BREADtrust Annual Report 2022 - 2023

BREADtrust exists to support partner church networks in countries facing significant poverty and economic pressures. We help our partners to serve the poor in their communities and to develop robust church communities.

This has been one of the busiest years on record for the charity. The main cause of this was the heightened activity in Ukraine in the aftermath of the Russian invasion in February 2022. Our Ukraine project team has been particularly busy and our funding for Ukraine has increased significantly. Meanwhile we have been making steady progress in our Zambia project. During the course of the year, we also began to consider a project in Pakistan and an exploratory visit was made.

We were delighted to welcome four new trustees onto our board – Jen Roberts, Joanne Muir, Greg LeRoux and Roland West.

Ukraine.

The situation in Ukraine throughout 2022 and into 2023 remains very precarious, with the Russian forces continuing to seemingly target civilian locations. The impact on the nation of Ukraine is profound and far reaching, it has created a scale of migration out of the country that has never been seen before. Equally the impact in country, has left many internally displaced refugees and even more people with no jobs and therefore very limited resources to care for themselves and their families.

In response to this plight, BREADtrust has continued to be innovative with raising money and distributing throughout our network on the ground in Ukraine. We have successfully imported food stuffs, hygiene products and generators into Ukraine from Romania. We continue to send financial support into Ukraine, this is for our network to purchase food and hygiene products for distribution (the Ukrainian supply chain has continued to operate). In addition to this and through external funding we are now also able to offer emergency accommodation in 3 areas for those hardest affected. The latest need is for volunteer support, many of the workers used to have jobs but now no work is available. Therefore, we have been able to assist them with financial gifts to enable the continuation of their excellent work in serving the hardest hit in Ukraine.

With no obvious end to the war in sight, we continue this important work with our partner network in Ukraine; this is likely to continue throughout 2023 and into 2024. Our hopes and prayers are for a swift resolution, as the innocent are always the hardest hit – our mandate is to continue supporting the innocent for as long as necessary.

Zambia.

Due to reduction of available funding, a decision was made to focus on one area and work with a local community in Mapanza (Southern Province). There were several projects undertaken:

Foundations for Farming (FfF):

We supplied 15x10kg bags maize seed (DK 80-33), fertilizers D compound 15x50kg and Urea 30x50kg to 58 persons, Sunflower 6x5kg to 12 persons, each doing a 16.8x39mtrs (655 sqms) who applied FfF (Foundations for Farming, a zero tillage, highly efficient means of growing crops). The harvest was successful (pictured) but lower than hoped due to the lack of rain in the latter part of the growing season.

1) Chicken Runs:

This is a new initiative and after training and building satisfactory dwellings for the chickens, 10

Farmers received 150 chicks each. They reared the chickens and sold them into the local community. This project is geared to be self-sufficient and once running effectively can ensure that the farmers will have a continuous cycle of rearing and selling chickens. After some initial setbacks, the project is moving forward with some of the farmers getting the second round of chickens.

2) Borehole

Sufficient funds were raised for this project and Christ Central Churches

3) Onsite visit

After several years of not being able to visit Zambia, it was good to once again meet our in-country partners and the communities that we have been working with.

The intention of the trip was:

Review the benefits that BREADtrust funding has delivered to subsistence farmers.
Get a better understanding of the current needs.
How BREADtrust can be a more effective partner in the alliance we have with CCC Zambia and the communities they serve.

BREADtrust also has a desire to see how it can expand the programme to regions other than Southern province and the visit provided the opportunity to identify further opportunities. It was primarily a road trip of 2,000+ km that started in Kitwe in Copperbelt province, working through Central province and

ending up in Southern province. Several churches, FfF centres and communities were visited which gave a real sense of the situation on the ground, the needs, and opportunities in the communities and what could be achieved. The result of the visit is a that a number of viable projects have been identified.

5. Ministry of the gospel

On the back of the FfF visit programme, time was taken to minister the gospel. Water baptism and breaking of bread were conducted.

Pakistan.

Pakistan is a country six times the size of Ukraine, with a population of 243million (96% Muslim & 4% minorities).

A Newfrontiers church in Pakistan was started in 1998 with 9 people. This has grown to 2,300 in 7 churches, now overseen by the founder’s son.

These churches had historically been overseen in the UK by the Catalyst sphere of Newfrontiers churches, but in June 2020 they requested strategic help with this task from the Christ Central sphere of Newfrontiers UK.

In July 2020, money was sent from CC Shropshire Churches to assist during the Covid pandemic.

In Nov 2021 at a “ Christ Central Shropshire Mission Day” - money was raised to help them purchase a vehicle.

In August 2022, one of the trustees, went to visit the Pakistan churches, along with three other church leaders from the Catalyst sphere, to assess their needs. Following this visit further money was sent to help with relief following the severe flooding -particularly the residents of Nowshera where church families had to be evacuated from their houses and take shelter in the church building. Food and Medical aid packages were assembled and distributed to 60 families including 10 Muslim and 6 Hindu families.

Funding needs identified in August 2022:

Ongoing leadership support in the form of a regular monthly allowance to the leader so that he can work full-time for the church, and to employ a "bookkeeper", which would release him to pray and minister, rather than doing administration work.
Capital Expenditure projects
a) Central PKF church: The church has land in Rawalpindi, and the government have allowed them to put up a temporary hall, but planning permission for the proposed building is about to expire, and they will have to reapply.
b) PFK Adayala. A satellite church in a very deprived area of Rawalpindi has a building with leaking roof, and a toilet block which both need repair at an estimated cost of £10 - £20,000. There is also some land for sale at the back of the church, which could be purchased to increase the church capacity and ensure its security.
Costs relating to training: Leadership training, Bible training, Microfinancing

The Trustees have agreed that assistance for this work would fit into the ethos of BREADtrust, being “to provide practical support for the poorest of communities through hands on and sustainable projects run by people in their communities for their communities” To this end, a further visit to Pakistan is planned in June 2023 with strategic partners from other parts of the Newfrontiers network.
