The trustees present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the period 19 April 2021 to 30 April 2022. The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019).

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES Objectives and aims
To promote the art of puppetry and related performance skills for the public benefit through the provision of festival, theatrical performances, training opportunities and workshops to enable the engagement and participation of the public.
Moving Parts Arts CIO is an award-winning charity based in Newcastle upon Tyne.
Our mission is to bring North East of England people together through arts, celebration and creativity.
Our week-long puppet festival, dynamic outreach projects and participatory community events engage up to 20,000 people a year. A belief that everyone can be creative is at the core of what we do and that puppetry is a unique way of bringing people together and breaking down barriers. Our work is at its best when it is collaborative, accessible and celebratory.
Newcastle Puppetry Festival is our flagship project, which won The Journal Culture Award for 'Best Newcomer' in 2018. The ambitious programme of events takes place once every two years and includes performances and workshops for adults, children and families, as well as talks, training and networking events for professionals. Responding to the challenges surrounding Covid-19, the 2021 festival saw large-scale outdoor commission Tyne Rising - a huge community puppet show about environmental conservation at City Stadium, which involved 150 Newcastle residents and a 20-strong team of creatives.

Throughout the year we run bespoke community, education and career development projects in the city, such as our annual Puppet School and Teeny Tiny Toon, to bring creativity into the lives of Newcastle residents. We focus our community projects in areas where there is the most need and are particularly committed to working in the West End of Newcastle. Our office and studio base at the John Marley Centre is in the heart of Scotswood in the West End. We also run the annual Scratch Space - a pop-up venue at festivals for artists to try out new puppetry and visual theatre work to get audience feedback.

Puppetry is an inherently accessible, expressive and inclusive creative activity. As the puppet is an extension of the body (as opposed to acting or dancing where the performer themselves are the focus), the art form encourages freedom of expression, builds confidence and is a neutral medium to explore difficult topics and themes. Puppetry is often non-verbal, focusing on movement, enabling it to break down language, demographic and cultural barriers, allowing unlikely participants to connect through creativity and expression.

Moving Parts Arts was founded:
o To build and develop a community, audience and base for puppetry in the North East of England
o To improve the wellbeing of North East of England people through puppetry engagement and experiences
o To represent the North East of England in puppetry on a national and international platform

Between 2017-2021 Moving Parts Arts operated as a Company Limited by Guarantee. In April 2021 we were entered onto the Register of Charities as a CIO and began the process of transferring between the two structures. In February 2022 on the opening of our new CIO bank account we could officially close down the old Company Limited by Guarantee and begin operating as a CIO.

ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE
This first period for Moving Parts Arts CIO has been momentous for us to begin building the groundwork for our work moving forward in this new structure.
Three highly skilled trustees have been appointed to manage the CIO moving forward and Kerrin Tatman continues to lead the operational duties of the organisation in the Artistic Director role.
We have moved into a new shared office space in the John Marley Centre in Scotswood - a big step from our previous storage room in Alphabetti Theatre and home working.
Due to a delay in the opening of the bank account, day-to-day CIO activity began in February 2022 during this 2021-2022 period.
Moving Parts Arts CIO has begun the initial delivery of five projects of which activity will carry forward into the next period (2022-2023):
- Expanding Horizons - an organisational development project which has the following outputs: o Fundraising mentorship with specialists
o Trustee training o Policy writing and ethos development o Website and app redesign
o Puppetry workshop development for schools, community groups and care home residents
This organisational development work will put Moving Parts Arts CIO in a much stronger position going forward to fulfil our charitable purposes for the benefit of the general public. The project has been funded by Arts Council England and the Newcastle Cultural Investment Fund. 90 local participants are expected to engage with the new workshops in this project, paving the way for many more in the future.
- Teeny Tiny Toon: Benwell & Scotswood edition - a community development project which has the following outputs:
o 30 workshops for 100 participants in Benwell & Scotswood ward in Newcastle to extract stories of living in the district and to channel those stories through puppetry
o Food, access and travel support to allow anyone to participate
o Distribution of story collecting postcards to all 6,000 households in Benwell & Scotswood so that every resident has the opportunity to contribute
o 5 x artist commissions in response to the stories collected from participants
o Two Launch Event days to showcase the commissions for residents being operated by 14 local puppeteers o Installation of the commissions at partner locations in Benwell & Scotswood for residents to enjoy o A Community Arts Coordination internship for an emerging creative living in Benwell & Scotswood o An interactive website page and map to display the project outputs
We have begun securing funding for the project and have been successful with grants from the National Lottery Community Fund, Newcastle Cultural Investment Fund and the Arnold Clark Community Fund to date. We are waiting to hear on the outcome of applications from Arts Council England, Garfield Weston and various small trusts, which would allow the full vision of the project to go ahead. The project is expected to provide work to 49 creatives, engage 410 participants, present work to 3,380 live audience members and engage 5,217 audience members digitally online.
- Moving Parts Scratch Space 2022 - a pop up stage at festivals to allow emerging artists to try out new puppetry work to get feedback from audiences. Puppets in Beverley Ltd. has commissioned Moving Parts Arts to deliver the Scratch Space at Beverley Puppet F estival in July 2022, which will have the following outputs:
o 5 artists/companies will perform brand new puppetry work to get feedback from festival audiences
o 5 artists/companies will receive travel bursaries of £200 each, plus food, accommodation, festival passes and networking opportunities
We have advertised and contracted the 5 artists who will take part, appointed a Scratch Space Manager and Beverley Puppet Festival has paid the fee to allow the project to go ahead.

