Trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit. The main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to the Foundation’s objects are promoting and sharing research, scholarship and performance to add to the collective awareness, knowledge and appreciation of the music of Peter Tranchell. The Foundation makes its educational materials and activities available to the public through the Foundation’s website, social media, awareness raising with relevant groups of musicians and professional societies, and public performances. Section D Achievements and performance
## **Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year**
2023-24 was the third year of the Foundation’s operation as a Registered Charity. Our main achievements in this year have been:
- to ensure the Foundation is **well governed**
- to build on achievements of our first two years – in particular the PAT Centenary in 2022 - to develop strategies and programmes to continue to **promote our objects**
- to ensure good **stewardship** of existing funds and continue to **raise further funds** to support ongoing activities
## **Governance**
At the start of this year, we confirmed the appointment of two Trustees designate - John Sunderland and Jonathan Wikeley – who had both been involved with the Foundation for some time and who bring a wealth of experience in music, publishing, composition. performance, finance, business and governance.
Trustees had two formal meeting – both by videoconference - in 2023-24, supplemented by occasional written resolutions (by email) and frequent email and videoconference discussions between CH, JG and CF to discuss operational matters and prepare for strategic discussions at Trustees’ meetings.
## **Achieving our Objectives**
As reported last year, our activities in the 2022 included running a Peter Tranchell Centenary Composition Competition for Organ. We received feedback from a range of respected sources that this had been successful in raising awareness of Peter Tranchell (PAT) and his life and work as a composer whilst also stimulating and supporting contemporary composers and raising the profile of the Foundation. As a result, Trustees agreed to institute an ongoing Annual Peter Tranchell Composition Prize, starting in 2023-24.
The focus of the 2023 Competition was an Advent Carol. We were delighted to be able to refer 13 entries to a distinguished Judging Panel of composers and performers chaired (as in 2022) by David Hill. The prize of £500 awarded to _Cantemus in Omni Die_ by Dónal McCann, with _Lift up Your Heads_ by Liam Condon also being highly commended. The winning entry was premiered at an Advent Carol Service at New College in Oxford, included in services at All Saints Fulham and other venues, and performed and subsequently broadcast on Radio 3 by the BBC - Singers at a concert in The Temple Church in London. At the end of 2023-24 we announced that the topic for the 2024 Prize would be Tranchell’s Lost Songs, with entrants invited to submit two or more songs with total duration of up to 10 minutes, using titles of PAT - songs for which the music has been lost. Section D Achievements and erformance p
The Annual Prize will form a key part of the Foundation’s activities over the next few years. We plan to promote concerts of winning entries and related works in years when this is appropriate and funds allow. The first of these concerts will take place in November 2024 to showcase winning entries in the 2024 Prize along with a selection of PAT songs.
In addition, Trustees will continue to look for other ways of promoting public awareness and understanding of PAT’s life and works, including concert performances and/or recordings of further works. **The Trustees welcome suggestion for PAT performances and/or recordings from performers and scholars.**
In previous Reports we have referred to the Foundation’s programme of typesetting and publishing PAT’s music. It remains our aim to ensure that all significant compositions are made available to the public free of charge in typeset form. We are pleased to announce that the following works have been added this year to those already available on the Foundation’s website:

## **Fund Raising and Stewardship**
In earlier Reports we gave details of the Centenary Appeal which succeeded in raising a total of £31,822 (including Gift Aid). Much of this was used to support the Foundation’s programme of activities in the Centenary Year, but the intention was to steward some of these funds for future work on typesetting and publishing, and promoting further performances and recordings of PAT works. The Foundation started the 2023-24 year with available reserves of £14,954 (the formal accounts show £17,954, but this includes £3,000 held over for payment for work commissioned in 2022-23).
To maximise the proportion of remaining funds available for future typesetting, performance and recordings, the Foundation appealed to supporters and the wider public in 2023 for recurring donations over the coming years to help support the Annual Prize. We are delighted that as a result, we received an income from donations and associated Gift Aid of £4,200 in 2023-24, with commitments for comparable sums over the next few years. This should allow us to support the Prize and associated

## **Section E Financial review**
Policy: **Brief statement of the charity’s policy on reserves** The Foundation’s policy is to hold £500 in reserve to cover unforeseen commitments.
Explanation:
The Foundation is run entirely by volunteers working in their own homes with their own equipment. The Foundation has used its charitable status to set up free banking and web services. It employs no staff, owns no property or equipment, and has no forward financial commitments for any of these. There are therefore no liabilities other than those arising directly from planned programmes of work to deliver the Foundation’s charitable objectives. Programme commitments are strictly managed to be within programme budgets, and programme budgets are set so that collectively they never exceed the Foundation’s available cash on account. The reserve held is therefore for genuinely unforeseen commitments, and the level of £500 reflects that.
The Foundation planned to end the year of this report with significant cash on account. This is because:
- Having assessed the availability of volunteers and professionals charging affordable fees who have the skills required to undertake the work required to achieve the Foundation’s objectives, the Foundation has calculated that it will take a number of years to deliver some of the work that is key to its Objects (such as producing typeset editions of all the major compositions).
- The 2022 Centenary Appeal was highly successful, and the 2023 appeal for annual subscriptions to support the ongoing Composition Prize also got a good response. But discussions with donors and other supporters indicate that further fundraising will be considerably more challenging and will need to identify specific projects that interest donors. So the Foundation is actively stewarding the funds remaining from the 2022 Appeal (which made clear it was for unrestricted funds) to support future work in important programme areas which it expects to be difficult to raise further funds for.
