## **STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT** 

**Governing Document:** Better Way Recovery is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation governed by a Constitution. 

**Trustee selection methods:** Apart from the founding Trustees, each Trustee is appointed for a period of 3 years.  New Trustees must have regard to the skills, knowledge and experience needed for the effective administration of the charity. 

**Other Trustee information:** The charity has a Trustee Code of Conduct and Trustee Indemnity Insurance. 

## **OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES** 

## **Objects of the Charity:** 

- a) the development of a safe community space for service users to access information and services. 

- b) the provision of mentoring and peer to peer support. 

- c) providing services in collaboration with local community organisations which are concerned with the rehabilitation of those suffering from addiction. 

- d) raising awareness of the public on the effects of drug and alcohol addiction. 

## **Main activities undertaken during the period for public benefit:** 

- a) in carrying out these activities, the Trustees have had due regard to the relevant public benefit guidance. 

- b) providing a place of safety for service users. 

- c) facilitating 11 lived experience support groups per week in Lichfield and 5 in Tamworth. 

- d) offering a drop-in service 6 days per week in Lichfield and 4 days per week in Tamworth. 

- e) delivering outreach work in the community alongside other agencies. 

- f) delivering drug awareness talks in schools and community groups.

- g) working with local drugs and alcohol services to provide an effective service to recovery seekers. 

- h) holding 1 family support group per week in Lichfield. 

- i) providing 5 days per week telephone support to recovery seekers. 

j) increased multi-agency working with all key agencies, including police, probation, mental health, job centres and local councils. 

## **Achievements during the period:** 

a) held an annual sleepout and fun day for a 4th year. 

b) secured 3 years funding from National Lottery Community Fund for staffing and running costs. 

c) delivered drug awareness talks in 7 local schools. 

d) there were 306  self-referrals to the service. 

e) secured a 2nd year of funding for the Homeless Hub funded by Tamworth Council. 

f) Support Staffordshire 10 year anniversary awards achieved Governance Great Award. 

g) received a nomination for King's Award for Voluntary Services. 

h) commenced a 12 week structured abstinence based programme. 

i) became part of Staffordshire Partnership for Drugs and Alcohol Services. 

j) Staffordshire Treatment and Recovery Service (STARS) key worker id based in Lichfield for 4 

days per week. 

k) secured a further year of funding from Lichfield Locality Deal fund and Public Health 

to  employ recovery co-ordinators for 3 days per week. 

l) built relationships with rehabilitation centres in Nottingham and Derby. 

m) a former recovery seeker was employed  and 5 former recovery seekers became volunteers. 

## **Financial Review:** 

Total income for the year was £156,522, of which £42,075 was funding from 

The National Lottery Community Fund RC Midlands Region Project ID 20207064, and £101,929  from other grant funders. 

Total expenditure was £165,054 of which £161,966 related to restricted funds and £3,088 to general unrestricted funds. 

Funds caried forward were £50,854 of which £11,915 were restricted. 

## **Reserves Policy** 

The Trustees consider that reserves of at least 6 months operational expenditure should be held in order to cover future unforeseen expenditure or a shortfall in future income. The Trustees will continue to review the level of reserves 

in line with this policy as the work continues to develop.

**REPORT OF THE INDEPENDENT EXAMINER ON THE ACCOUNTS OF BETTER WAY RECOVERY for the year ending 31 October 2024** 

I report to the members on my examination of the accounts of Better Way Recovery (the Organisation) for the year ending 31 October 2024. 

The Trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”). 

I report in respect of my examination of the charity’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act. 

I have completed my examination.  I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination which gives me cause to believe that, in any for the period 1 October 2022 to 31 October 2023 material respect: 

the accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; or the accounts do not accord with the accounting records; or 

the accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair’ view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination. 

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

## **1.1 Basis of Preparation of Accounts** 

These accounts have been prepared under the historical cost convention with items recognised at cost or transaction value unless otherwise stated in the relevant notes to these accounts. 

The accounts have been prepared in accordance with: 

the Statement of Recommended Practice: Accounting and Reporting by Charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) issued in October 2019, and with FRS 102 - The Financial Reporting Standard Applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland January 2022, and with the Charities Act 2011. 

## **1.2 Going Concern Basis** 

There are no material uncertainties related to events or conditions that cast significant doubt on the organisation’s ability to continue as a going concern. 

## **2.1 Recognition of income** 

Income is included in the Statement of Financial Activities (SoFA) when: the charity becomes entitled to the resources; 

and when it is probable that the economic benefits will flow to the charity; and the monetary value can be measured with sufficient reliability. 

## **3.1 Recognition of liabilities and expenditure** 

Liabilities are recognised where it is more likely than not that there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the organisation to pay out resources; and when it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement; 

and the amount of the obligation can be measured with reasonable certainty. 

## **3.2 Provisions for liabilities (Accruals)** 

A liability is measured on recognition at its historical cost and then subsequently measured at the best estimate of the amount required to settle the obligation at the reporting date. 

## **4.1 Debtors** 

Debtors are measured at the cash or other consideration expected to be received. 

## **5.1 Fund Accounting** 

Unrestricted funds are available for use at the discretion of the Trustees in furtherance of the general objectives of the organisation. 

Restricted funds are funds subject to specific restrictions imposed by the donor, and are not available for other organisational purposes.

TNCLF: 20207064 funded centre costs including employment of workers and building rental. Lichfield DC Locality Deal Fund funded part-time recovery co-ordinators and marketing materials. Tamworth DC Locality Deal fund funded Tamworth centre costs including staff costs, office rental, volunteer expenses and running costs. 

Public Health funding through Humankind /MPFT STARS for an office manager, part time  recovery co-ordinators and running costs. 

Citizens' Advice Mid Mercia funded an Outreach Worker for the Homeless Hub. Support Staffordshire funded purchases of PPE. 

Sponsored events supported costs of the fun day.
