Trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit.
The main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to the Foundation’s objects are promoting and sharing research, scholarship and performance to add to the collective awareness, knowledge and appreciation of the music of Peter Tranchell. The Foundation makes its educational materials and activities available to the public through the Foundation’s website, social media, awareness raising with relevant groups of musicians and professional societies, and public performances. Section D Achievements and performance
## **Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year**
2024-25 was the fourth year of the Foundation’s operation as a Registered Charity. Our main achievements in this year have been:
- Continuing to ensure that the Foundation is **well governed**
- Building on achievements in previous years – in particular the PAT Centenary in 2022 and the launch in 2023 of the annual Peter Tranchell Composition Prize – to deliver programmes to **promote our objects**
- Ensuring good **stewardship** of existing funds and continuing to **raise further funds** to support ongoing and future activities
## **Governance**
No Trustees have resigned or been appointed in 2024-25. The current Trustees continue to bring a wide range of relevant of experience in music publishing, composition, performance, finance, fundraising, business and governance.
Trustees held four formal meetings (all by videoconference) in 2024-25, supplemented by occasional written resolutions (by email) and frequent discussions between some or all of CH, CF, JG and JS on operational matters and to prepare for strategic discussions at Trustees’ meetings.
## **Achieving our Objectives**
As reported last year, in 2023-24 the Foundation instituted an annual **Peter Tranchell Composition Prize** . The topic for 2023 was an Advent Carol. This attracted 13 entries with the winning piece being premiered at New College in Oxford and subsequently broadcast on Radio 3 in a performance by the BBC Singers. The topic for the 2024 Prize was Tranchell’s Lost Songs, with entrants invited to submit two or more songs with total duration of up to 10 minutes, using titles of PAT songs for which the music has been lost. We received 18 very high quality entries. The first prize was awarded to Will Harmer for his songs Lullaby and Summer Dance. Second and third prizes went to Ian Shaw and Guy Turner and commendations were offered to a further four entrants, including one who had started composing in her 70s. The Foundation is enormously grateful to the Panel of distinguished judges which David Hill has chaired since the first competition in 2022 who give of their time and expertise so generously to study and assess the Annual Prize entries.
Songs by all three prize winners were performed by Mary Bevan and James Gilchrist in a **concert** which the Foundation put on in St Paul’s Church in Knightsbridge in November 2024, alongside a selection of Tranchell’s own songs. The evening was well attended and provided an excellent opportunity for musicians, scholars, supporters and the general public to learn more about Tranchell’s music and life and to network.
Following discussions between the Judging Panel and Trustees, the topic chosen for the 2025-2026 Prize is a duet for piano and organ. The winning entry will be performed at a concert in April 2026 which will also feature a revival of Tranchell’s operetta Twice a Kiss.

Section D Achievements and erformance p
In addition to the Composition Prize and the related concert in November, the Foundation has made a start this year on promoting **commercial recordings** of Tranchell’s music as a way of getting his work better known and more widely heard. A contribution was offered to the Imperial College Chamber Choir towards the costs of producing a CD (and associated streaming options) in the summer of 2025 with a programme to include one or more Tranchell work for chorus. The Foundation’s website makes clear that the Trustees welcome requests from performers and record producers for support for the inclusion of Tranchell compositions in commercial recording projects (and that we welcome requests for any support required to allow the inclusion of Tranchell compositions in public concerts). Meanwhile, the Foundation is planning to fund a commercial recording of the Tranchell operetta Twice a Kiss, using recordings of the rehearsals and concert in April 2026.
In previous Reports we have referred to the Foundation’s programme of **typesetting and publishing** Tranchell’s music. It remains our aim to ensure that all significant compositions are made available to the public free of charge in typeset form. ## **Fund Raising and Stewardship**
The Foundation’s finances remain robust. We continue to succeed in our aim of carrying forward a significant balance of the funds raised in the 2022 Centenary Appeal to support future activities for which fundraising may be challenging. And our income from subscribers to the Composition Prize remains buoyant at around £4,600 per annum (including GiftAid).

We refer in the preceding section to a concert performance and recording of Twice a Kiss in April 2026. Toward the end of 2024-25 we launched a targeted funding exercise to raise extra money to allow us to recruit a world-class cast for this and pay for a professional standard master tape for a commercial recording. Commitments were quickly secured to provide the extra £7,000 needed for these additional activities.

## **Section E Financial review**
**Brief statement of the charity’s policy on reserves**
Policy:
The Foundation’s policy is to hold £500 in reserve to cover unforeseen commitments.
Explanation:
The Foundation is run entirely by volunteers working in their own homes with their own equipment. The Foundation has used its charitable status to set up free banking and web services. It employs no staff, owns no property or equipment, and has no forward financial commitments for any of these. There are therefore no liabilities other than those arising directly from planned programmes of work to deliver the Foundation’s charitable objectives. Programme commitments are strictly managed to be within programme budgets, and programme budgets are set so that collectively they never exceed the Foundation’s available cash on account. The reserve held is therefore for genuinely unforeseen commitments, and the level of £500 reflects that.
The Foundation planned to end the year of this report with significant cash on account. This is because:
- Having assessed the availability of volunteers and professionals charging affordable fees who have the skills required to undertake the work required to achieve the Foundation’s objectives, the Foundation has calculated that it will take a number of years to deliver some of the work that is key to its Objects (such as producing typeset editions of all the major compositions).
- The 2022 Centenary Appeal was highly successful, and the 2023 appeal for annual subscriptions to support the ongoing Composition Prize also got a good response. But discussions with donors and other supporters indicate that fundraising will become more challenging and will need to identify specific projects that interest donors. So the Foundation is actively stewarding the funds remaining from the 2022 Appeal (which made clear it was for unrestricted funds) to support future work in important programme areas which it expects to be difficult to raise further funds for.
