Salford Families in need Meals Project CIO is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation registered on 21[st] April 2021. The Chair, reporting to the Board of Trustees, carries out day-to-day management along with the Secretary and the Treasurer, and other members of the board. The Board keeps the skill requirements for the trustee body under review. New trustees may be sought through a dialogue with candidates in relevant sectors. The ultimate decision on selection is a matter for the Board of Trustees. When new trustees are appointed, they are given an introduction to the work of the charity and provided with the information that they need to fulfil their roles.

The Salford Families in need Meals Project is a fundraising charity that exists for the benefit of the relief of poverty and of financial hardship, for those families in need with disadvantaged children. Principally, we raise these funds to provide a weekly food distribution hub to families in need with disadvantaged children, according to this charity object, in the City of Salford.

SFinMP is successful because we are a team. The Chair consults on every matter with the trustees. We look to one another’s strengths and experiences and build on these.

Volunteers do a fantastic job. Without them, the project would not work. SFinMP relies on the goodwill of volunteers to sort and bag food item bags for families in need, especially with children. Volunteers meet each week on a Wednesday to help bag food. Volunteers are coordinated by Julie Larkinson, (Community leader and former President of Eccles Rotary) who encourages members of the Eccles Rotary Club to assist each week, as well as those residents in the community, who help out.

SFinMP does not engage in grant making. However, we will make applications for grants from local bodies such as Salford City Council and Salford CVS, and other generous benefactors.

Summary of the main The Salford Families in need Meals Project has specifically targeted achievements of the charity families in need who do not have the means to cover all of their during the year outgoings. Many of our families were used to feeding their children with the parents not eating, saying they would eat later after the children had gone to bed. After two years and now in our third year, we have supported well over 390 families using SFinMP and listed below are some of the reasons why this project has been a success to date. Our success begins with local knowledge. We have also built up trust with many families and other users. We could do what we do without the auspices of Julie Larkinson, (local community leader, senior leader in schools and established governor, who has worked on the Brookhouse estate for 50 years). Julie, who is secretary of SFinMP knows these families, indeed she has taught generations of families on the estate, as a senior leader in schools and an influencer within the Eccles Rotary Club, which provides many of our volunteers. We would not have existed other than for the donations of local people and local companies. These include Morsons PLC, Mark and Maxine Smeaton, A C Clark, Eccles Rotary, Dr Enid Noronha, For Housing, Salford City Council, Salford CVS and the commitment and support of trustees. We created an infrastructure known as a food distribution hub on the BrookHouse Estate in the City of Salford. We distribute food to families in need once per week. About the food: We have an agreement with a charity, 'The Bread and Butter Thing' which sources food, that would otherwise be wasted, from supermarket chains and manufacturers. SFinMP families receive guaranteed fresh food. The food is stored centrally by them in temperature controlled warehouses in Trafford Park. The food falls into 3 categories: chilled meat and dairy products, fresh fruit and vegetables and ambient/dry goods. SFinMP families have more money to spend on other household goods and now, more for heat and lighting. The amount of food provided is equivalent to a shopping trolley's worth and typically would cost £40 to £50 per family. The Bread and Butter Thing charges £8.50 per family. Who pays for the food? The majority of the families in need pay the £8.50 themselves. SFinMP refuses no one and we will help any family in need. However, there will be some families in need who cannot afford this cost. The Salford Families in need Meals Project has established a discretionary fund, which will feed these families in need (who cannot afford £8.50).

For example, in December 2022, we undertook to support 379 families with food bags paid for by money SFinMP. We not only provided each of these families with food bags over the four weeks of Christmas – we also paid for the most needy to have cooking and house heating costs paid for on Christmas Day 2022. We could not have done this without the generous donations of local people including the LifeChurch in Eccles.

We have learnt that there is no knowing what background these families come from. Our families tell us what their priorities are in the local community. Families in need broadly fall into the following categories:

51% are on a low wage and 49% are on benefits. Those on benefits include those who could not be furloughed, such as the self-employed who did not work for themselves for three years or more and did not qualify for government help because of the pandemic.

We carry out our purposes by relying on families in need coming forward for help, by receiving referrals from local school headteachers, from local medical centres and also from local community organisations. We have also started to accrue funds to provide grants for those who have no recourse to benefits.

charity’s policy on reserves

Having established the SFinMP as a going concern, we work on the basis that we need £5000 to operate in any one year. This provides monies for us to support up to those in extreme hardship. We also have some good progress with our reserves, which at the end of 31[st] December were £18169.77 We still owe £10,000 to TBBT.

We receive the stalwart support not only of good people like Julie Larkinson but also the two members of parliament for our area, Barbara Keeley MP for Worsley and Eccles South and Rebecca Long Bailey MP for Salford and Eccles. Both attend our meetings and have been key influencers and encouragers of our work. SFinMP is also grateful to the headteacher of Barton Moss Primary School and the Prestolee Trust, who kindly agreed to allow use of the school premises for this project each week.

We have one charity bank account for SFinMP. Our accounting year showed one main expenditure to The Bread and Butter Thing (TBBT) who supplied the food distribution hub for the cost of food for Xmas 2022 We have an income for our first year of £11455. We had a bank balance of £18170 (as of 31 Dec 22) at the close of our financial year. We have a further £10,000 to pay to the Bread and Butter Thing. We have had our accounts independently examined by Mr Michael Brocklehurst – who is a retired financial accounts and audit manager.
