The Friends of Hafod Morfa Copperworks is registered with the Charity Commission ( No: 1194120) and is an Unincorporated Association.
STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT
The Charity is administered by the officers/trustees of the Charity as follows:

OBJECTS AND ACTIVITIES
The Friends exist to advance the preservation and conservation for the public benefit of the Hafod Morfa Copperworks. This is achieved through working with stakeholders to provide information to the public on the heritage of the Copperworks through a series of guided walks, talks and other activities such as vegetation clearances, litter picks etc.

Achievements and Performance during the financial year end 2024
We have organised over 20 guided walks around the Hafod Morfa Copperworks site throughout the year. This includes the guided walks which are open to members of the public, they operate between April and September, bespoke walks for various interest groups and walks for a number of local schools. All of our guided walks are free, although some groups have very kindly made donations to the Friends’ group.
In September 2023 we took part in Cadw Open Doors where we gave tours inside the engine house compound. For the first time we were able to show members of the public inside both the Musgrave engine house and the Vivian engine house, as well as showing them the machinery inside the compound. We were grateful to Swansea Council for giving us permission to operate the walks and to Penderyn Distillery and Rowecord Total Access for installing the scaffolding at the entrance to the Musgrave engine house, this enabled public access inside the Musgrave engine house. We were able to give a second set of public tours of the engine houses in October. We have also given talks to different clubs/groups off site.
The portacabin continues to act as a useful base for the guided walks and other activities we carry out on site. Over 1000 people have attended the various guided walks and talks throughout the year, this has involved a mammoth effort from our enthusiastic volunteers to ensure the events have all run smoothly.
We were able to host Clive Reed for the second instalment of his informative and interesting Swansea Canal talk which was held at Landore Social Club. The event was free and well attended by members of the public. We are grateful to the Committee at Landore Social Club for providing us with free use of the venue.
A group of enthusiastic volunteers have carried out litter picks on a regular basis during the Summer months, they have collected over 30 bags of litter over the year. Vegetation clearances have also been undertaken in an attempt to keep some of the paths clear of brambles and overgrowth.
We were thrilled to receive a donation of 3 pieces of original artwork of the copperworks by well renowned local artist Jeffrey Phillips. We have been selling limited edition prints of the original art work signed by Jeff to help raise much needed funds for the Friends’ group.
We were able to attend Morriston Victorian Day again last Christmas. The event was well supported and thankfully the weather was very kind. The event is a good opportunity for us to display our banners, share information about the work of the group and give out our leaflets.

We were very pleased to be given guided tours of the archaeology inside the engine house compound by Black Mountain Archaeology. It was very interesting to discover the remains of the copperworks underground.
We had a talk from the architect involved in the development of plans for the Lower Swansea Valley Project; this was part of the community engagement process by Swansea Council.
We applied for a Shared Prosperity Fund Grant from Swansea Council in October 2023. We were delighted that the grant to restore the Musgrave barring engine was approved. We have appointed Tom Henderson of Henderson Engineering as the Project Manager, the work on the restoration project began in February 2023. The initial work on the project has been mainly desk based, this has involved a lot of paperwork, which was required by Cadw who needed to give various permissions for any physical work to begin, this is because the Musgrave engine house and the associated machinery have Scheduled Monument status. The restoration work is ongoing into the current financial year and we continue to liaise with Swansea Council and Cadw on the progress being made. This is a very exciting project for the Friends’ group and follows on from the successful restoration of the Musgrave gantry crane which was completed in 2020.
We continue to post information about our activities on our social media platforms. We have a lot of positive feedback to our posts online, we have now reached over 1000 followers on Facebook.
Financial Review
Membership subscriptions, donations and the sale of pin badges continue to provide a modest but steady income stream for the Friends group. Our income has also been boosted this year from sales of Jeffrey Phillips’ signed prints of the copperworks artwork. Together these items have generated in the region of £1,700 which has been used to cover general running costs of the Friends’ group.
We applied for a Shared Prosperity Fund Grant from Swansea Council in October 2023 to restore the Musgrave barring engine. The total amount of the grant is worth £165,000, this is being paid in instalments to the Friends’ group. As of 31 July 2024, we had received just over £50,000 grant money from Swansea Council and had spent just over £15,000. Further monies have been spent on the project in the current financial year. We have been liaising closely with Swansea Council regarding the expenditure on the project which is ongoing.
Currently the general fund held by the Friends’ group is approximately £2,000, this is enough to cover our annual running costs, with a little left over for any unexpected expenses. The

majority of our expenditure in recent years has been funded by grants , where the funding has been earmarked for specific expenditure.
Payments of £15,773 have been paid to Tom Henderson of Henderson Engineering who is also Trustee and Chair of the Friends Group for the provision of goods and services in his role as Project Manager for the restoration of the barring engine.
Plans for the future
For the forthcoming year we will continue to provide guided walks around the copperworks site and give talks to various clubs/groups. We have had an increasing number of primary schools interested in visiting the copperworks. We will continue to promote our activities online, including social media and via our mailing list. Where possible we will also take part in events in the community, for example the Morriston Victorian Day and the Swansea History Day held at the Waterfront Museum. We would also like to take part in future Cadw Open Doors events, however, this will be dependent on the developments within the Lower Swansea Valley Project and will require us to liaise with Swansea Council
The barring engine project is ongoing, it was removed from the Musgrave Engine House in November 2024 and taken to the workshop of Henderson Engineering, the renovation of the barring engine is now taking place. The barring engine was very badly damaged and the renovation is a time consuming and complicated task. We had an open day last November at Henderson Engineering to allow members and local people the chance to view the barring engine close up before the renovation work started, we plan another open day to show the barring engine after it has been renovated.
These are exciting times for the Hafod Morfa Copperworks as the Lower Swansea Valley Project is progressing.

- I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of the above charity (“the Trust”) for the year ended 31/07/2024.
Responsibilities and As the charity trustees of the Trust, you are responsible for the preparation basis of report of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”).
I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
Independent I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have examiner's statement come to my attention (other than that disclosed below *) in connection with the examination which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect:

Tom Henderson runs his own business called Henderson Engineering, he is paid for the provision of goods and services, he invoices the charity on a monthly basis, he is not an employee.
The decision to appoint Tom Henderson as the Project Manager has been minuted. The minutes show that the trustees have followed the guidelines given by the Charity Commission to ensure there is no conflict of interest. All relevant documentation re trustee expenses and payments was provided.
