THE CHRISTCHURCH FOUNDATION NEW ZEALAND LIMITED Company Number 5172644

ANNUAL REPORT TO JUNE 2021

What we do –to create a better Christchurch New Zealand

We are a UK charity that exists to help people to make the Greater Ōtautahi Christchurch New Zealand better, particularly following the deeply scarring moments in recent history.

It is our aim to secure funds and then distribute them to changemakers, social enterprises and community leadership organisations that are working to deliver financial and socially measurable returns, whether its via projects or ongoing relationships.

Established in 2019, we received our charitable status in the UK in 2021, and are Gift Aid registered since 24 June 2021 under HMRC reference ZD12793.

We are part of a growing global network of foundations and charities across the world that focuses on Ōtautahi Christchurch. Our lead sister organisation is a New Zealand charity (The Christchurch Foundation) and we work closely with them. We have formal contractual agreements in place, through which they provide us with both administration and distribution support, at nil cost and grant funding to meet out small administrative costs. They also act on our behalf in Aotearoa. This approach means we can help those of you that love the city to invest philanthropically on an informed basis, based on credible research, and with excellent networks on the ground.

We are focused on geographical districts of the Christchurch City Council, Waimakariri District Council and Selwyn District Councils in Canterbury, New Zealand. However, we know that most people do not think in local government boundaries. So, if you want to help a little further afield, we are happy to talk.

A Little More History

The 2010/2011 earthquakes highlighted the need and opportunity for a strategic approach to philanthropy in Christchurch. Many cities, corporates and individuals from around the world wanted to gift to the city’s recovery, to do their bit.The appalling shock and loss of the 15 March 2019 mass shootings has added to further dimensions to the need to help people recover and rebuild.

After the earthquakes, a mayoral fund and a central government initiative were launched to act as vehicles to enable this, but neither were developed with a long-term view.

The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (CERA) spent some time investigating options for various models and “ownership.” CERA advised the Christchurch City Council in 2015 that they deemed this area one for local government. Post that decision the City established a Funding Steering Committee. The committee consisted of Mayor Lianne Dalziel, Cr Raf Manji, Cr Tim Scandrett, and two local philanthropic experts Louise Edwards and Amy Carter. Latterly Cr Andrew Turner and the then CEO Karleen Edwards were co-opted.

This group, with the assistance of SGL Funding, recommended to the Council that a Community Foundation be established following a global trend where cities are providing an entity for the transparent management and facilitation of major gifting and business partnerships. These types of entities have been around for over 100 years in the UK, Europe and the USA where there has

traditionally been a more strategic approach to philanthropic activity. High profile examples include Tel Aviv, New York and London.

The Christchurch City Council approved the establishment of a Community Foundation in August 2016 and the intention to establish The Christchurch Foundation was publicly announced in February 2017. Our sister organisation is independent of the Council but received establishment funding to get up and running. The Christchurch Foundation became a registered New Zealand charity in 2017, chaired by Humphry Rolleston. Staff were appointed later that year.

The Foundation now has a global reputation for its work to make greater Christchurch better through innovative programmes, driven by both donor and resident identified priorities.

How we do it

We’re a registered charity here in the United Kingdom. We and the Foundation in New Zealand are both charities, and so both must comply with charities regulation in each country.

You don’t give to the Christchurch Foundation, as ultimately you give through us to projects and causes in our city that are important to you and to our residents. Gifts can be directed to a project, a specific geographic area or to a range of causes. Or contributions can be passed on at the discretion of the NZ Foundation Trustees under a developed set of guidelines and policies to ensure charitable use.

What we do

Our first reporting period up to the end of June 2021 was our set-up, curtailed by Covid. During the period we received two substantial donations, amounting to £178,201 and we were in receipt of £6,000 administration support funding from our NZ sister charity. To date, not a penny or cent of donor money has been spent on administration or expenses, other than transaction charges and third party professional services with not connection to the Trustees.

Donations are all to go to the ultimate destination for as long as the NZ Foundation is separately supported and grants a small amount to us to cover the costs of operating as a charity her in the UK.

Now that life is returning to normal, we do intend to organise events to raise awareness and funds. These will be publicised on our website at christchurchfoundationnz.org.uk.

Who we are

The Trustees in the UK (and NZ) are volunteers. We have no paid team members in the UK. Trustees from the start were and remained for the reporting period Nic Coward, Karen Pflug, Sam Martin, Stew Whitehead, and Humphrey Rolleston (based in NZ). Nic is the odd one out, having never been to Christchurch, but all the others have lived in the City, and some still do. We work closely with the NZ Foundation team, led by Amy Carter.

Our address is 49 Greek Street, London, W1D 4EG, United Kingdom (the address of our accountants Paul Beare Ltd) and we can be mailed at hello@christchurchfoundationnz.org.uk.
