There must be at least three trustees and no more than 12. In appointing Trustees due consideration is given to ensuring that the Trustees have the personal qualities and, between them, the skillset necessary to manage the charity efectively and in accordance with charity law. The process is - set out the criteria; - advertise internally (full membership) and externally if appropriate; - shortlist/consideration by the full board of Trustees; - nomination, induction, training. ## **c) Activities** _Small Charity Support: Trustees’ Annual Report & Financial Statements_ _Page 3 of 6_ ## **Statutory Declaration** The Trustees confirm that they have paid due regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit in deciding what activities the charity should undertake. ## **d) Achievements & Performance** ## **Outputs and Outcomes** ## _Key Outputs_ The first edition of the Paisajes Piano Festival Sierra de Gata took place over the four days from the 12[th] to 15[th] of August 2021. Four pianists performed the four evening concerts that were planned and widely advertised locally and internationally. All concerts were free of charge to the public at large. Concerts were accompanied by a booklet in which the Artistic Director introduced the Festival and each pianist talked about the pieces they were going to play, their development as pianists, their most valuable experiences, the composer who has most inspired them, and their approach to each performance. Each concert was introduced by the pianist who spoke at length about the pieces that they played. The final concert/workshop was given by Ramon Grau, a young Spanish pianist, who interwove his performance of key works of relatively unknown Spanish composers of piano music with detailed explanations of their links with Andalusian folklore and Spanish history, the references to Arabic, Gipsy and other music traditions, the roots of Flamenco and their place in the development of Spanish classical piano music. Audience numbers were between 80 – 100 for each concert (twice the anticipated number) and the age range was between 1 – 80. Numbers are perforce approximate as all concerts were unticketed and the general public had free and unfettered access throughout the Festival. ## _Key outcomes_ The Festival was attended by an audience that was pre-dominantly local but included a significant number from further afield in Spain, particularly Madrid, and from other countries including France, the UK, and Turkey. The international audience was testimony to the high standard of music and performers. For many of the local audience, which included a gratifyingly large number of young people, this was their first experience of classical piano music of this standard. Audience feedback was enthusiastic. A local film crew attended and the Festival featured in a short film promoting the culture of Sierra de Gata. The first and last days of the festival ended with a bufet at which musicians, members of the audience and volunteers were invited to attend free of charge and talk about the music and share experiences of the Festival with each other and the organisers. ## **How the Public Have Benefitted.** The festival brought classical piano music of a standard rarely found outside established cultural centres to a rural part of Spain. The concerts were free of charge and the general public, predominantly local people, were welcomed and encouraged to attend, meet the musicians and interact with festival volunteers. ## **Trustee Development** Trustees are encouraged to participate in development opportunities as and when appropriate. They have developed a Code of Governance and Responsibility by adopting the seven principles set out in the Code published by The Charity Governance Code Steering Group. _Small Charity Support: Trustees’ Annual Report & Financial Statements_ _Page 4 of 6_ ## **e) Financial Review** ## **Details of Any Funds Materially in Deficit** The Charity has no funds which are materially in deficit. ## **Policy on Reserves** Our policy on reserves is to generate and maintain a balance which is sufficient: - to preserve the financial viability of the Charity in the event that unforeseen and/or unavoidable circumstances precipitate a short-term fall in its income; - to enable the Charity to set up new projects on a pilot basis in order to demonstrate the viability and potential benefits of such activities before seeking the necessary funding to maintain them on an on-going basis. For these purposes we will endeavour to generate and maintain reserves which are at least 10% of total annual income. ## **Principal Sources of Funding and Outgoings** Of the £6,373 raised, £4,398 was donated by sponsors and members of the Charity, £1,597 were unsolicited donations from concert goers, and £378 was raised from direct sales of drinks and Festival T-shirts. Of the £5,004 total outgoings, £2,205 was for instrument hire and tuning, £1,879 for musician fees and travel, £360 for materials for building the stage, £315 for catering and £239 for publicity and printing. The remaining £6 were bank charges. ## **Remuneration of Trustees** All Trustees act in a voluntary capacity and receive no remuneration or other material benefits from their services to the Charity. Simone Tavoni, Trustee and Artistic Director, gave one of the four concerts without any remuneration. Whilst the Trustees agreed to pay the Artistic Director’s travel expenses for one of two trips from London to Malaga and Hoyos Spain, he later made a donation of an equal amount. No other expenses were paid to any of the Trustees. ## **Financial Status** Though modest, our current balance of £1,369 provides pump-priming for the next edition of the Festival in 2023. Fund raising events are planned in 2022 and 2023. ## **Statutory Statements on Liabilities** The Trustees declare that: - The charity has given no guarantees where potential liability under the guarantee is outstanding at the date of this statement; - The charity has no debt outstanding at the date of this statement which is owed by the CIO and which is secured by an express charge on any assets of the CIO.
