Our primary activity is to rescue poodle cross dogs (“doodles”) either from situations where they have been abandoned or from families who no longer want them/ cannot cater for their needs. This can be for many reasons – a change in family circumstances (eg illness/ change of employment status/ new baby/ relationship breakdown) or the doodle has behavioural issues (eg resource guarding/ bite incidents/ health issues), and the family cannot cope or feel that it may be a threat to their family dynamic to keep the dog. These are often very sad situations as owners generally don’t wish to give up their much-loved pet but feel they have no alternative. We support those families while finding out as much as we can about the doodle. The doodle is then placed into a carefully vetted foster home to assess them prior to placing them with their adoptive family. This assessment often involves vets and behaviourists as well as the foster family to find ensure that we find them the most suitable “forever home”. We maintain a Facebook page so that new owners can provide updates on our ever-increasing doodle family. This is also a place where we can launch fund raisers for dogs with high costneeds (eg surgery) and appeal forboth fosterand permanenthomes. |

Para 1.20 | We have a very small team of volunteers at any one time who cover all aspects of what we do. This includes governance, financials, fund raising, contracts, correspondence, complaint handling as well as the core operation of rescuing doodles, vetting foster homes and finding forever homes after extensive checks. This year 2 of the 3 Trustees have had to step back from core operations which means that this falls mainly to one Trustee, Susan Green, who additionally is providing an incredibly valuable mentoring service to those who contact us thinking of giving up their doodle. This makes a massive difference as often there are other ways we can support the family, so they are able to keep their much-loved pet. Increasingly we are being contacted by Social Services/ police/ Carers/ neighbours and large dog rescues, such as the Dogs Trust, about vulnerable dog owners to see what support we can provide. Sometimes these doodles have been neglected in recent months and need both physical and behavioural support before they can be placed in their forever home. We are also often involved in the rescue of abandoned doodles and taking into care doodles with serious health issues that could potentially be euthanised. These doodles require even more extensive support involving bringing together a wide network of specialists and volunteers. Often, we need to fund raise for these doodles at the same time to cover vet and behaviourist costs. Sadly, sometimes having put all the wheels in motion and provided the support needed, we can find that the issues have been caused by an underlying health condition so serious that we have no choice but to euthanise, as heartbreaking as this is. One such doodle is Rocco. We received a phone call on a Friday afternoon from a vet where Rocco had been booked in to be euthanised. The vet had called multiple dog rescues who had all declined to assist prior to contacting Doodle Recue. A frantic weekend with all hands-on deck, and a wonderful vet nurse who agreed to foster him so we could fund raise as he had highly contagious ear infections needing bilateral ear canal removal. Trainers were involved to support him with his subsequent hearing loss, and he was placed with some of our most experienced fosterers. Rocco was admitted to The Ralph Veterinary Hospital for the surgery, with his fosterer staying in a nearby Travelodge for the duration. Sadly, there is no happy ending here – he was so traumatised, and once we found a lump on his neck we all knew that we just couldn’t put him through any more. This was absolutely the right thing for poor Rocco, and it was heart-warming to see our whole Doodle community pull together to support him. We take comfort from the fact that his last weeks were happy ones with the best possible love and care. |

Para 1.21 | Our accounts at the end of the financial year show that we have a balance of £66,243 compared to an opening balance of £52,518. This is good news – thanks to some incredibly generous donations and brilliant fund-raising from our Doodle supporters, we have been able to cover all expenses from donations and adoption fees. |

Para 1.22 | As our family of doodles grows, we find ourselves supporting more and more doodles with lifelong conditions for which we put a contingency in place when they are adopted to support their new family with vet bills. Doodles such as little blind Maddie recently started to have seizures requiring an emergency MRI and spay– it isn’t always obvious what the underlying condition is, and it can cost more than anticipated. Although we put a limit on each fund, we want to ensure that the family feel confident that they can continue to provide the best level of care possible. Vet fees continue to rise and although we will fund raise for doodles with particular needs,weneed to be able to coverthese costs ona timely basis. |

Para 1.23 | We have a very small bank of volunteers and most of our work is from one person only – Susan Green. We acknowledged this last year in our report and stated that we needed to find a way to support her as her voluntary work has not only encroached on, but completely overtaken her time. We looked at several different options and realistically the very best thing we could do was to financially reimburse Sue with a token amount each month to allow her to continue with what she does for our doodles and their families. Sue has been running the rescue charity from her home garden office for the past 10 years and the workload has increased steadily each year. The £100 per month goes some way to compensate for the additional utility costs incurred. We are looking at ways to recognise our most dedicated volunteers, who consistently provide support to the Charity. Once scheme we are looking at is to appoint Ambassadors – both human and doodle. As well as being a way of acknowledging and recognising what they do for us, they are also the “face” of our charity and hopefully will encourage others to donate and support us going forward. |
