Charity details** Charity name: foodbank.community Charity registration number: 1193997 ## **2. Objectives and activities** The objects of foodbank.community, which are to be carried out in Essex and Havering, are “To relieve those in need by reason of youth, age, ill health, mental health, disability, financial hardship or such other social or economic disadvantage by the provision of a food redistribution service taking surplus food and distributing to charities and charitable organisations.” We operate as a registered food redistribution charity in areas of Essex and Havering. The charity was set up with the support of Hutton & Shenfield Union Church (H&SUC), who take responsibility for the insurance of the volunteers as part of their mission. Enid Gear, trustee, acts as a representative of foodbank.community at H&SUC and works with Dan Brimelow, Debbie Catton, Adele Bywater and Rachel Patel (other trustees), who are linked to St Mary’s Church. The charity was set up to help deal with the devastating impact of the Covid pandemic and both churches are supportive of its work. Surplus food is collected from local supermarkets and is redistributed to partner organisations, where it is made available for their service users to collect. Many of our partner organisations also operate a delivery service and are well placed to signpost their users to other local organisations for support. foodbank.community is able to collect fresh produce, including fruit and vegetables, which is an invaluable boost to the tinned and dried goods that most foodbanks traditionally offer. We have helped establish four Sunday ‘pop-up’ foodbanks that regularly serve between 20– 40 families. During the week, we deliver to foodbanks and homeless organisations in Essex, as well as to a community pantry in Havering that is supported by the local council. All of these organisations run projects that match the objects of the charity. We are in the process of consolidating, as well as expanding and developing, this work and the current estimate is that together with our partner organisations we support ~675–750 people each week. In explaining how the activities of foodbank.community meet the public benefit of its work, the trustees have met the requirements of the Charities Act 2011. 1 ## **3. Achievements and performance** Since becoming a registered charity, foodbank.community has sought to consolidate established food collection rounds and to expand to serve partner organisations in neighbouring areas where less surplus food is being repurposed to support the local community. ## Environmental impact: It is hard to measure foodbank.community’s environmental impact accurately. However, we can gain insights by looking at the charity’s statistics on Fareshare’s Foodiverse platform, which provides data regarding our collections from KFC, Nando’s, Tesco and Waitrose only. During the reporting period, the platform reported that from just these four retailers foodbank.community has: - made 2,198 food collections. - collected 103,017kg of food. - collected the equivalent of 248,778 meals. - saved 330,359kg of CO2 emissions. As foodbank.community collects from three times this number of retailers (12 in total), the charity’s environmental impact in terms of stopping surplus food being sent to landfill sites is significant. ## Other notable successes/achievements: - foodbank.community was awarded a Stars of Brentwood Award in October 2021. - Lidl published an article featuring the work of foodbank.community in their 2021 Christmas magazine. - The work of foodbank.community was featured in an article in Essex Life Magazine in January 2022. - foodbank.community volunteers transported toy donations from customers at Lidl Chelmsford to various charities (Kids Inspire – Chelmsford, The Salvation Army – Chelmsford and the Sunday pop-up foodbanks) in time for Christmas 2022. ## **4. Structure, governance and management** Constitution of the charity: Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) Governing document: The charity uses the Charity Commission’s Foundation CIO model constitution. The current trustees of foodbank.community are the founding trustees, so no recruitment has yet taken place. The organisation is currently a foundation CIO, with all formal members of the charity also acting as trustees, hence there are no elections but anyone can apply to join the board. Trustees may also co-opt people on to the board by asking them to apply. The charity operates an Equal Opportunities and Diversity Policy where the trustees are responsible for championing equal opportunities and diversity. The charity aims to ensure that any recruitment process is free from unlawful discrimination. Adverts for trustee recruitment will state that “foodbank.community is an equal opportunity employer and 2 values diversity”. All applications will be assessed by the board and may be accepted if they are considered conducive to the charitable objects and current strategy of the charity. The charity is currently considering recruiting a Deacon from Hutton & Shenfield Union Church, as well as recruiting a trustee with financial expertise to enable the charity to explore fundraising. Fundraising could enable foodbank.community to consider, for example, reimbursing the expenses of volunteers, employment roles, printing recruitment flyers or simple recipe cards for partner organisations to distribute to clients, and so on. ## **5.
