To relieve poverty among parents and families of babies and young children in Southampton and the surrounding area of Hampshire, England, in particular but not exclusively by providing donated children’s clothes and basic essential items.

ABOUT US
We are a non-profit organisation started by a couple of local mums during the pandemic of 2020. The creation of Baby Necessities came from a motivation to help alleviate child poverty after watching a documentary on the growing need for baby banks in the UK.
Our vision was to support families during hardship, as well as see the baby items our children no longer needed, re-used to protect the environment and reduce unnecessary waste.
What we do
We collect good quality, pre-loved items such as clothes, toys and equipment, and distribute them to families in need across Southampton and surrounding areas.
Who we help
Access to Baby Necessities is via third-party referral by professionals such as community midwives, health visitors, GP’s, family support workers, social workers, educator or teacher, food bank volunteer, religious leaders etc.

Aims - to be a force for change by
1) Helping to give children the best start in life and relieving financial pressure on their families through the provision of essential items such as clothing, equipment, toys and other essentials;
2) Protecting the environment by recycling of pre-loved items which reduces items going to landfill;
3) Reducing the pressure on NHS and social care services by working in partnership to provide necessities to the families they support.

Volunteers
Our achievements this year wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our incredible volunteers. We have a dedicated core team of 20 volunteers who regularly help in our warehouse, along with an additional 5 volunteers who assist on an ad-hoc basis with washing. Not forgetting our corporate teams who volunteer as a one-off. Together, they contributed an impressive 818 hours of their time during the reporting period.
We were also thrilled to have our volunteer team nominated for Team of the Year at the Test Valley Charity Awards. Although we didn’t win, we’re incredibly proud to have had our amazing volunteers recognised and shortlisted for this honor. They truly are the heart of our charity!

Welcome from our Operations Manager
Hello everyone,
As the Operations Manager of Baby Necessities, I'm thrilled to share with you our latest annual report and accounts. Over the past year, our impact has grown significantly, with a 95% increase in referrals since 2022. It has been a challenging year with the on-going cost-of-living crisis, but we've had some incredible achievements along the way. It's been an exciting journey, and I couldn't be more proud of what we've accomplished together.
We hosted our first ever big charity event, the Summer Dinner Dance, which saw an incredible amount of support and fundraising. And set up a monthly baby self-weighing clinic after noticing a gap and a need for it in our local community. We received an invitation to Westminster Abbey, and hosted a free family fun day that saw over 150 attendees. Our team, volunteers, and supporters have all played a crucial role in making a difference for the families we serve, and I'm truly grateful for their dedication and hard work.
As we step into 2024, we've already seen a significant surge in referrals, now supporting around 100 families each month. Our two-storey premises is bursting at the seams with generous pre-loved donations, and we're quickly outgrowing the space. Looking ahead, we're excited about the prospect of moving into a larger unit, which will allow us to meet even more requests and support even more families in need. I'm filled with optimism about the positive impact we can continue to make in our community.

FUNDRAISING AND EVENTS
Pink and Green Campaign
On June 16th, as part of our #pinkandgreenletsbeseen campaign, Hiltingbury Infant School, Hiltingbury Junior School, and Little 1 Nursery all joined in on our annual fundraiser. Little 1 Nursery got creative with pink and green-themed activities, while the schools opted for a non-uniform day in our campaign colors. Together, they collected a fantastic amount of toiletries and raised over £300!
Mayor’s Picnic
On July 2nd, we had a fantastic time setting up our stall at the annual Mayor’s Picnic. We sold sweet cones, ran a lively tombola, and, of course, featured our ever-popular hook the duck game. A huge thank you to everyone who donated prizes for the tombola and to all who came out to support us on the day. Your generosity and enthusiasm helped us raise an amazing £330, which will go a long way in supporting our work.
International Women’s Day
A big thank you to Gosport Police Station for selecting us as their charity to fundraise for on International Women’s Day. We had the opportunity to set up a stall at the Hampshire Constabulary event, where they organised a raffle with all proceeds going to Baby Necessities. Thanks to their efforts and the generosity of everyone who purchased tickets, they raised an incredible £270. We’re so grateful for their support and the positive impact this will have on the families we serve. Thank you to everyone involved!
SUMMER DINNER DANCE
On Friday, July 14th, we hosted our first major charity event—the Summer Dinner Dance—and what a night it was!
The evening was nothing short of spectacular as we gathered at the beautiful Kimbridge Barn for an unforgettable celebration. Guests enjoyed a delicious three-course meal, danced to the beats of our fantastic DJ, and were captivated by live performances from a talented singer and a magician. The night was filled with excitement as we also held a thrilling live auction and raffle.
We came together to celebrate our amazing charity, honoring our founders, dedicated staff, passionate trustees, and hardworking volunteers, along with all the incredible achievements we've accomplished together. And thanks to your incredible generosity, we raised an astounding £3,800!
Highlight of the Night: An unforgettable auction prize!
The live auction offered an extraordinary private dining experience for 10 at the exquisite Lime Wood Hotel. Guests vied for this backstage dining adventure hosted by renowned chefs Angela Hartnett and Luke Holder, featuring four courses of mouthwatering cuisine. It was truly the ultimate dining experience up for grabs! A HUGE thank you to the incredible chefs at Lime Wood Hotel for donating this fabulous prize.

