Our four main areas of work were: . 1. Plannir Continued scrutlny of plannlng appllcaiions $0 as to ensure we supwrted g£)d plannlng but also help expose those applications where there have been significant and identiflabie COMM￿nity (￿￿m% and those that ￿t the en¥iTNment at d5k. 2. Hedgerow Herees Thls has been our first year Sw￿rtIng the planUn8 of new hedges across HerefoTi15hire as w￿[1 as train?ng indmduals in rural Skills SLKh as hedge la￿￿9. We ran three two￿aY hedge lawng course5 twelve people on each and p￿nted 3.7km of new hedges. Planting these hedge5 brtyjght together over 1LKI volunteer5 who all helped brfn8 new Ilfe through hedges rhat sequesw carbon, help mitlgate soil loss throu2h off and, in additi¢m. provide wildlife corridors and fLyJd for aThlmals. blrds and Insects. We have worked wlth colleges and schools and hope to expand thi5 ed￿at7(￿al role in the autumn. We alw worked employers who offer tharity day5 for tkn"r stsff to hdp gTh)d cause5. 3. Dark Sktes We have been very pleased to not oThly explain the importance ol dark skle5 wfthtyjt artlfklal 118ht for nocturnal Illnators also for a t￿51￿erable number of n(Kturnal anirnab. We have achlÈved this by working wlth Parish and Town CourKIts a5 weLI as comtnunlty groups. We have dernon5trated hDw to condLKI datk Sky Surveys and as a rÉsuLt were the fitsi Eurcfthi country to wrt a prestiwous Intemational Award for this initiative. 4. Cltlzen Sden Our army of volunteers have been sampllng and testTng water in Herefordshire for nearly four years. We are part of the Wye Atlfia￿e and, as suth, the éarabase dertved from our (￿nbined readings Is now reC￿niSed as one of the very best in England. Ail our data Is analysed aNJ used by the Envlronment 4erKy to dlrect plans and actlons. Thts work and Its presentation to Government, along *ith other partners. has been successful in sjbtaining funding fiom Defra and the Wetsh Government to help understand whfch actlons may éellver favourabie ecological statsts for the ￿e catchment. Thls 15 all work In progress and our ￿aM of Citlzen Scientlsts sttll have a signlflcant role to rAay.
