Introduction
This report covers the period from the granting of charitable status to the CIO by the Charity Commission on 16[th] April 2021, and the end of the first full financial year, July 31[st] 2022.
Carlton Operatic Society CIO took over the assets and members of the former Carlton Operatic Society following the 2021 AGM at which the membership of the former society voted to dissolve the society in favour of the CIO.
The Constitution of the CIO demands that the first AGM takes place no later than 18 months after the inception of the CIO; the first version of this report was discussed and approved at the AGM on 29[th] September 2022.
The annual accounts for the 2021-2022 season have now been independently examined; this second version of the report includes the examined accounts for discussion and approval at another general meeting, following which they will be submitted to the Charity Commission.

Structure, governance and management
Carlton Operatic Society is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation, governed with an ‘association model’ constitution.
Trustees for the charity are elected by the membership at the annual general meeting (AGM), for a period of up to three years, and are responsible for the management of the Society. They receive no remuneration for their role as trustees. Further trustees can be appointed as necessary to the board by trustees between AGMs, subject to those appointed trustees resigning at the next AGM. Trustees need not be members of the charity prior to their appointment or election.
The charity has no employees.

Objectives and activities
The object of the CIO is to promote and improve general education in relation to all aspects of the art of drama and musical theatrical performance for the public benefit.
After two years of enforced inactivity due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Carlton Operatic Society returned to “normal” activity in January 2022. Having used the pause to undertake the transition to a CIO, the trustees were keen to get back to the purpose of performing musical theatre. Our production of “Shrek The Musical” was performed at the Nottingham Theatre Royal in early May 2022, to a very appreciative audience. We were able to make a number of tickets available to schools and youth organisations at a discounted rate, and one school in particular brought 100 children to see a matinee performance, many of whom have never had the opportunity to see live theatre previously. We are keen to do more to enable this access for future productions, and are investigating how this might be supported in conjunction with local businesses. The successful production will mean that we have a surer foundation from which to continue this work in future years, beginning with our 2023 production of “Kinky Boots”.
The trustees of the Society have paid due regard to the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit in deciding what activities the charity has undertaken this year.
Achievements and performance
The main achievement of the charity for the period in question was the successful mounting of our production of “Shrek the Musical”. 5550 people saw the show over the week, many of whom were children. The reviews from the professional reviewers were glowing, but comments from the audience such as this show that the power of musical theatre to inspire is significant:
“Saw the show this afternoon. Absolutely amazing! It’s was my children’s first full length show and at the interval, my youngest wanted it to just carry on without a break! Well done to all involved for all your hard work and amazing performances. It was just brilliant! Enjoy the final show!”
We invited the local children’s charity Footprints to collect money after each of the performances, and they reported a good collection and positive audience feedback.
Financial Review
During the 2021-2022 period our expenditure totalled £118,828 and our income totalled £124,456.
We hold reserves of funds in order to ensure that we are able to continue to produce theatrical productions; we aim for those funds to be sufficient to allow for a very unsuccessful production to not reduce the funds available to the charity to the point at which it is not possible to produce further productions. The funds of the CIO need to continue to grow to reach this secure position, but the trustees are satisfied that the reserves currently held allow us to continue with our planned productions from 2023 and 2024. At the end of the 2021-2022 financial year the accounts showed that we had £39,130 held in reserve.
