and the Charities Statement of Recommended Practi￿ I'charities SORP'I {applicable lo charities
preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK
and Republic of Ireland; FRS 102) issued in October 2019.
Our purposes and actlvltles
The purposes of the charty are lo make grants and charitable distributions according to the
guidelines set out in the charty's grant making policy filed wrth Companies House. The Dow Clewer
Foundation made donations totalling £256.105 in the financial period ending 30 September 2023.
93% of the funds spent were from unreStr￿ted funds. and the remaining 70h were from reslri¢led
funds. The single donation made from restricted funds {£18.6281 was to support hvo projects run
by the African Bush Camps Foundation. The primary donations from unrestricted funds totalled
£179.000. were split be￿eeft ffive Charities, with the remaining £58,478 made as smaller donation5
(under £20.000 each) to various eslablished d)arities.
The trustees have also had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public
benefit.
Achievements and perfomiance
This year, The Dow Clewer Foundation made major donations to six charities across a broad range
of sectors. Inlernationalty. they continued to support African Bush Camps Foundation, who
run prOje￿S in Zimbabwe, Zambia. and Botswana that focus on addressing challenges that include
unemployment. food scarcty, poor education 8nd.healthcare infrastructure. low school attendance
and dropouls due to finanryal constraints. wildlrfe poaching. and préserving natural resour￿$.
Wthin the Medical sector. they contributed to the British Heart Foundatron's CureHeart Prograrn.
This is one of Ihe largest and mosl ambitious research inilialives of ils kind. Its team of world-
leading scientists from the UK and USA is poised to develop the first cures for deadly inherited
heart conditions which affect over 30 million people worfdwide. These cures will use cutting-edge
gene editing technology, an area of medicine Ihal has the potential to usher in a new era of
preventing and treating disease.
Donations were made wrthin the Musi¢ and Arts sector to the English National Opera's Harewood
Art15ts Match Funding Campaign and the RoyaLOpera House. The English National Opera (ENO)
provides a beswke programme of vocal and language Iraifting. Successful applicanls are coached by
experts in their repertoire and are fully supported through auditions for career-building performance
opportunities wrth ENO. around the UK and abroad. Harewood Artists receive dramatic & movement
coaching, performance psychology, language coaching, Vocal massage, nulrition advice and
brealhwork as well as opportunities to leam from distinguished ￿tIstS and ￿adIng fuures from the
operatic world.

The Dcwi Clewer Foundatton are also ￿liVety invofved in Brass for Africa, providing advice and
guidance, as well as part￿ipatIng in fundraising challenges. Brass for Africa's mission is to support
thousands of marginalised children and young people in Sub-saharan Africa to transfom their
lives, driving social impact and social justice through Mus￿. BfA provide Music & Lifevskills
education to over 1,500 disadvantaged children and young people acTOSS Uganda. Rwanda and
Liberia every week.
Significant support was also given l(Kally lo Bracknell Cobras Basketball Club and FIDreat
Montague Park Primary School as well as many furthef charitbes Wbth smaller donations.
Financial revlew
The charty 1$ funded primarity by the Dow Clewer famity. During the period. £256,105 of total funds
were donated direclty to charitable Causes, £690 are expenses relating to the independenl
examination of the charity's annual accounts. and £256 were paid as bank charge5 and other
90vernance-related fees.
At the end of the period. the charty had £276,228 in cash to continue Its purposes and adivrties in the
following period, and only had £660 in credrtors due lo the Independent Examiner for their work on
this year's accounts.

There are no uncertainties about the charity's abilty to continue as a going concern.

Governing Document
The Dow Clewer Foundation is a company limited by guarantee govemed by its Memorandum and
Articles of Association dated 29 September 2020. It is registered as a charity with the Charity
Commission.
Oryanisation
The board of trustees normally meets monthly to discuss grant proposals. existin9 charitable
donations, and general matters of the financial management and govemance of the foundation.

