# **Annual Report** March 2023 - April 2024 Charity No: 1193882 BREADtrust Annual Report 2024 BREADtrust exists to support partner church networks in countries facing significant poverty and economic pressures. We help our partners to serve the poor in their communities and to develop robust church communities. The work of BREADtrust this year has continued to be busy. The attritional nature of the Ukraine war continues. Our Ukraine project team has been particularly busy and high levels of funding for Ukraine humanitarian projects continues. Meanwhile we have been making steady progress in our Zambia project. During the course of the year, we have continued to build relationships with potential partners in Pakistan, considering a project we may support. We are sincerely grateful to our many donors upon whose generosity our work depends. Phil Downward Chair of Trustees BREADtrust Annual Report 2024 ## **Ukraine** The situation in Ukraine throughout 2023 and into 2024 remains very precarious, with the Russian forces continuing to seemingly target civilian locations. As areas in the East and South continue to be attacked, Internally Displaced People (IDPs) continue to move Westwards to find safer areas of the country to live in. This has left many refugees with no jobs and therefore very limited resources to care for themselves and their families. In response to this plight, BREADtrust has continued to be innovative with raising money and distributing throughout our network on the ground in Ukraine. We continue to send financial support into Ukraine. This is for our network to purchase food and hygiene products, clothing and basic medical supplies for distribution (the Ukrainian supply chain has continued to operate). In addition to this and through external funding we are now also able to offer emergency accommodation support in 3 areas for those hardest affected: Kyiv, Rakhiv and Kropyvnytskyi. Throughout this year, all 3 cities have continued to receive a steady flow of IDPs in great need. In Kyiv this year the church has also begun to run a soup kitchen for refugees in need. With no obvious end to the war in sight, we continue this important work with our partner network in Ukraine; this is likely to continue throughout 2024 and into 2025. Our hopes and prayers are for a swift resolution, as the innocent are always the hardest hit – our mandate is to continue supporting the innocent for as long as necessary. BREADtrust Annual Report 2024 ## **Humanitarian Centres** The ‘ **House of God’s Grace** ’ church in Kropyvnytskyi have been providing humanitarian aid to over 1000 refugees each week. The ‘ **House of Prayer for All Nations** ’ church in Rakhiv have been providing humanitarian aid to 200 families per month. The ‘ **Gospel of God’s Grace** ’ church in Kyiv have been providing humanitarian support and running a soup kitchen for hundreds of people in need. The church in Kyiv, who are central to the distribution of aid, acquired a new warehouse in November 2024 with BREADtrust funds. This has helped to store and organise aid in an orderly way, to enable streamlining of distribution and delivery where it is needed. **----- Start of picture text -----**

BREADtrust Annual Report 2024 ## **Accommodation Projects** In Kropyvnytskyi, the church identifies families from amongst the hundreds of refugees collecting humanitarian aid who have the greatest need and provides one-off assistance with rent payments for accommodation. This provides families with the start-up rental costs for the first month whilst they find a way to pay the rental costs ongoing. **----- Start of picture text -----**

In Rakhiv, the church have been renting a small hotel to provide a safe home for internal refugees, providing for 5 families. Alongside housing and food provision, they continue to support those needing psychological rehabilitation, and job-seeking for those able to work. **----- Start of picture text -----**

