STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT The Charity is administered by the officers/trustees of the Charity as follows: Tom Henderson CHAIR & TRUSTEE Paul Rees SECRETARY & TRUSTEE Arthur Green TREASURER & TRUSTEE Sandy Johns TRUSTEE Trustees are appointed following elecQon by members. ## OBJECTS AND ACTIVITIES Hafod Morfa Copperworks. This is achieved through working with stakeholders to provide informaQon to the public on the heritage of the Copperworks through a series of guided walks, talks and other acQviQes such as vegetaQon clearances, li_er picks etc. 3 **FRIENDS OF HAFOD MORFA COPPERWORKS** ## We have organised about 20 guided walks around the Hafod Morfa Copperworks’ site throughout the year. These include the guided walks which are open to members of the public, operating between April and September, with bespoke walks for various interest groups and walks for a number of local schools, including a visit to a local primary school to give an illustrated talk with artefacts. Two primary schools have attended on two consecutive years. All of our guided walks are free, although some groups have very kindly made donations to the Friends’ group. Some notable bespoke guided walks include: - Staff at the National Waterfornt Museum - MA Architectural students from Cardiff University - Official Wales Tourist Guide students - The Old Dyvorians The portacabin continues to act as a useful base for the guided walks and other activities we carry out on site. About 500 people have attended the various guided walks and talks throughout the year, and this has involved a mammoth effort from our enthusiastic volunteers to ensure the events have all run smoothly. We were able to host our very own Ray Collier in September 2025 with his new talk about the Vivian family at Landore Social Club. The event was free and very well attended by members of the public. We are grateful to the Committee at Landore Social Club for providing us with free use of the venue. Not only has Ray Collier spoken to our members, but he has been supporting and promoting the Friends of Hafod Morfa Copperworks further afield. He has been in receipt of donations from these groups which has helped increase our funds and we are very thankful for Ray’s efforts; in the past year he has also given talks to: - The Gower Society - Swansea East-Side History Group - Birchgrove Women’s Institute - Swansea U3A - Skewen Men’s Group - Neath Professional and Business Group A group of enthusiastic volunteers have carried out litter picks on a regular basis during the Summer months, they have collected over 30 bags of litter over the year. Vegetation clearances have also been undertaken in an attempt to keep some of the paths clear of brambles and overgrowth. The Friends’ group is very appreciative of the continued support of Councillor Mike White who has been instrumental in instigating vegetation work teams. We were able to attend Morriston Victorian Day again last Christmas. The event was well supported despite the wet weather and the event is a good opportunity for us to display our banners, share information about the work of the group and to give out our leaflets. Two members have attended several industrial heritage networking group meetings with “The Valleys that Changed the World”, which are held at different historic venues across South Wales, such as the recently renovated town hall in Maesteg. 4 **FRIENDS OF HAFOD MORFA COPPERWORKS** Once again, we were very pleased to be given guided tours of the archaeology inside the engine house compound in November 2024 by Black Mountain Archaeology. It was very interesting to discover the remains of the copperworks underground. As reported last year, the Shared Prosperity Fund (SPF) grant from Swansea Council, which we successfully applied for in October 2023, has been ongoing since the restoration project began in February 2023. With Tom Henderson of Henderson Engineering appointed as the Project Manager to restore the Musgrave barring engine, the majority of the initial work was desk based administration. The Barring Engine was successfully removed from the Musgrave Engine House in November 2024. The main body of the engine was relocated to the Henderson Engineering workshop, where members attended an open day and a closer inspection, where everyone began to appreciate the huge amount of restoration required. The main body of the engine then spent several months at Slinden Services in Tamworth in the east midlands, where £55,000 was spent to successfully rebuild the main body of the engine. With painstaking reference to original plans and contemporary photographs of the Musgrave Engine House, Tom used Computer Aided Design (CAD) and a 3D printer, to design and make full size plastic replacement components, so that Cambrian Castings could use them to create their moulds to make new engine parts. Phase 2 of the SPF grant award for £100,000 for the barring engine restoration project was due to end on 31[st] March 2026, but we are very grateful to Swansea Council for another extension of the grant to the end of September. They have been very supportive, and through our close liaison, they realise the complex nature of the project and the many delays which have been faced along the way. We continue to liaise and update CADW on the progress being made. This is a very exciting, although complex project for the Friends’ group and follows on from the successful restoration of the Musgrave gantry crane which was completed in 2020. We continue to post information about our activities on our social media platforms. We have a lot of positive feedback to our posts online, we have now reached over 1200 followers on Facebook, an increase of about 200 over the last year. ## **Financial Review** During the year the charity operated with three funds: - One unrestricted fund (Friends’ General fund) and - Two restricted project funds: Spacehive Fund and Shared Prosperity Fund (SPF) The Friends’ General fund received income of £1,393 through membership subscripQons, donaQons, the sale of pin badges and funds from Swansea lo_ery. Payments from the General fund amounQng to £752 were made for a range of resources and running costs, including insurance. The Friends’ general fund as at 31.7.24 amounted to £2,100. The Spacehive Fund was fully uQlised during the year where the remaining £496 was spent and an addiQonal £218 transferred to this fund to cover the total cost for the purchase of the generator and electrical work undertaken which amounted to £714. 5 **FRIENDS OF HAFOD MORFA COPPERWORKS** Swansea Council has provided a Shared Prosperity Fund Grant to support the restoraQon of the Musgrave barring engine. The grant is paid in stages, a balance of £36,584 was carried forward from last year and payments totalling £101,286, were received during the year. A total spend of £121,687 has been incurred on the restoraQon during the year. These included payments totalling £37,017 made during the year to Tom Henderson of Henderson Engineering, who is also Trustee and Chair of the Friends’ Group, for work undertaken in his role as Project Manager for the restoraQon of the barring engine. Payments for other engineering tasks and the rental of workshop space have also been made to Henderson Engineering. This project is ongoing. ## **Plans for the future** For the forthcoming year we will continue to provide guided walks around the copperworks site and give talks to various clubs and groups. We have a number of primary schools interested in visiting the copperworks. The development of the old Hafod Morfa Copperworks’ site over the next two years means that our portacabin will have to be relocated within the site. We are currently liaising with Swansea Council to facilitate this and to maintain an on site base for the Friends’ group. We will continue to promote our activities online, including social media and via our mailing list. Where possible we will also take part in events in the community, for example the Morriston Victorian Day and the Swansea History Day held at the Waterfront Museum. We would also like to take part in future CADW Open Doors events, however, this will be dependent on the developments within the Lower Swansea Valley Project and will require us to liaise with Swansea Council. The renovation of the barring engine will come to an end this summer, but it will not be returned to the Musgrave Engine House until the renovation of the engine houses is complete, which is estimated to be 2028.
