The Chairs Report covers the period 1st April 2024 to 31st March 2025.

Beyond Sight Loss

Beyond Sight Loss (BSL) is one of the many organisations throughout Britain who are dedicated to enhance the lifestyle of the Visually Impaired Person (VIP). Once again BSLs Trustees focusing on reducing isolation to its members have created another memorable year. BSLs current Trustees have maintained the legacy of previous trustees influence which was dominated with such fantastic energy, they continue to strive in excellence. To further their mission, BSL has a representative that is involved with other organisations who also cater for the VIP in and around London.

Trustees and Members

Throughout the year the scheduled trusty meetings, and members monthly meetings on Zoom or in person continued. Discussions covered the different potential activities and events members wish to experience. These favourable activities and events were subject to risk assessments being conducted, this was to clarify the activity and events suitability for our members. Once the assessments were conducted, final decisions to proceed or withdraw from that particular activity or event were announced to our members at their next scheduled meeting.

BSL Members Quality of Life

BSL catering to their members needs, at the best of their ability facilitated the members favourable requested potential activities and events, These potential favourable activities and events covered a wide range of topics for members to engage at their leisure. The most popular activities and events were the following:

Measure Performance

Progression is key for the VIP within Tower hamlets and its surrounding boroughs, it is paramount for BSL to measure its performance against our previous benchmark. Where possible BSL needs to know if we can improve our service to our members.

If we are open to positive criticism perhaps we can make improvements. One way to measure performance is for feedback from members who took part in our activities and events during this financial period.

Without bias, BSLs trustees will scrutinise our performance to best serve its members. Where poor performance is found, BSL will consider this being a red flag and will address in order to make improvements. It is hoped from feedback we can measure against our annually targeted performance using the Italian economist Pareto’s law of the vital few, commonly known as the 80/20 principal.

During this financial period we asked 30 members to take part in a activities and events survey, which consisted of for tailored questions. The answers were graded 1 to 5, which 1 is equal to Strongly Disagree, where 5 is equal to Strongly Agree. The findings are below.

Q1. When asked if the activity or event was well planned.

60% of respondents believed our outings were well planned. We’re aiming to achieve a 20% increase on this particular metric by the next survey. The planning for a follow-up qualitative survey to invite further feedback and actionable insights is already underway.

Q2. When asked, If the members were adequately informed of what was required.

66.6% of respondents believed they were adequately informed of requirements. We’re aiming to achieve a 13.4% increase on this particular metric by the next survey. The planning for a follow-up qualitative survey to invite further feedback and actionable insights is already underway.

Q3. Did you enjoy the activity or event

63.3% of respondents enjoyed our activity or event. We’re aiming to achieve a 16.7% increase on this particular metric by the next survey. The planning for a follow-up qualitative survey to invite further feedback and actionable insights is already underway.

Q4. Did you have all the necessary support needed

66.7% of respondents believed they had received the necessary support needed. We’re aiming to achieve a 13.3% increase on this particular metric by the next survey. The planning for a follow-up qualitative survey to invite further feedback and actionable insights is already underway.

Podcast

The eyebelieve’ podcast was aired on various radio shows, and had the potential to reach a wider audience. With the current feedback most comforting to the visually impaired listener were the shared experiences, they entered talks to be aired on the RNIB radio show, watch this space!.

Organisations & Organisation Invites

BSL has a representative that is involved with other organisations such as:

Knowledge Exchange Circle
Orial Moorfields
Visionary Forum
Sight Village
Vipon Visually Impaired People of Newham
Vision Ability

These external relationships puts BSL in a most favourable position to keep up with the current trends designed to benefit the VIP. Under a wider umbrella BSL members can benefit from the many invites from these organisations in regards to the external activities and events these organisations facilitate for the VIP.

As well as other organisations inviting BSL members, BSL through its promotion of independence as a form of normality for the VIP, invited different organisations to share relevant information on enervative products and services that were current and available to the VIP to actively engage. Through engagement members can;

(I). Build upon their personal Experience.

(ii). Build upon their Confidence when trying new innovative equipment that can assist them through their daily routine.

(iii). Help members feel useful

(iv) Give members that sense of being part of the wider community

Throughout the year all scheduled trusty meetings, and members monthly meetings on Zoom or in person continued. All potential activities and events were relaid to the trustees, risk assessments were carried out. With information gathered decisions were made to proceed or withdraw that activity or event.

BSL measured performance from members feedback, we’re aiming to achieve an increase on particular metrics by the next survey, a follow-up qualitative survey inviting further feedback and actionable insights is underway.

Once again I can only convey how proud I am of our Management, Trustees and Volunteers. The commitment of BSL and the service provided is a tribute to its on going work within Tower Hamlets.
