## **Report of the Trustees For the Accounting Period 17[th] February 2024 to 16[th] February 2025 Mission Statement** 

We believe that all young people and their families have a right to access and participate in musical and related arts.  Music Matters North East was created to raise funds to increase the chances of young people and their families in the North East to do this.  Our model of action is to support musicians and tutors to offer a range of opportunities in North East areas of deprivation and so develop an interest in music 

## **Activities** 

Our principal delivery project is “Music in Mind”, working with three community groups that reflect the demographic diversity of the west end of Newcastle upon Tyne.  They comprise the worst 1% of lower super output areas and are among the most deprived areas of England.  All activities were tailored to the groups’ preferences and help to improve: 

- Well-being. 

- Community cohesion. 

and create tangible, sustainable, positive benefits to the communities and participants. 

## **How we work** 

At this stage of Music Matters North East’s development, the Trustees have continued to believe that the best model for achieving our goals is contracting with a local Community Interest Company to provide experienced musicians who have the organisational skills to facilitate, tutor, and support the community groups as identified. 

Further funding was secured from the _National Lottery Community Fund Awards for All_ programme in early 2023 and we were able to continue our partnership with _Unlock Music CIC_ , to deliver sessions with the three identified groups during the year. 

It may be that in the future, should we attract larger donations/grants and/or longer-term funding our delivery model will change. 




## **Report of the Trustees For the Accounting Period 17[th] February 2024 to 16[th] February 2025 Our work** 

At one community centre, children aged between 5-13 continued to take part in a mixture of group music workshops and personalised tuition across the year, where they learned the basics of playing a variety of instruments (drums, woodwind, and keyboards). As part of the group work, they then worked together to learn how to play collective pieces of music, rehearsing each week, before going into a local recording studio, where they recorded these pieces of music. These recordings have been released on the Unlock Music CIC Spotify account. 

## **Funding** 

The failure of bids that were developed towards the end of the year meant that the Charity’s work started this financial year with just the small remaining balance from the National Lottery Community Fund Awards for All grant to complete the work early in the financial year 2025/2026. 

Plans to develop new bids were severely hit by the serious illness of the Chair, which continues to this day.  The Board has been considering the future for the Charity. The outcome of these deliberations will be subject of the coming year’s report. 

## **Support, voluntary help and gifts in kind** 

The trustees remain very grateful to the small number of voluntary donors of both cash and musical instruments - that can be loaned to participants either short or long-term or used by participants in sessions – and to volunteers who have helped with branding and digital media development. We have been able to donate pre-loved instruments to one community centre. And, of course, we are indebted to the National Lottery Community Fund Awards for All for their funding which has enabled work achieved to date.
