Objectives and Activities

Summary of the purposes of the charity as set out in its governing document	Para 1.17	- The advancement of education throughout England and Wales for the public benefit through the provision of supplementary tutorials to increase the basic literacy and numeracy skills of disadvantaged families. - The relief of financial hardship among people living in Sri Lanka by providing such persons with goods and services which they could not otherwise afford through lack of means.

Para 1.17 and 1.19	A tutoring service is offered to disadvantaged students in the UK with the aim of improving social mobility. Furthermore, the main public benefit is achieved through grants to families in Sri Lanka, helping to alleviate hardship and advance education in a developing country, which has been affected by several years of civil war. Grants are targeted in the area of education, small business development and healthcare.

Policy on grant making		the organisation seeks the support of parents and ensures that they are committed to the education of their child. This will ensure the proper use of funds and ensures that it is not used for other short-term spending. During 2022, we supported one-off healthcare and relief projects in Sri Lanka as the economic crisis worsened. This included supporting a food bank project and the installation of ventilation equipment at a private hospital.

Para 1.20	In 2022, Uthavum Karam continued on the success of its first year, with a strong base of volunteers providing online tutoring classes even as Covid-19 restrictions lifted. This ensured a steady stream of income which was distributed to families in Sri Lanka, who received regular monthly grants for educational fees. The charity received a large one-off donation in March 2023 from the charitable arm of Lycamobile, which will ensure the financial security of the charitable reserves for the foreseeable future. This donation also helped facilitate one-off projects relating to healthcare and food security in Sri Lanka.
