Love Purfleet is a registered charity No 1193961
Its registered address is c/o Socketts Heath Baptist Church, Premier Avenue, Grays, Essex RM16 2SB
The trustees during this period were: Andrew Wade (Chair), Claire Blatchford, Alison Shorter and Ashley Lovett (stepped down June 2022).
Structure and Management
Love Purfleet is a CIO. The principal purposes of the Church are the advancement of the Christian faith according to the principles of the Baptist denomination. The Church may also advance education and carry out other charitable purposes in the United Kingdom and/or other parts of the world.
In the first half of the year the four trustees met on a monthly basis. The trustees are also representatives of other organisations:
Andrew Wade, Socketts Heath Baptist Church
Rev Claire Blatchford, Eastern Baptist Association
Rev Ashley Lovett, previously minister at Socketts Heath Baptist Church (Stepped down June 2022)
Alison Shorter, Upminster Baptist Church and Urban Expression.
There is a wider steering group to support the trustees and provide resource and other support. Since mid 2022 the meetings of the trustees and steering group have taken place on alternate months.
The steering group are :
Rev Simon Goddard (Rivertree) (Stepped down July 2022)
Malcolm Dunk (Upminster Baptist Church)
Rev Tara Frankland (Anglican Team Leader for Mardyke Team Ministry)
Rev Charlie Kosla (Anglican Fresh Expressions and previously at All Saints Church, Chafford Hundred). (Stepped down July 2022
Sandie Edwards Cranham Baptist Church, (Appointed March2022)
None of the trustees or the steering group receive any payment for their work.
Activity in year
Love Purfleet purchased a flat at 31 Windermere Avenue, Purfleet-on-Thames, RM19 1PZ and was able to take possession of this in very early November 2021. This flat provides accommodation for the missional listener to live in and be based within the Purfleet-onThames community. Love Purfleet it the beneficial owner of this property whose ultimate trustees are the Baptist Union Corporation. It was purchased mainly using designated funds held by BUC resulting from the sale of the former Purfleet Baptist Church in 2009.
Rev Erica Bowler had taken up the post of missional listener at Love Purfleet from 1[st] September 2021 following her graduation from Spurgeons College.
Erica was tasked as a missional listener to explore the needs and requirements of the community in Purfleet-on-Thames for a twelve month period from 1[st] September 2021 and to prepare an audit and report with recommendations and directions for taking the work forward after that.
Rev Erica Bowler was employed on a 50% basis to undertake this work. Her 50% stipend was funded by an approved 2022 Home Mission grant from the Eastern Baptist Association. The grant was drawn down monthly to cover salary costs while Erica was in post.
Erica gave three month’s notice in May 2022 and completed her employment on 31[st] August 2022. In June the trustees wrote and agreed a new ministerial profile for the pioneer role and this was advertised on the Baptist Pastoral Vacancy List in order to recruit someone new.
We had received no enquiries before Erica left and we kept the vacancy listing renewed and active until end December 2022 but still received no enquiries or applications.
The trustees decided to commercially let out the vacant apartment to generate income whilst we were without a pastor to live in the flat. The flat was let to tenants from 1[st] September 2022 through agents William H Brown and the tenants also directly cover the costs of utilities and council tax themselves.
The planned work at Purfleet has stalled and at the 2022 year end we have no person in place to take forward the recommendations in the Missional Audit and develop the work in Purfleet-on-Thames.
A full Home Mission grant for 2023 has been made but this can only be drawn down when the pioneer pastor is in post.
The charity has a bookkeeper to manage and prepare accounts. Love Purfleet is registered with HMRC for Gift Aid (Ref No ZD14689) and with Stewardship for giving to be made through them.
Love Purfleet has a written Safeguarding Policy in place (based on the Baptists Together template) and the Safeguarding lead is Alison Shorter.
Financial Report
A financial statement and accounts is attached separately. This has been independently examined as our annual turnover just exceeded the limit of £25,000.
Love Purfleet does not currently have a reserves policy.