WALK THE TEST WAY
This year, Baby Necessities joined the Romsey Rotary Club for a third year, at their annual fundraiser ‘Walk the Test Way’. On the 24th September 2023 the team walked 5 miles and managed to raise £694.
Each year the event draws interest from many groups (scouts, schools, companies) as well as smaller groups, families and individuals who fundraise for their favourite charities, whilst walking the beautiful Test Way. This year’s wonderful team consisted of 5 adults, 5 children, a baby and a dog!
FAMILY FUN DAY
In October half term we held our first FREE family fun day event.
We had an enchanting day filled with joy and laughter as we welcomed Mrs. Miles Magic for some fabulous face painting—all free for our families, of course! The excitement continued with Imaginacts Entertainment Ltd, who brought Spiderman and Elsa for an unforgettable meet and greet.
Our fun-filled event featured:

· Interactive story time
- Delicious drinks and baked goods
Offering a free family day like this was essential to help local families reduce the cost burden of entertaining their children during half term. And what a success it was, with 150 attendees joining in on the fun!
CHRISTMAS GIVING TREE
This year marked the launch of our first-ever Giving Tree fundraiser, and it was a huge success!
Two schools participated by decorating their Christmas trees with tags, each listing an essential item for students and families to purchase. The response was incredible—we received a wide variety of brand-new essentials, including nappies, toiletries, pajamas, socks, shoes, toys, and more!
We want to extend a massive thank you to Sherborne House and Stroud School for their generous contributions. The gifts collected through their Giving Tree initiative will make a real difference to the families we support, helping to spread joy and provide much-needed items during the festive season. Your kindness is truly appreciated!
WESTMINSTER ABBEY
This year, we were honored to receive a very special invitation for one of our team members at Baby Necessities to attend the "Together at Christmas" Carol Concert at Westminster Abbey, hosted by HRH The Princess of Wales, in support of the Shaping Us campaign. It was truly a regal and memorable experience for our charity.
Being invited to the "Together at Christmas" Carol Concert is an incredible honor for a small charity like Baby Necessities. This experience not only highlights the growing recognition of our work but also provides a platform to raise awareness of the vital services we offer. For a grassroots organisation, it’s a moment of validation—showing that the impact we’re making in our community is being noticed on a much larger scale.
Such an opportunity allows us to connect with a wider audience and potential supporters, while also reinforcing the importance of the work we do for the families and children we support. It's a reminder that even small charities can play a big role in shaping lives, and being part of a prestigious event like this brings a deep sense of pride and encouragement to our entire team. It’s an experience that reaffirms why we do what we do and motivates us to keep pushing forward!
GIVE A GIFT
Our Give a Gift service has had another remarkable year, continuing to provide brand new birthday presents, banners, cards, and cakes to children who might otherwise go without on their special day. In 2023, we were able to support 32 children through this service, with a generous total of £2,164 worth of brand new gifts purchased and donated by our amazing supporters.
This service is so much more than just presents—it ensures these children experience the joy and celebration they deserve on their birthdays, making their day truly special. We’re incredibly grateful for the generosity of everyone who helps make this happen!

BABY SELF-WEIGHING CLINIC
Exciting New Service at Baby Necessities HQ!
In March, we proudly launched our Baby Self-Weighing Clinic right here at Baby Necessities HQ. On the first Thursday of each month, parents and carers can bring their babies to be weighed in a warm, friendly, and non-judgmental environment. Our clinic features:
· Calibrated scales for accurate baby weighing · Comfortable changing facilities
· Fun toys to keep little ones entertained · A welcoming face to greet everyone from the local area
This service was established in response to a noticeable decline in weighing clinics postCOVID. At Baby Necessities, we saw the gap and knew we had to step in to meet this essential need for our community. This service has been used 67 times since its launch, by a mix of regular attendees and one-offs.
This is a self-weighing clinic, and a health visitor is not present. If you have any concerns about your baby's health, we encourage you to reach out to your health visiting team.

TRUSTEES’ REPORT
The trustees are responsible for preparing the trustees’ annual report and the financial statements in accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards.
Charity law requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity and of the incoming resources and application of resources, including income and expenditure, of the charity for that period. The trustees are responsible for keeping accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy the financial position of the charity and enable them to ascertain to ensure that the financial statements comply with Charities Act 2011. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.

STATEMENT OF PUBLIC BENEFIT
Our service benefits children of families who, for reasons including low or loss of income, domestic violence or even the age of the parents, do not have access to the basic essentials that every child deserves. We provide bundles to our referral partners, being health visitor/midwifery teams, social workers, community leaders and other charities, in and around Southampton. In providing our services we benefit the public in the following ways:

Families: Providing the essentials helps to ensure that infants and young children have a safe place to sleep, are clean and are suitably clothed. We assist in relieving both the financial pressure and emotional stress of families facing hardship.

