The trustees have pleasure in presenting their report and the unaudited financial statements of the charity for the period ended 31 March 2025.

Structure, Governance and Management

The church is a registered charity (No. 1193724) since 8 March 2021. Hope Vineyard Sunderland is also a Charitable Incorporated Organisation. On 31st December 2021 the charity took over the operations, assets, liabilities and reserves of Hope Church, charity number 1052181 with the operation of Hope Vineyard Sunderland commencing on 1st January 2022.

The Church is managed by the Church Council, which comprise the Minister and duly appointed or elected leaders of the Church. The Church Council appoints Holding Trustees for the purpose of holding the land and buildings of the Church who act on the directions of the Church Council. The Church Council meets at least quarterly to conduct the administrative business of the Church.

The Church Council has introduced financial controls to reduce the possibility of fraud and other irregularities. Financial information is presented at the quarterly meetings which enables the Church Council to monitor income and expenditure on a regular basis.

Money requiring investment shall be invested by the Church Council in any of the investments for the time being authorised for the Investment of Trust Funds and in accordance with such wider powers, if any, as may be lawfully adopted by the Church Council. The Church Council is responsible for the selection and transposition of investments and for obtaining professional advice.

Objectives and activities

The objects of the Church (“the Objects”) are for the benefit of the public:

Public benefit statement

The trustees have had regard to the Charity Commission guidance on their legal duty on public benefit, and are satisfied that the charity delivers public benefit, and due regard is paid to the guidance on public benefit when deciding on what new projects the charity should undertake.

Achievements and performance

On 31st December 2021 the charity took over the operations, assets, liabilities and reserves of Hope Church, charity number 1052181 with the operation of Hope Vineyard Sunderland commencing on 1st January 2022.

Total income for the period was £212,242. Week-to-week members’ donations were £173,973. This includes refunds under the gift aid scheme.

Members’ donations represented 82% of total income.

Total expenditure was £159,368.

The church has recorded a surplus of £52,874 in the current period.

Risk assessment

The Church Council has reviewed the major risks associated with the charitable activities of the Church and has taken steps to mitigate those risks.

Reserves policy

The property of the Church whatever its source shall be used for furthering the objects of the Church and no other purpose

The free reserves of the charity amount to £436,919.

Trustees responsibilities in relation to the financial statements

Law applicable to charities in England and Wales requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity at the end of the year and of the In preparing those financial statements, the trustees are required to:

The trustees are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.

INDEPENDENT EXAMINERS'S REPORT TO THE TRUSTEES OF

HOPE VINEYARD CHURCH SUNDERLAND

I report on the financial statements for the period ended 31 March 2025, which comprise the statement of financial activities, balance sheet, and the related notes.

Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner

As the charity trustees of the Trust you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the Act’).

I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.

Independent examiner's statement

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

  1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the Trust as required by section 130 of the Act; or

  2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or

the accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

3. ACCOUNTING POLICIES Basis of preparation

These unaudited financial statements have been prepared on the historical cost basis, as modified by the revaluation of certain financial assets and liabilities and investment properties measured at fair value through income of expenditure.

The unaudited financial statements are prepared in sterling, which is the functional currency of the charity. Monetary amounts in these unaudited financial statements are rounded to the nearest £.

Going concern

There are no material uncertainties regarding the charity’s ability to continue as a going concern.

Incoming resources

Donations and legacies

Collections are recognised when received by or on behalf of the church.

Planned giving receivable under Gift Aid, and the income tax recoverable on Gift Aid donations, are recognised at the same time as the gift to which they relate.

Charitable activities

Funds raised by events are accounted for gross.

Other trading activities

Sales of books, cakes and magazines from the bookshop are accounted for gross.

Income from investments

Interest and rental entitlements are accounted for as they accrue. Tax recoverable on such income is recognised in the same accounting year.

Other

Income relating to commissions received from utilities supplier.

Resources expended and liabilities

Liabilities are recognised as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to pay out resources.

Grants and donations

Grants and donations are accounted for when paid over or when awarded, if that award creates a binding obligation on the Church.

Activities directly relating to the work of the Church

The costs of activities directly related to the cost of the church are accounted for as they are incurred.

Tangible fixed assets and depreciation

These are capitalised if they can be used for more than one year, and cost at least £100. They are valued at cost or, if gifted, at the value to the charity on receipt.

Depreciation is calculated so as to write off the cost of an asset, less its estimated residual value, over the useful economic life of that asset as follows:

Stocks

Stocks are valued at the lower of cost and not realisable value.

Funds accounting

Funds held by the charity are used for:

General fund comprises those funds that the principals are free to use in accordance with the charitable objectives. Transfers to and from funds are made as designated by the trustees.

Restricted funds are funds that are to be used for specific purposes as laid down by the donor or by the specific terms of the appeal under which the funds are raised. Expenditure which meets these criteria is charged to the fund. Transfers to and from the funds are made as designated by the trustees.

Designated reserves

Designated funds are unrestricted funds earmarked by the trustees for particular purposes as follows:

Capital fund

The reserve reflects the net book value of fixed assets owned by the charity.

Financial instruments

Financial instruments are classified and accounted for, according to the substance of the contractual arrangement, as either financial assets, financial liabilities or equity instruments. An equity instrument is any contract that evidences a residual interest in the assets of the company after deducting all of its liabilities.
