## 25[th] Annual Report

## April 2021 – March 2022 Including the accounts

BREADtrust is a Registered Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) 1193882

Welcome to our annual report! Thanks for taking the time to find out more about the work of BREADtrust. We are very pleased to have been able to continue our support for our partners in Zambia and Ukraine despite the significant difficulties caused by the continued Covid pandemic and also the invasion of Ukraine. Unfortunately, only a brief personal visit to our partners in Ukraine during this period, was possible in October. We have kept in close contact with them through on-line means and our financial support has continued to flow. We are grateful to our donors, both regular and new, for their loyal and sacrificial support during this past year and for the increased income when we launched our Appeal after 24.02.22.

Martin.

The Trustees for the year were: Martin Charlesworth (Chair) Beryl Green (Secretary) Roger Bebb Philip Downward Ray Green Simon Heys James Muir Nicholas Priggis (resigned 19.01.22)

The Trustees met on two occasions by video link and / or face-to-face on 22nd September 2021 and 19[th] January 2022.

## Governance

Late in March 2021, BREADtrust the CIO (Reg. No. 1193882) was formed. This officially took over the assets of British Eastern Aid Doorways (Reg. No. 1064603) on 22.09.21. Unfortunately, the relevant bank accounts were not able to be closed until April & May 2022, and British Eastern Aid Doorways not removed from the Central Register of Charities until June 2022.

## **Objects, Principal Activities and Organisation of the Charity’s Work**

The objects of the Charity, as stated in its Trust Deed, are to promote:

_1. The material assistance of the Poor,_

_2. The advancement of Education,_

_3. The advancement of the Christian Religion: in Countries of the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe and other Countries of the World as opportunities arise._

These are achieved by providing financial, material and practical help to the people with whom we work.

In a year again dominated, in the early part, by the response to COVID 19, and in the closing months by the invasion of Ukraine, the focus of BREADtrust could not be entirely shifted, as the humanitarian work in a usual non COVID year was still as valid and as important as ever. However, the war situation presented a number of additional problems and issues and these had to be met with a fairly rapid and urgent response.

In Ukraine, BREADtrust continued to follow the strategy proposed in earlier years with the work of distributing humanitarian aid in the form of clothing, food and medicines continuing from both Kyiv and the designated warehouse in Kropyvnytskyi. The onward bound distribution of clothing and other items, as in previous years, was spread across the country to the churches associated to the “Triumphant Grace” sphere of churches.

Specific needs in different churches were met by BREADtrust:

a) boiler repair for one church so they could continue meeting and carrying on the distribution of humanitarian aid;

b) 100’s of food parcels in many of the churches;

Distribution of food parcels c) during the winter months (November to March) hot food stations in various cities and assistance with many medical needs. This was extended after the invasion to help meet the need of many people with up to 120 people being fed a week.

The ongoing financial support of Pastor Igor has enabled the continuation of his excellent work and leadership of Triumphant Grace churches. This has helped greatly in terms of communication and development of the work as he plans with his Core Team of two other pastors. Coupled with the assistance of Polina, helping with the incountry financial control, BREADtrust has gained greatly from a governance perspective.

The increased generosity of BREADtrust givers and significant donations from Christ Central Churches (CCC) enabled BREADtrust to meet the need of many affected by poverty, COVID and the war. Considerable numbers of people received various levels of assistance, from medication and hospital bills being covered to food parcels in response to their economic hardship. A visit to Romania by a Trustee and Romanian friend, in March, helped start the purchase in Romania and delivery into Western Ukraine, of a number of items specifically requested by Igor & his team. We are especially grateful to the friend’s wife,

for spending many hours co-ordinating the purchase and delivery of this load.

We had hoped that in 2021/22, the official registration of “Triumphant Grace” sphere would have been completed. This had stalled due to COVID and is now on hold until a ceasefire can be brokered and the civil government is able to restart its business. When complete, this will assist in governance purposes both in country and for BREADtrust.

In the meantime, finance has been transferred for the purchase of vehicles to distribute goods, to finance soup kitchens, mainly in Kyiv and to stock and restock distribution centres for food, clothing, hygiene and personal items.

In conclusion, please continue to pray for the leaders and churches in Triumphant Grace and the continued financial support of BREADtrust through the generous giving that has been sustained for many years.

Our work in Zambia continues:

This financial year continues to have been dominated by the effects of COVID-19. Restrictions in movement in Zambia have meant that travel for Foundations for Farming training has been curtailed. However, our partners, Newfrontiers Zambia, are continuing to improve the prospects of sustainable livelihoods in rural Zambia through training farmers in Foundations for Farming and developing market gardening and chicken production in Southern Province.

BREADtrust supported the sinking of a borehole in FY19-20 and this has now resulted in our partners in the Kasungula District (Southern Province) starting market gardening.

64 people took part in the Foundations for Farming programme this year. Crops in the lowlying areas were affected by flooding and in the upland areas by drought. Overall, the farmers have done well but the yields have suffered accordingly. Sunflower seed had also been supplied as a cash crop but again the yields suffered due to the floods.

It had been hoped to scale down support for the group planting one hectare of maize, but unfortunately this will not be possible as, although they will be food secure, they have insufficient income to purchase further inputs.

Our partners in Zambia now recommend that early maturing varieties of maize are used in place of the medium to late maturing varieties that had previously been used in an attempt to maximise the yield.

In FY 22/23, outreach will be focussed in the Mapanza area (Southern Province), due to a reduced budget. We will continue to support the training of farmers in Foundations for Farming and launch a “Chicken Run Project” in this area.

If additional funding becomes available, we will extend the support given to the rural areas where we have trusted partners, to assist these communities to become more food secure and improve the sustainability of their farming methods.
