Type of Governing Document
Constitution – based on the Charity Commission’s model governing document for Charitable Incorporated Organisations.
Objects
As defined in the Paisajes Piano Festival Sierra de Gata Constitution (Governing Document) our objects are:
- for the public benefit, to promote the art of piano music, in particular but not exclusively, classical piano music through the means of an annual music festival delivering professional music performances and associated educational workshops.
Trustee Selection Methods
Trustees are appointed or re-appointed by a resolution passed at a properly convened meeting of the charity trustees. There must be at least three trustees and no more than 12.
In appointing Trustees due consideration is given to ensuring that the Trustees have the personal qualities and, between them, the skillset necessary to manage the charity effectively and in accordance with charity law.
The process is - set out the criteria;
-
advertise internally (full membership) and externally if appropriate;
-
shortlist/consideration by the full board of Trustees;
-
nomination, induction, training.
c) Activities

d) Achievements & Performance
Outputs and Outcomes
Key Outputs
The second edition of the Paisajes Piano Festival Sierra de Gata took place over 5 days from the 12[th] to 16[th] of August 2023. Eight pianists gave eight evening concerts that were planned and widely advertised locally and internationally. All concerts were free of charge to the public at large. A Festival brochure was available in which the Artistic Director introduced the Festival and each pianist talked about the pieces they were going to play, their personal development as pianists, their most valuable experiences, the composer who has most inspired them, and their approach to each performance.
Concerts were introduced by the musicians who spoke about the pieces that they played. Ramon Grau, a young Spanish pianist, played key works of relatively unknown Spanish composers of piano music and gave a lecture with detailed explanations of their links with Andalusian folklore and Spanish history, the references to Arabic, Gipsy and other music traditions, the roots of Flamenco and their place in the development of Spanish classical piano music.
Carolina Cury gave the world premier of Helen Ottaway's “Paisajes Imaginados”, commissioned especially for the Festival.
The evening of the 15[th] August was dedicated to new cinema music – Simone Tavoni played his own composition to accompany his home produced cartoon and Ashley Hribar performed his own composition to a screening of Robert Weiner's 1920 masterpiece “The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari”.
Audience numbers were between 90 – 120 for each concert and the age range was between 1 – 80. Numbers are perforce approximate as all concerts were unticketed and the general public had free and unfettered access throughout the Festival.
Key outcomes
The Festival attracted an audience that was pre-dominantly local but included a significant number from further afield in Spain, particularly Madrid, and from other countries including France, the UK, and Turkey. The international audience was testimony to the high standard of music and performers. For the local audience, which included a number of children and young people, the Festival provided their only opportunity to experience classical piano music of this standard and to learn something about the pieces played. Audience feedback was without exception positive, supportive and enthusiastic.
How the Public Have Benefitted.
The festival brought to a rural part of Spain classical piano music of a standard rarely found outside established capital city cultural centres.
Audiences heard the world premier of a piece by a contempory composer performed by a rising star in the field of contemporary music, a concert/lecture on lesser known Spanish composers by the composer and resident pianist at the Zarzuela Theatre in Madrid. The film night included two original works performed by pianists with international reputations.
All concerts were free of charge and the general public, predominantly local people, were welcomed and encouraged to attend, meet the musicians and composers, and interact with festival volunteers.
Trustee Development
Trustees are encouraged to participate in development opportunities as and when appropriate. They have developed a Code of Governance and Responsibility by adopting the seven principles set out in the Code published by The Charity Governance Code Steering Group.

e) Financial Review
Details of Any Funds Materially in Deficit
The Charity has no funds which are materially in deficit.
Policy on Reserves
Our policy on reserves is to generate and maintain a balance which is sufficient:
-
to preserve the financial viability of the Charity in the event that unforeseen and/or unavoidable circumstances precipitate a short-term fall in its income;
-
to enable the Charity to set up new projects on a pilot basis to demonstrate the viability and potential benefits of such activities as a precursor to securing the necessary funding to maintain them on an on-going basis.
For these purposes we will endeavour to generate and maintain reserves which are at least 10% of total annual income.
Principal Sources of Funding and Outgoings
Of the £9,993 raised, £2,855 was donated by Festivals sponsors £2,975 were unsolicited donations from concert goers, £2,162 was raised from direct sales of drinks, food, brochures, and Festival Tee shirts, and £2,000 were grants from other charities supporting classical music initiatives.
Of the £10,372 total outgoings, £4,968 was for musicians fees, travel, and accommodation, £2,345 was for instrument hire and tuning, £930 for materials for the stage.
Remuneration of Trustees
All Trustees act in a voluntary capacity and receive no remuneration or other material benefits from their services to the Charity. Simone Tavoni, Trustee and Artistic Director, gave one of the four concerts without remuneration.
The Trustees met all their own travelling and accommodation costs, and received nothing for any expenses arising from their services to the Charity.
Financial Status
Our current balance of £3,067 provides more than adequate pump-priming for the next edition of the Festival in 2025 and enables us to undertake fund raising and minor charitable events planned for 2024.
Statutory Statements on Liabilities
The Trustees declare that:
-
The charity has given no guarantees where potential liability under the guarantee is outstanding at the date of this statement;
-
The charity has no debt outstanding at the date of this statement which is owed by the CIO and which is secured by an express charge on any assets of the CIO.
