Students gain confidence and a passion for learning that comes from being assigned with a senior tutor. The ultimate financial benefit from donations is for families in Sri Lanka, helping to alleviate hardship and advance education in a developing country, which has been affected by several years of civil war.

Policy on grant making	Para 1.38	Although the financial grants are used to support the education of children in Sri Lanka, the organisation seeks the support of parents and ensures that they are committed to the education of their child. This will ensure the proper use of funds and ensures that it is not used for other short-term spending. The organisation also seeks to provide long-term support to the recipient families. This building of a two-way relationship is established at the outset, and is another criterion which is used to differentiate between families. Such a model will also be applied as the charity looks to expand internationally to other countries.

Summary of the main achievements of the charity, identifying the difference the charity’s work has made to the circumstances of its beneficiaries and any wider benefits to society as a whole.	Para 1.20	2021 was the year in which Uthavum Karam became established as a charity, with the focus on building a core base of volunteers for fundraising efforts. Funds were raised through the remote tutoring services, which operated throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, offering young, disadvantaged students with supplementary education. Overseas, the organisation identified families in Sri Lanka who had been affected by Civil War and required continual support to fund further education or job opportunities. Towards the second half of 2021, funds were being regularly transferred to these families on a monthly.