BREADtrust Annual Report 2024 ## **Zambia** On Greg Le Roux’s visit to Zambia in April 2023, Austin Hamankolo raised the notion that for the year to come, we should focus on projects that would provide local communities with longer term sustainability, rather than just providing seed and fertiliser inputs on an annual basis. ## **Boreholes** The consensus was that boreholes should be a priority, followed by the planting of fruit trees that would provide a yield in 1 - 5 years, and trees for timber which were a longer term plan of 20 years. Bee hives and goats for the elderly who could not participate in the Foundations for Farming initiative were also agreed. With available funds we were able to provide 3 boreholes. The one in Mapanza was drilled in the financial year 2022-23, and in the financial year 2023-24 2 boreholes were successfully handed over to local communities. Both these boreholes are overseen by local churches that Greg Le Roux visited and met with the leaders: ## **1. Word of Grace Church, Chamboli, Kitwe** ## **2. Christian Discipleship Church, Kabwe** The borehole initiative will continue to be a priority in years to come as droughts are becoming more severe. BREADtrust Annual Report 2024 ## **Foundations for Farming (FfF)** For the year, we provided maize seed and fertiliser to 10 farmers for 16.8 x 39 metres (655 m[2] ) plots. Due to the drought, the yield from these plots was poor, with only a couple of farmers being able to reap a harvest of any significance. It is encouraging to note that the success of the farmers who did get a yield was largely down to them applying Foundations for Farming principles. Livers (with Roland West), who produces enough maize and oil for himself and his 14 dependents, by applying FfF principles. ## **Chicken Run Project** Of the 10 Farmers who received 150 chicks in 2022 there were only 2 who were able to pay back their loan and get a second batch of chicks. All the other farmers made commitments to pay back the loans but none of them were able to do so. The project was intended to be self-funding after the initial investment but this has not been the case and no further investment is being considered. ## BREADtrust | **Zambia** BREADtrust Annual Report 2024 ## **Goats** Ten elderly ladies in Mapanza each received 2 nanny goats and 1 male goat. Due to their age, they have not been able to participate in the Foundations for Farming or chicken run initiatives. Austin felt that goats, which do not demand much attention, were a good way to honour them and get them to benefit from the work we are doing in the community. The arrangement is that the first born from these ‘flocks’ would go to other farmers in the community and we have seen some news of this happening but are not aware of the details. ## **Bee Farming** The churches in Mapanza put up 7 beehives in late 2023. We have a report that thus far 2 of these hives now have bees. The revenue from the honey harvested from these hives will go towards the running of the churches and this is being managed by the co-operatives made up of church members and overseen by the chairman. BREADtrust | **Zambia** BREADtrust Annual Report 2024 ## **Training of Area Coordinators** In preparation for his retirement in 2025/2026, Austin started with the training of area coordinators. These men are all of good standing in their churches and have been endorsed by their respective pastors/ apostles. In addition to this, they are all Foundation for Farming practitioners and well acquainted with the benefits. These men are: - Hamabwantu Mapanza / Southern – **Livers assisted by Davison** - Kitwe / Copperbelt – **Raymond** - Central (Kabwe) – **Evans** - Southern (Sikaunzwe) – **David** - Western – **Timothy** _Evans is pictured here at Christian Discipleship Church, Kabwe, which is led by Apostle Casey Kalaso._ With Austin’s passing (May 2024) and no obvious main point of contact for the country, it does look like we will be dealing with each person in their respective areas individually. To date the coordinators that we have had the most dealings with have been Livers and Evans (he takes instruction from Apostle Casey Kalaso and David). We have had little to no interactions with Raymond and Timothy. ## BREADtrust | **Zambia** BREADtrust Annual Report 2024 ## **Zambia** ## **Summary** It’s been a busy year and the 3 boreholes have proven to be successful in providing a reliable source of good water to the communities they serve. Due to a number of factors, some out of the control of the people we serve, the shorter term projects have not provided the results we had hoped for. What is encouraging is the fact that through the year, people have been very generous in their prayers and the giving of time and finances to support the work in Zambia. BREADtrust Annual Report 2024 ## **Pakistan** ## _**A project in the discovery phase**_ In June 2023, Jamie Muir, Tim and Andy visited Rawalpindi to build relationships with the PFK group of 7 churches in Pakistan. During the visit, Jeremiah and Jamie Muir, along with Andy and Tim, met to discuss the BREADtrust proposal for a project among the poor. There is a potential of working with Jeremiah on a community project. We are still researching projects that we could be involved with in the future.
