About the Natalie Kate Moss Trust
The Natalie Kate Moss Trust (NKMT) was set up in 2012 by the Moss family after the sudden death of Natalie at the age of 26 from a Brain Haemorrhage. The trust supports, and generates funds for, ground-breaking research into the prevention and treatment of brain haemorrhages at Manchester University.
Unfortunately, regarding brain haemorrhage research, very little has changed over the last few decades, in contrast to many other conditions. Within one month only one out of five patients will survive after intracerebral haemorrhage, with two out of five patients surviving at 5 years, a statistic that has not changed in 40 years. In contrast breast cancer survival has doubled in that same period, with four out of five patients surviving at 10 years. We therefore desperately need a breakthrough to improve outcomes after intracerebral haemorrhage.
NKMT also works to prevent brain haemorrhages before they happen through its prevention campaign which focuses on the management of blood pressure. High blood pressure is one of the leading causes of lifestyle related brain haemorrhages, yet a third of the population has high blood pressure and 50% of those people are undiagnosed.
Public Benefit: To reduce the number of cases of hypertension and therefore the number of cases of haemorrhagic stroke, whilst also improving the outcomes for patients who do experience a brain haemorrhage.
How the Natalie Kate Moss Trust is Run and Objectives
The Charity is run on a day-to-day basis by a small team inclusive of (NKMT Director, Fiona Moss, a Fundraising Manager, Fundraising Officer, Marketing Manager, Social Media Manager and Grants Manager). All members of the team are freelance.
The team, along with the support of the trustees, work strategically to fulfil three main objectives of the charity:
-
Generating funds to support – and grow - the research at The University of Manchester to develop treatments to improve outcomes for haemorrhagic stroke patients
-
Increase the education and awareness around brain haemorrhages
-
Prevent, potentially preventable brain haemorrhages from happening through education and awareness around the importance of better blood pressure management

NKMT also ran several activities to support their prevention campaign including:
-
Lunch and Learn Sessions (visiting businesses to talk about the importance of blood pressure management)
-
Public Blood Pressure Awareness Days
