Trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit. The main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to the Foundation’s objects are promoting and sharing research, scholarship and performance to add to the collective awareness, knowledge and appreciation of the music of Peter Tranchell. The Foundation makes its educational materials and activities available to the public through the Foundation’s website, social media, awareness raising with relevant groups of musicians and professional societies, and public performances. ## **Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year**
2022-23 was the second year of the Foundation’s operations. Our main achievements in this year have been:
- to build on the systems we put in place in 2021-22 for **governance**
- to continue our work on **fund raising**
- to continue to promote and fund work to **achieve our objectives**
2022 was the centenary of Peter Tranchell’s birth. Most of our work in 2022-23 was focussed on using the centenary to promote interest and awareness of his life, work and music, building on the foundations we laid for this is 2021-22.
## **Governance**
We started the year with six Trustees who between them brought a wide range of expertise from music, publishing, broadcasting and business operations. During the year, three Trustees (PM, HN and MP) resigned: PM at the end of his appointed term, and HN and MP due to unanticipated demands from their paid employment. All have agreed to continue to offer advice to the Foundation on an _ad hoc_ basis and we are extremely grateful to them for the time and wise counsel that they have already given during their terms as Trustees. We finished the year with three active Trustees and two Trustees designate who had agreed to take up office at the start of 2023-24 – John Sunderland and Jonathan Wikeley. They bring a wealth of experience in music, publishing, composition. performance, finance, business and governance, and the Foundation looks forward to their active involvement.
Trustees had four formal meeting by videoconference in 2022-23, supplemented by occasional written resolutions (by email) and frequent email and videoconference discussions between CH, JG and CF to discuss operational matters and prepare for strategic discussions at Trustees’ meetings.
## **Fund raising**
In our 2021-22 report we explained that the Foundation had launched a Centenary Appeal and that £19,890 had been raised by 4[th] April 2022. A further £11,932 was received in 2022-23, bringing the total funds raised through the appeal to £31,822 (including Gift Aid).
The Foundation would like to record its thanks here to Maša Amatt and her team in the Development Office of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge who provided invaluable help with bringing the Foundation and the appeal to the attention of all Caians who might have known or been taught by Peter Tranchell. We would also like to record our thanks to the many donors who have given so generously and allowed us to exceed our initial target. The funds raised will allow the Foundation to pursue it objectives in future years, as well as supporting the work in the Centenary year.
## **Achieving our Objectives**
In 2022-23 our main achievements in pursuing our objectives have been:
• **Ongoing promotion of Tranchell’s life and work and compositions** through frequent posts and updates on the website, Facebook group, Twitter accounts and ad hoc emails to, and

discussions with, potentially interested composers, performers, critics, scholars and others.
- **Continuing the Foundation’s programme of typesetting and publication (on open access) of all Tranchell’s major musical compositions** and other works likely to be of interest to musical scholars, performers and the public. Editions completed and published for open access on the Foundation’s website during 2022-23 were:

- **Composition Competition** for a new work for organ, inspired by and in memory of Peter Tranchell’s own organ compositions. A Judging Panel awarded the following prizes: `o` 1st: ‘Five Portraits of Peter’, by Sarah Cattley - awarded £500 and a world première performance by Kevin Bowyer in the PAT100 Soirée at St. Paul’s, Knightsbridge, on 26 November 2022 (see below).
- 2nd: ‘Partita Petrus’, by Robert Fielding - awarded £250 and a world première performance by Kevin Bowyer in the PAT100 Soirée at St. Paul’s, Knightsbridge, on 26 November 2022.
- 3rd: ‘Petrus Fantasy’, by Adrian Lucas - awarded £100.
- `o` A special commendation to ‘Petrus Petras’, by Samuel Kemp - awarded £50.
- The remaining four short-listed entries were also highly commended and felt to be worthy of consideration for publication and/or recording.
All shortlisted works were published and are available on the Foundation’s website, with the permission of the composers. Feedback from the composers, the judges, the audience at the PAT100 Soirée and many others made clear that the competition was highly successful in raising awareness of Peter Tranchell and his work as a composer, raising awareness of the Foundation and its work, and stimulating and rewarding contemporary composers.