Trustees. responsibilities in relation to the financial statements
The charity trustees (who are also the directors of The Dow Clewer Foundation for the purposes of
company lawl are responsible for preparing a Trustees. Annual Report and financial statements in
accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards (United Kingdom Generally
Accepted Accounting Practice). The report and accounts have been prepared in acxordance with the
provisions in thecompanies Act 20C6 relatin9 to small companDes.
Company law requires the charity trustees to prepare financial ststements for each year which give a true
and fair view of the state of affairs of the charitable company and the group and of the incoming resources
and application of resources, including the income and expenditure. of the charitable group for that period.
In preparing the financial statements, the trustees are required to-

Make juagemenis and estifhates that are reasonable and prudent;
state whether applicable UK accounting standards have been followed, subject to any material

the charity and the group and hen￿ taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detedion of fraud and

charity) for the period ended 30 September 2023
Responslbilities and basis of report
As the charity's trustees {and also its direclors for Ihe purposes of compary law) you are responsible for the
preparation of the accounts in ￿1rdance with the requirements of the Companies Act 2006 (Ihe 2006 Act'>.
Having satisfied mysew that the accounts of the ConwaAy are r￿1 required to be audited under Part 16 of Ihe
2006 Act and are eligible for independent examinat￿n. I rewrt in respect of my examination of your charity's
accounts as carried out under section 145 of the Charities Act 2011 I'the 2011 Act'l. In carrying out my
examination I have followed the Directions given by the Charty Commission under section 145151 Ib} of the
2011 Ad.

Since the Company's gross income exceeded £250,000 your examinef must be a member of a body listed in

view of the state of affairs of the company as at the end of the financial year and of its incoming

requirements of the Companies Act 2006 relating to financial statements, so far as applicable to the
company.
The members have not required the company to obtain an audit of its financial statements for the year in

Accounting Policies
The principal accounting policies adopted. Judge￿￿nts and key sources of estimation uncertainty in the
preparation of the finanaal slatements are as follows:

The financial statements have been prepared in accordance wf(h the Charities". Statement of
Recommended Practice (applicable to charities preparing Iheir accounts in accordance with the
Financial ReF)Orting Standard applicable in the UK arKI Republic of Ireland {FRS 1021) (issued in
October 2019) - {Charilies SORP {FRS 102)). the Financkgl Reporting Standard apF4icable in the UK
and Republic of Ireland (FRS 1021 and the Companies Act 2006.
The charity is a Public Benefit Entty as defined by FRS 102. The charity has taken advarrtage of the
provisions in the SORP for charilies apptying FRS 102 Update Bulletin 1 nol to prepare a Statement
of Cash Flows. The financial statements are prepared in slerfing. which is the functional currency of
the charity. Monetary amounts in these financial¥Stalemenls are rovnded to the nearest £.
The accounts are pyesenled for the period 1 * October 2022 to 30 September 2023.
b) Going Concem
At the time of approving the finanryal statements. the trustees are not aware of any material
uncertainties about the charws abilty to continue as a going concern and have a reasonable
expectation that the charity has adequate reSoUr￿S to continue in operational existence for the
foreseeable future. Thus the trustees have adopted the going concem basis of accounting in preparing
the financial statements. The Dow-clewer famity has discussed rts intention to continue supporting the
charity with further signfficant donations in the upcoming period. T.le ¢harty also may make .
¢ommrtments to give grants in the upcoming pe￿d. but as at the time of writing the total commitmenls
do not exceed the cUr￿n1 cash at bank held by the d)arity.
Income
Income is recognised when the charity is legalty entitled to it after any perfomance conditions have
been mel. the amounts can be measured reliably. and it is probable that income will be received.

Unrestricted funds are available to spend on actNilies that further any of the purposes of the charty.
Reslricted funds are donations wh￿h the donor has specif*d are to be solely used for particular

Creditors and provisions are recognised where the charity has a present obligation resulting from a
past event that will probably result in the transfer of funds to a third party and the amount due to settle
the obligation can be measured or estimated reliabty. Creditors and provisions are nomialty
recognised at their settlement amount after alk)wing for any discounts due.
Legal slatus of the T￿￿t
The Trust is a charitable company limf(ed by guarantee incorporated in England and Wales and has no
share capital. The registered Offi￿ is Staple House. Eleanors Cross. Dunstable. Bedfordshire LU6 1 SU. In
the event of a wind up or liquidation. its members will guarantee an amunt of £1 each for payment of cosls
and associated charges.
