FRIENDS OF FAVELA BRASS registered charity 1194144

Trustees Annual Report April 2022 to March 2023

As it moves into a third year Friends of Favela Brass continues to operate with adherence to our 4 policy documents for Conflict of Interest, Donations, Monitoring and Evaluation, and Support. Our webpage is being updated as the charity’s activities evolve. The landing page is linked to Favela Brass's website whose videos illustrate the benefits to students from learning jazz music, in developing their skills and capacities to enable them to participate in society as mature and responsible individuals.

Our trustees are unchanged since last year: Sallie Ashe, Chair; John Kerr, Treasurer; Sue Riley and Melissa Beeko. Sallie and Sue continue to organise our fund-raising events in the UK and Melissa forms a link with the Board of Favela Brass in Rio as well as advising on the website. Our meetings, which are held as required, but at least 3 times a year, continue by Zoom rather than in person to enable the link between South Yorkshire and Rio de Janeiro. The Executive and Artistic Director of Favela Brass, Tom Ashe, resides in Rio and attends our meetings. Tom also hosted our Chair on her trip to see the project in April 2023 and make purchases in Rio.

The number of students at Favela Brass has increased since the Covid lock-downs and in addition to the recorders we donated last year for new pupils, we were able to buy a good quantity of percussion personalised to Favela Brass.

Building on the success of their 3 day trip to Paraty (in the Rio de Janeiro state) in June last year Favela Brass was invited again in April 2023 and their performances were highly acclaimed. FoFB were able to support this and other trips by purchasing more professional percussion and related equipment for those students who have progressed significantly in their playing. We have also purchased cases for brass instruments for travel and to protect their physical condition. Exchange trips between Doncaster and Rio remain prohibited by the inflated cost of travel and accommodation in the two countries which would mean only a very limited number of students would benefit for the moment.

Our fund raising activities are evolving. We continue with car boot sales but the funds generated are significantly reduced probably due to the rise in the cost of living which has altered purchasing habits. This may also be the reason for a decline in one-off monetary donations. Card sales and events such as a coffee morning and sponsored running bring in significant funds and plans are in place for our first ceilidh. A large collection of vinyl records has been donated whose sale will be gradual to ensure maximum value is achieved.

In order to overcome the problem of organising safe delivery of instruments and equipment between the two countries we have employed two new methods. Firstly, our chair was able to travel to Rio and purchase percussion on site with the expertise of Favela Brass's teachers. Additionally, with the assistance and experience of CAF Bank, instrument cases were purchased from a Brazilian company using international payment, which is notoriously difficult in countries such as Brazil with its widespread corruption.

Funding has been much reduced compared to the previous year mainly through a drop in substantial personal or corporate donations. Expenditure has increased by about a quarter, largely through increased spending on musical instruments to support the expansion of FB activities.

Other more generalist items continue to be purchased in Brazil online generally using Amazon Brazil which delivers directly to the Favela Brass's staff.

As we continue to support Favela Brass to inspire more young musicians, we are delighted that some of their original students are now teaching the younger children.