- Newcastle Puppetry Festival 2023 - a performance, training and participatory festival of puppetry across the city of Newcastle, which will have the follo wing outputs:
o A week of performances for adults, children and families
o Free outdoor theatre to break down socio-economic barriers to access the arts
o Participatory community co-creation projects
o An education project with students to introduce puppetry into the curriculum o Artist networking and sector development events o Masterclasses and training for puppetry artists o Online and digital content
We have begun considering programming for the 2023 festival and developing the project structure, including associated community and education projects. We plan to submit our primary application to Arts Council England in May 2022. Dates for the festival are planned to be 8th-15th April 2023. The festival is expected to reach 10,000 people.
- Elephant Rock Commission - Hartlepool Council - to celebrate the Jubilee, Hartlepool Council has commissioned Moving Parts Arts to create a three-person elephant puppet to perform at various events in June 2022. The commission has allowed in depth artistic development for three emerging puppet makers, including Jo Feijo - a rising talent in the North East of England.
For the public benefit
Moving Parts Arts CIO focuses our projects in areas where there is the most need. We are particularly committed to the West End of Newcastle, which houses some of the most under-serviced and marginalised communities in the city. We have chosen to build our base and office space at the John Marley Centre in Scotswood so that we are immersed in the West End of Newcastle community.
The trustees believe that our artistic and participatory programme demonstrates the public benefit that our work brings to the community. The trustees have considered the Charity Commission's guidance on public benefit and will use this guidance to shape our work going forward. Now that we have the CIO set up and an operational bank account, we will be in a much better position to report back on our activities at the end of the next period.
FINANCIAL REVIEW
Reserves policy
This is Moving Parts Arts CIO's first financial year. Over the next period we will work towards developing a reserves policy which has aspirations that equates to a minimum of three months expenditure. This will provide sufficient funds to cover management, administration and overheads. In this initial stage of CIO development the trustees are monitoring our strategy of building reserves at our quarterly trustee meetings.
Finance
It has been a challenging period during the transfer from Ltd. company to CIO, particularly as project activity has continued throughout the transfer and all during the pandemic. With the opening of our new bank account as of February 2022 we are now able to move forward with confidence to begin delivering and seeking funding for projects under the CIO banner to carry out our charitable activity for the public benefit.

Independent examiner's report to the trustees of Moving Parts Arts CIO
I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of Moving Parts Arts CIO (the Trust) for the period 19 April 2021 to 30 April 2022.
Responsibilities and basis of report
As the charity trustees of the Trust you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 ('the Act').
I report in respect of my examination of the Trust's accounts carried out under section 145 of the Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
Independent examiner's statement
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

accounting records were not kept in respect of the Trust as required by section 130 of the Act; or
-
the accounts do not accord with those records; or
-
the accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a true and fair view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

1. ACCOUNTING POLICIES
Basis of preparing the financial statements
The financial statements of the charity, which is a public benefit entity under FRS 102, have been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) 'Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019)', Financial Reporting Standard 102 'The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland' and the Charities Act 2011. The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention.
Income
All income is recognised in the Statement of Financial Activities once the charity has entitlement to the funds, it is probable that the income will be received and the amount can be measured reliably.
Expenditure
Liabilities are recognised as expenditure as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to that expenditure, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably. Expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under headings that aggregate all cost related to the category. Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings they have been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources.
Taxation
The charity is exempt from tax on its charitable activities.
Fund accounting
Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees.
Restricted funds can only be used for particular restricted purposes within the objects of the charity. Restrictions arise when specified by the donor or when funds are raised for particular restricted purposes.
Further explanation of the nature and purpose of each fund is included in the notes to the financial statements.
2. TRUSTEES' REMUNERATION AND BENEFITS
There were no trustees' remuneration or other benefits for the period ended 30 April 2022.
