Trustees are usually familiar with our work or they may attend some of the workshops offered by City of Sanctuary. Supporting schools, NHS Maternity, Thirteen Housing Group to
become places of sanctuary through a sanctuary award

Providing training to school staff and students on refugee issues

Promoting community cohesion through our work with schools

Working with EAL Network to improve the inclusive practices in
schools and encourage schools to become schools of sanctuary

Contact with Ofsted to raise the issue regarding the inclusion and

Most of our concerns about the education of new arrivals have
been raised to Ofsted by The Bell Foundation in two reports.

Some are in employment and others are retired. The volunteers have various experience in areas such as education, local authorities, health and refugee organisations. We have increased the number of our members with lived experience, and we work in co-production for our strategic planning. Currently, we are focused on working with schools and how to increase the number of schools of sanctuary. There has been a considerable demographic change in some of our districts due to migration and dispersal of refugees. This has resulted in tensions in some of these communities and schools. Therefore, we are providing training in schools with a focus on understanding refugees. - policy programme related investment; - contribution made by volunteers. ## Section D Achievements and performance March **2012** **TAR** 4 ## Section D Achievements and performance **Summary of the main** We have managed to increase the number of members with lived **achievements of the charity** experience who are fundamental in deciding the direction of our work and **during the year** priorities. This has been a challenging year as there has been an increase in the negativity towards sanctuary seekers by politicians. This has not helped the already tense situation in some of our towns which had suffered during the disturbances in 2024. Divisions have occurred with racist hate crime having increased dramatically. As a result, we have had to change our focus from awards to community cohesion. We are taking opportunities to improve our skills in having ‘difficult conversations’ and to increase our networking to include various community groups. There are some major political changes proposed to the lives of sanctuary seekers. We are communicating with politicians in order to bring about a better understanding of sanctuary seekers and enable them to rethink this legislation. Understandably, there is a lot of anxiety amongst the refugee population who having fled to safety in the UK now find themselves unsafe once again. The mental health of sanctuary seekers has always been a major concern for organisations who support them. For many years we have worked towards having a centre for mental health in the Tees Valley. A specialist service for the mental health of sanctuary seekers is now established and growing, in Stockton.
