The public benefit objects of the CIO, as set out in its Cons7tu7on, are: to establish and maintain a museum to educate the public on the history, evolu7on and use of plas7cs from 1850 onwards and their impact on everyday live, by archiving, preserving and exhibi7ng historic plas7cs and related items for public viewing. Further aims are to: encourage an apprecia7on of design; provide opportuni7es for lifelong learning and training; s7mulate reminiscence, nostalgia and delight; advance environmental protec7on by encouraging future awareness of plas7cs, especially in regard to ecology, conserva7on, and re-use. The CIO will achieve its charitable purposes through the presenta7on of significant museum collec7ons, with a range of further ac7vi7es including collabora7on, mentoring and events.
The collec7ons, referred to jointly as the Bakelite Museum, con7nue to be housed in accessible storage, which has enabled a con7nuous process of maintenance, repair and restora7on of the objects.
The Trust made no money during this period but fulfilled its remit by holding Open Days at the museum store and keeping up an ac7ve presence on social media.
Open Days in 2023: Bakelite in Wai7ng, Saturday and Sunday 29 and 30 April; Bakelite at Home, Sunday 28 May; Through the Keyhole, Sunday 6 August; Bakelite Obscura, 14 and 15 October. About forty people came to each, plus volunteers.
The popular Mystery Object series on Facebook was briefly resurrected in September, with a Roll a Ray billiard table smoother and 629 views, and there were regular posts and videos on Facebook throughout the year.
A workshop was held where local musicians were invited to explore and play with the collec7on as the first stage of a performance project, The Sound of Bakelite.
The search for premises con7nued in 2023 and mainly centred on Stoke-on-Trent. AYer considering and being considered for various buildings at the Spode Works, the possibility of buying the Minton Library and conversa7ons with a range of funding bodies, the Stoke op7ons came to an end in November 2023 when the Council decided the Bakelite Museum was not “a strategic fit”, because it was not centred on ceramics.
The search con7nues, despite the difficul7es caused by lack of funds.
