Trustees are usually familiar with our work or they may attend some of the workshops offered by City of Sanctuary. TVoS has the following policies in place: - Internal Financial Controls - Due Diligence - Conflicts of Interest - Social Media - the charity’s organisational structure and any wider network with which the charity works; - Safeguarding - relationship with any related parties; - trustees’ consideration of major risks and the system and procedures to manage them. ## **Section C Objectives and activities** TVoS is part of the bigger City of Sanctuary movement which follows these objects: **Summary of the objects of the charity set out in its governing document** Encouraging towns, areas, places, organisations and institutions to become welcome and safe, through the provision of information, advice and support; Advancing the education and training of people who are refugees or asylum seekers; Liaising with other private, voluntary and statutory organisations on relevant issues Promoting activities to foster understanding between the general public, refugees and asylum seekers March **2012** **TAR** 2 - Activities undertaken:  Supporting schools, colleges and local theatre to become places of sanctuary - Providing training to school staff and students on refugee issues  Promoting community cohesion through our work with schools and colleges - Working with EAL support to improve the inclusive practices in schools - Developing an EAL support group in Darlington  Attending training/meetings by Refugee Education and The Bell Foundation on Meeting the Needs of New Arrivals to Years 10 and 11 - Contact with Ofsted to raise the issue regarding the inclusion and - **Summary of the main** attainment of asylum seekers and refugees. Some are in employment and others are retired. The volunteers have various experience in areas such as education, local authorities, health and refugee organisations. We do have some with lived experience but this needs to increase. You **may choose** to include further statements, where relevant, about: - policy on grantmaking; - policy programme related investment; - contribution made by volunteers. Section D Achievements and performance March **2012** **TAR** 4 ## Section D Achievements and performance A school and two colleges have achieved the sanctuary award, this year **Summary of the main** with four ongoing applications which include Teesside University. **achievements of the charity** Much of the wok of TVoS was towards developing inclusive practices in **during the year** schools which have an intake of refugee and asylum-seeking children. There are no Ofsted criteria for provision and attainment for this group. The quality of provision varies in schools. TVoS has contacted Ofsted regarding this issue and is awaiting a response from the Senior Regional Inspector. The local authorities in the Tees Valley continue to be supportive and welcoming towards sanctuary seekers. With the joint action of Asylum Matters and TVoS, Middlesbrough passed a motion at a council meeting to state that refugees were welcome. Work towards developing a specialist mental health facility in the Tees Valley continues.
