Friends of Favela Brass

April 2024 to March 2025

Chair's report

The year has been a successful one with donations and funding at a level which enabled us to meet our charitable object to provide support for activities which develop the skills, capacities and capabilities of disadvantaged children in Rio de Janeiro to participate in society as mature and responsible individuals.

In this way our charitable purposes are achieved through financial and practical assistance; we support the work of the Brazilian based charitable organisation Associação Musical Favela Brass (AMFB). Our serving trustees are unchanged but now all 4 are living in England and we still communicate through online meetings to facilitate liaison with the CEO of AMFB.

The trustees are all aware of the guidance on public benefit issued by the Charity Commission and are sent all the updated and new guidance as it is issued.

In the year 2024 to 2025 we continued to purchase musical instruments, percussion and brass and other equipment to enable to provide music lessons individually and in groups. We have been able to fund a new development which is the provision of individual external examinations through the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM). Many of the students achieved distinctions boosted their selfconfidence as well as the experience of making music under examination. The examination plan will continue from November this year (2025) to encourage progression in the quality of musicianship.

Our fund-raising followed the patterns of previous years including a very successful Ceilidh organised together with a Doncaster charity which enables physically disabled children to water-ski and other related activities. A new departure was the sale of two commissioned paintings along with the usual card sales, online sales of pre-loved items.
