as they fall due. |