The Foundation would like to record its thanks here to the members of the Judging Panel (all eminent performers and/or composers) and to all those who submitted entries.
• **Commission for a new choral work** , in memory of and inspired by Peter Tranchell’s work as a composer. Following discussions with a number of leading figures in the musical world, the Foundation approached the composer Cheryl Frances-Hoad (who had studied at Gonville and Caius College Cambridge – though after Tranchell’s time there) and was delighted when she agreed to accept this commission. Her composition _The Peace of God_ was premiered, and very well received, at the PAT100 Soirée by Gonville and Caius College Choir and Consort, conducted by Matthew Martin with the composer present. As with the Composition Competition, we received consistent feedback that the commission was highly successful in raising awareness of Peter Tranchell and his work as a composer, raising awareness of the Foundation and its work, and linking us to the world of contemporary music. The Foundation would like to record its thanks here to Cheryl Frances-Hoad, Matthew Martin and the Choir and Consort of Gonville and Caius College, and all those who kindly advised on the commission.
- **PAT100 Soirée** at St Paul’s Knightsbridge on 26[th] November 2022. This was the culmination of the Foundation’s programme of work for the Centenary. The programme included organ, piano and choral works by Peter Tranchell, together with the commissioned piece from Cheryl Frances-Hoad and the first and second prize winning entries in the composition competition for organ. Full details of the programme and performers, and links to relevant scores and recordings are available on the Foundation’s website. Despite a rail strike, the Soirée was attended by over 100 people comprising a mix of those who had known Tranchell at Caius as colleagues or pupils, and those new to his work. Feedback indicated that the event was much enjoyed and succeeded in reminding those who knew him of the importance of Tranchell’s work and influence, and introducing others to his life and music. The Foundation would like to record its thanks here to all the performers involved: Matthew Martin and the Caius College Choir and Consort, Kevin Bowyer and Norman Harper (organ), James Thomas (piano) and Jonna Wikeley and members of the choir of All Saints Church, Fulham. The Foundation would also like to thank Father Alan Gyle and his team at St Paul’s Knightsbridge for so generously allowing and helping us to use their beautiful church.
- **Centenary Networking Reception,** immediately following the PAT100 Soirée at St Paul’s Knightsbridge on 26[th] November 2022. This allowed those who knew Peter Tranchell and were already familiar with his music to network with one another and with those less familiar with his work and life. As with the Soirée, the Foundation received very positive feedback from all attending, with many requests for further events of this kind in the future. The costs of the reception were covered by the sale of tickets. The Foundation would like to record its thanks here to Aimee Walton and to students from Gonville and Caius College Cambridge who kindly agreed to act as paid event manager/assistants.

Overall, in 2022-23 the Foundation has built on the preparatory work done is 2021-22 to use the 2022 Centenary of Peter Tranchell’s birth to further the Foundation’s objectives and raise awareness of the Foundation and of Perter Tranchell’s life, work and influence. In 2023-24, the Foundation will build further on this by developing sustainable ongoing programmes and ad hoc events to take advantage of opportunities as they arise or can be created.

## **Section E Financial review**
Policy: **Brief statement of the charity’s policy on reserves** The Foundation’s policy is to hold £500 in reserve to cover unforeseen commitments. Explanation:
The Foundation is run entirely by volunteers working in their own homes with their own equipment. The Foundation has used its charitable status to set up free banking and web services. It employs no staff, owns no property or equipment, and has no forward financial commitments for any of these. There are therefore no liabilities other than those arising directly from planned programmes of work to deliver the Foundation’s charitable objectives. Programme commitments are strictly managed to be within programme budgets, and programme budgets are set so that collectively they never exceed the Foundation’s available cash on account. The reserve held is therefore for genuinely unforeseen commitments, and the level of £500 reflects that.
The Foundation planned to end the year of this report with significant cash on account, and expects to end the next year in the same way. This is because:
- Having assessed the availability of volunteers and professionals charging affordable fees who have the skills required to undertake the work required to achieve the Foundation’s objectives, the Foundation has calculated that it will take a number of years to deliver some of the work that is key to its Objects (such as producing typeset editions of all the major compositions).
- The 2022 Centenary Appeal was highly successful but discussions with donors and potential donors indicate that further fundraising will be considerably more challenging, and will need to focus on specific areas that can be made to interest donors. So the Foundation plans to use some of the funds raised in the 2022 Appeal (which was for unrestricted funds) to support future work in programme areas in which it will be difficult to raise further funds.