Referral Partners: Healthcare professionals and other family support workers now have a service within the local community that they can use when a family that they are working with are in need of basic and essential supplies. Such a service did not exist in the local area prior to Baby Necessities being founded. Wider Community: We offer a volunteering opportunity where members of the community can learn new skills and meet new people. We also encourage local businesses to give back to their community by partnering with us in volunteering their time and resources.

Environment: Through the redistribution of second hand items we are reducing unnecessary waste. The general public can donate their pre-used baby and infant items which will go to helping families in need, whilst also having a positive impact on the environment. Our services cover big-ticket items such as prams and cots as well as clothing, contributing in no small way to our local circular economy.
Under Section 17 of the Charities Act 2011, the Trustees have given serious consideration to the Charity Commission’s general guidance on public benefit when planning the charity’s activities and in particular to the relief and prevention of poverty in children.
METHODS USED TO RECRUIT AND APPOINT NEW TRUSTEES
New Trustees are recruited by the board in line with Baby Necessities’ Trustee Recruitment Policy. Positions are advertised across our social media channels, on our website and using platforms such as Reach Volunteering. Initial interviews take place with a trustee and a senior member of staff, and interview feedback is provided to the rest of the board for consideration. If successful, at this point a trustee may be invited to attend a board meeting as a guest, or to attend a volunteering session at Baby Necessities to assess mutual fit. Where a candidate is still interested in joining the board of trustees, the existing board will then take a vote.
Prior to appointment, Trustees are DBS checked and are required to sign our Trustee Declaration. Newly appointed Trustees receive a formal induction which outlines the work of the charity and includes a set of key documents (such as policies and the constitution) to give them the tools required to fulfil their role.
Where a skills gap is identified on the board, we actively seek Trustees suitable to fill this gap by advertising for the specific skillset.

FUTURE PLANS
Baby Necessities will continue to provide the baby bank services that are so essential to our community, whilst continuing to meet the increasing numbers of referrals we are receiving for our services. We plan to meet these demands by appraising our use of space in our current premises and sourcing additional storage where necessary, recruiting new members of staff into fundraising and marketing roles, and increasing our number of volunteer sessions for washing and preparing baby/child bundles for distribution. Donation levels of second hand clothes and other goods from the general public remain strong, and finding adequate storage facilities is a priority for the charity.
We will be turning our attention to our relationships with local businesses and corporates, and have plans to implement a marketing strategy aimed at building these relationships in a sustainable way. We are also developing a corporate sponsorship offering, with different levels of support on offer depending on how businesses wish to partner with us. More on this to come.
We also plan to further our impact in the local community by expanding our outreach programme, including attending schools, care homes and children’s groups to give talks about our services and to raise awareness of the issues we were set up to deal with.
FINANCIAL REVIEW AND RESERVES POLICY
Baby Necessities has had a successful third year, generating an income of £131,749 (2022: £69,795) which is a combination of restricted and unrestricted funds via grants, donations and fundraising activities. Our total expenditure for the year was £108,313 (2022: £66,985) resulting in an overall surplus of £23,436 (2022: surplus £2,810). At the end of the financial year our reserves were £45,605 which includes restricted funds totalling £18,439 across several funding providers including the National Lottery, B&Q, Hendy, Postcode Lottery and more. A portion of the grants received restrict the funds for particular expenses including premises, salaries and specified types of equipment (e.g. cots) and it is these funds which are declared as ‘restricted’ in our accounts.
Donations-in-kind are not reflected in the income or expenditure within our financial statements but represent a significant additional donation stream and source of sustainability. Brand new items (from our Amazon wish list or handed in on donation mornings) are valued using the recommended retail price (RRP) when they are received. The charity received approximately £9,686 worth of donated brand-new items in 2023 (2022: £5,493).
The Trustees agree that the charity should maintain unrestricted funds at a level which equates to approximately three to six months worth of running costs. This provides a buffer to cover management, administration, support costs and to respond to emergencies should income levels fall below what the charity needs to continue running. The trustees are mindful of the requirement to build up sufficient reserves, and although progress has been made the trustees recognise that it could take 3 to 5 years to build up to the target the board has set. The trustees actively review the risks which the charity faces on a regular basis and a formal reserves policy is in place.
The board acknowledges an impressive success rate in funding applications being granted and in 2023 a total of £113,306 was received in grant monies, of which £87,141 was from The National Lottery as part of a 3 year grant. The board recognises the general macro-economic uncertainty and the impact this is having on the charitable sector. The board has no current concerns about the charity’s ability to continue operating, and continuous review of the charity’s funding streams is ongoing.

PRINCIPLE RISKS AND UNCERTAINTIES
The charity maintains a risk register, covering governance, financial, operational, external and reputational, legal and compliance risk and how they are managed. This register is regularly reviewed by the board at its meetings to ensure risks are reduced as much as possible depending on severity.

INDEPENDENT EXAMINER’S REPORT TO THE TRUSTEES

I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of Baby Necessities CIO (the Charity) for the period ended 31 December 2023.
Responsibilities and basis of report
As the charity trustees of the Charity you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the Act’). I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
Independent examiner’s statement
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

1.accounting records were not kept in respect of the Trust as required by section 130 of the Act; or
-
2.the accounts do not accord with those records.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
