## **ANNUAL REPORT 2021-2022 LEAF -  Locally Encouraging All to Flourish** 

## **Aims and Purposes** 

LEAF is a Christian Charity established to help with the ‘well-being’ of people in Ledbury, with a focus on supporting people to flourish individually and as members of their communities. It grew out of the Ecumenical work in the town, with all the churches working together to support the community 

## **Objectives and Activities** 

The charity aims to support people across the whole of their lives, not characterised by any particular need. 

LEAF is broken down into a number of ‘well-being’ strands (physical, emotional, spiritual, and children) all of which come together to bring a coordinated approach and focus to support people. 

## **Achievements and Performance** 

## _Physical Well-Being_ 

A CAP (Christians against Poverty) Debt Counsellor, is funded to work in Ledbury one day a week and has a number of clients in the area. LEAF supports this work through CAP Befrienders. To date, four people have been befriended by three different volunteers. 

## _Emotional Well-Being_ 

The first Kintsugi Hope (emotional well-being) course concluded in December and was well received by all who attended. A new course has just started up in April and is reaching a greater variety of people within the community. Some are coming through CAP contacts, others through the work of the GP chaplaincy (see below) and there is clear evidence that the “joined up” thinking that LEAF offers is reaping a rich dividend. LEAF now has two professional counsellors who work in the community. It is hoped that another counsellor will be added to the ranks as we develop a funding stream for this work. With the links made with the Primary School 



(see below) one of the counsellors is now supporting one of the children and their family in the school. There is potential (funding permitting) for this work to grow. 

## _Spiritual Well-Being_ 

One exciting project is the development of a GP chaplaincy service that now operates within the surgery in the town. This started in January and the two chaplains have had over 55 referrals so far from the GPs. There is scope for this to expand and the hope is that recent grant requests will release funds to enable this. 

## _Children_ 

LEAF held two highly successful events in the summer, one was held in the local park and attracted 89 children. This was followed up in the autumn by The Light Party, with 43 children attending, and the Advent party which was also well attended. It is also worth noting that these events have been supported by 25 volunteers from all the churches within the town. Alongside these events LEAF purchased Advent Calendars for each class (Real Advent Calendar) in Ledbury and Eastnor Primary Schools. LEAF also supported a new event, a Nativity Festival, which was held at the Methodist Church. 

Tony (the Chief Executive) and an ex-teacher visit Ledbury Primary school each week to mentor some of the more challenging children. This is the genesis of a longer-term project as there is a high possibility that these children will maintain a link with LEAF through the Youth Drop-in in future years. LEAF also has a representative on the governing body of the school as one of the trustees was appointed to the board recently. 

Plans are in the initial stages to build on the mentoring and offer some children alternative provision in the afternoon based around gardening projects in the school grounds 

## **Financial Review** 

When LEAF was established in April 2021, money in Ecumenical Fund was to be transferred to LEAF. The LEAF bank account was set up in July 2021 with £1,000 from the Ecumenical fund. As the CEO salary continued to be paid from the Ecumenical fund until February 2022, the remaining transfer did not take place until then. This totalled £12,535.30. 

The source of this funding was from individual donations, funding from Ledbury churches and funding from the Diocese. Funding from the Diocese is restricted for 



the salary of the Chief Executive. Some individual donors have indicated that they wish their donations to be similarly restricted for this purpose. 

The majority of the expenditure in this first year of operation for the charity was for the Chief Executive’s salary. 

At the year end the Charity had a balance of £34,562.55. This does not include the funds to be claimed from HMRC through Gift Aiding. 

A reserves policy will be established in 2002/23. Due to the nature of the Charity’s funding in some months receipts will be less than expenses and it will be necessary to hold reserves to pay the Chief Executive’s salary. In future years it is hoped that LEAF will be able to access grant funding, both to expand the work of the charity and to provide more financial stability.

## Notes 

## Restricted Funds 

Funding from the Hereford Diocese is restricted for the salary of the LEAF CEO. Also restricted for this purpose were funds held at St Michaels that were transferred to LEAF. Going forward some donors have indicated that this is how they wish their donation to be used. 

## Note 1 

The majority of the donations were transfers from St Michaels ecumenical fund. Until LEAF was established in April 2001, churches in Ledbury funded the LEAF CEO via the Ecumenical Fund, held at St Michaels church. Funding continued to be paid into this account for many months after LEAF was established. This included almost all of the donations from individuals who worship at Ledbury Baptist Church, and the donation from Ledbury Baptist Church. 

It means that in 2021-22 it is not possible to analyse in a meaningful way the donations to the charity. 

## Note 2 

The CEO costs are gross salary (including Tax and NI) travel expenses, telephone and training courses. LEAF did not begin to pay this salary until February 2022. The Ecumenical fund paid £34,425.32 in the previous months from April 2021.
