BREADtrust exists to support partner church networks in countries facing significant poverty and economic pressures. We help our partners to serve the poor in their communities and to develop robust church communities.
The work of BREADtrust this year has continued to be busy. The attritional nature of the Ukraine war continues. Our Ukraine project team has been particularly busy and high levels of funding for Ukraine humanitarian projects continues.
Meanwhile we have been making steady progress in our Zambia project.
During the course of the year, we have continued to build relationships with potential partners in Pakistan, considering a project we may support.

Ukraine
The humanitarian situation in Ukraine remains deeply concerning, as the conflict continues to affect countless innocent lives. Hostilities persist, with Russian military forces frequently targeting civilian infrastructure. As a result, significant portions of the population - particularly from the eastern and southern regions - have been forced to flee their homes as Internally Displaced Refugees (IDPs), seeking relative safety in the western parts of the country.
This displacement has left many individuals and families without employment and with severely limited means to support themselves. The loss of income, stability, and community has placed an immense burden on those already traumatised by war.
Through the generous support of our donors, BREADtrust continues to work closely with our trusted partners in Ukraine to serve those most in need. Our efforts have focused on delivering critical humanitarian assistance, emergency accommodation support, and food provision through our soup kitchen initiative.

While diplomatic dialogue continues at the international level, there remains no immediate indication of an end to the conflict. In the face of such uncertainty, our resolve remains firm. We are committed to standing with the vulnerable and displaced, ensuring that practical support and compassion are extended to those who need it most.
Our hope and heartfelt prayer is for a swift and peaceful resolution to the war. Until that day comes, we will continue to uphold our responsibility to care for the innocent - who invariably bear the greatest suffering in times of war.

Zambia
The past year has been a challenging year for BREADtrust Zambia. We lost our dear brother Austin Hamankolo to cancer in May 2024 and his contribution to our work and to the communities he served cannot be overstated.
Since Austin’s passing, we have built very good relationships with recognised leaders that Austin had identified as people that we would work with in the different locations. These people are Livers, Casey, Evans, David and Raymond. Further to this, the drought in Zambia caused widespread crop failure and our communities were not spared. The fact that Makuka (Mapanza) had a fully functioning borehole meant that this community was able to grow vegetables and water their livestock.
Boreholes
In the year, we had funding approved to drill a further two boreholes:

⦁ Hamabwantu, Mapanza, Southern Province

⦁ Kamachanga, Kabwe, Central province
Despite drilling to over 100m in both locations twice, no water was found. This is particularly disappointing as the surveys (on all occasions) pointed to there being water at shallower depths. A decision was made that we would pause drilling until we could visit the areas personally; Roland West and Greg Le Roux will visit in May 2025. It needs to be stated that we still believe that the borehole initiative will continue to be a priority in years to come as droughts are becoming more severe.

Foundations for Farming (FfF)
For the year, we provided maize seed and fertiliser to ten farmers for 16.8 x 39 metres (655 m2) plots. It has been agreed that this will be the last time we provide maize seed as the practice of supplying seed year after year is not in keeping with our focus on sustainable projects that do not need to be serviced every year.
Rainfall in the last season was good and there is much relief in the communities. “No-one will grow hungry in the year to come” are the words of one of our incountry co-workers. We are so grateful for this wonderful outcome for this community.
Goats
Two nanny goats and one male goat that were given to some elderly ladies (co-operative members) in Mapanza in 2023 have all born kids. These eleven young goats have been given to other families in the community as follows:

Bee Farming
The churches in Mapanza put up seven beehives in late 2023. The revenue from the honey harvested from these hives will go towards the running of the churches and this is being managed by the co-operatives made up of church members and overseen by the chairman.

Training of Area Coordinators
In preparation for his retirement in 2025/2026, Austin started with the training of area coordinators. These men are all of good standing in their churches and have been endorsed by their respective pastors/apostles.
Training of new leaders has become even more important with Austin’s passing and a further five delegates will attend the FfF ‘Inspire Zambia’ conference in Mkushi in April 2025.
To date, the coordinators that we have had the most dealings with have been Livers in Mapanza and Evans in Kabwe. Evans is a deacon in the church run by Apostle Casey Kalaso and David.
Summary
The planned trip in May 2025 will have long term strategic implications as we look to build and extend our relationship with other parties in the country. It is hoped that Casey Kalaso will play a key role in this and he will be travelling with Roland West and Greg Le Roux when they visit the country in May.
We continue to be encouraged by the fact that through the year, people have continued to be very generous in their prayers and the giving of time and finances to support the work in Zambia.

Pakistan
In 2024, BREADtrust launched a Church and Community Transformation (CCT) Project in a disadvantaged area of Rawalpindi. To strengthen ties with potential supporters, we facilitated a visit for the church leader to the UK in 2024.
In September 2024, two trustees from BREADtrust travelled to Rawalpindi to
engage with and support the churches participating in the CCT project. This visit included a presentation to the designated CCT church base and a meeting with a national CCT Coordinator. Additionally, the trustees participated in three preaching engagements and conducted a presentation and teaching session for the church leadership team, focusing on the proposed action plan for the CCT project.
This year, we have successfully raised and allocated funds for the construction of a guard room and a two-story office suite at the main church, which will be responsible for planning and overseeing the Community Care Team (CCT) in Rawalpindi. Both of these preparatory projects are nearing completion. Church leadership is actively engaging with the community and the national coordinator to initiate the development of a Community Development Plan (CDP). This plan will be instrumental for BREADtrust in mobilising resources for prioritised projects.
