Reach Family Project has seen growth and positive outcomes across both our departments at Reach, Befriending and Children and families with a breakdown of what each department has achieved below. Alongside which we have worked together across the Charity to carry out a Christmas gift appeal and 2 half term lunch events. These have been well attended with much positive feedback received. During 2022, our Children & Families project has seen many positive engagements with families and agencies throughout the community. Almost all regular and ongoing engagements with families have come through our Parenting courses and Drop In sessions. Over the course of the year we have run 4 Parenting courses, where parents/carers from 21 families have been able to increase their skills and knowledge, not only in parenting but also in healthy eating and taking part in weekly physical activities with the whole family. In total 68 people have benefitted from the courses, which have all had fantastic feedback from both the attendees and the referrers. It is intended that the courses will continue through 2023, thanks to the agreement of Bolton CVS, allowing us to continue to use unspent restricted funds. After a slow start, the Drop In sessions which started in February, are now mostly well attended. It was decided to move the location to Deepdale Community Centre to run the sessions as this is more centrally placed. Sessions are also now weekly rather than fortnightly. These changes have proved to be the right move as families are now attending more regularly, with some bringing new people along. We were successful in being awarded a small grant from Bolton at Home and this was used to pay sessional costs and refreshments. A small amount of unrestricted funds was used to purchase toys, books, games and arts & crafts materials for the use of both the parents/carers and the children who attend the sessions. Towards the end of 2022, we were contacted by the Head Teacher of Raise the Youth Foundation and are now working with them delivering an 8 week ‘Mindfulness Course’. It is hoped that through 2023, further contacts will be made with a variety of agencies who can provide both one off and short courses to the group according to the attendees wants and needs. This year we held our first ‘proper’ children’s Christmas Party with a visit from the ‘Man’ himself. One of our volunteers completed a sponsored silence and raised funds towards the cost, with the remaining money needed coming from our unrestricted funds. Despite the heavy snowfall on the day the party was a huge success, with 56 people attending (34 children & 22 adults) and getting into the Christmas spirit. There was food, games, dancing and prizes and every child got a present from Father Christmas. It was so lovely to see everybody there laughing and smiling the whole time, then leaving the party excited for Christmas. The Christmas Party is now set to happen every year and money will need to be secured throughout the year to fund it. This will most likely be from small fundraising activities and requested donations. Partnering with Community Locker and Kings Church, along with numerous businesses who acted as drop off points, our Christmas Gift Appeal this year was, once again, a huge success. The numbers speak for themselves and really highlight how our ‘communities’ come together to provide for children and the elderly: 1229 gifts given out, 252 children supported, 104 families helped and 81 elderly all receiving gifts. The day of the Gift Appeal was fantastic; Parents/carers came to choose the gifts for their children and were invited to have a hot drink and festive snacks in our ‘cafe’ area. Free gift wrapping was available to all and the feedback forms completed highlighted the overwhelming positive thanks and gratitude of those attending, with many saying how much of a difference it will make to their children’s Christmas and some even saying without this their children would have nothing to wake up to on Christmas day. The ‘cafe’ area was a great success, so much so that many parents had to wait for a seat and stand with their refreshments. This has made it very clear that next year more space is needed, so the event will be run in the main building. One of the founders of Reach, who is also a Trustee, has decided it is now time to retire and take some time for herself. She has played an active part throughout the entire Reach journey and has made more impact on the families she has come into contact with, than she will ever know. She has worked alongside our Children & Families Project Manager along the way, delivering Parenting Courses, Drop In sessions, Home Support and much more. She will be greatly missed but reassures us that she will continue to volunteer at events such as the Gift Appeal…we will hold her to that! This change will bring some challenges in support for the Project Manager, who already solely carries C&F. In regards to Parenting Courses it is hoped that the Befriending Safeguarding Lead will complete the training to become a Course facilitator. Unfortunately, 2022 saw recurring challenges to recruit new volunteers. This has led to the temporary stoppage of Home Support to be continued for a further period. After some discussion it was decided that efforts would be focused on securing funding to cover the salary of a part-time Project Worker. This worker would provide weekly home support for a number of families and also assist the Project Manager in other duties. Training is one area that Reach, as a whole, will focus on throughout 2023. The numbers speak for themselves, but alongside this our heart of ‘always going the extra mile’ has ensured we haven’t just grown numerically but also in the impact we have in the lives of the Elderly who we support. Our Pastoral project that we launched this year has enabled us to build on the support already offered to the most vulnerable which included providing a weekly hot meal. This year we have gone further to introduce a Pastoral team and support worker who acts as an interim befriender for those aged 85+ or with no support at all ensuring they don’t have to wait to be matched, responding quickly to the loneliness experienced by those most vulnerable.** **Reach Befriending is much more than just a befriending project. Our vision is to make sure no one ever feels forgotten in their elderly age but instead know they are valued and cared about. We want to inspire the communities we are in to take responsibility for showing their elderly neighbours that they are valued and cared about not forgotten.** ## **CASE STUDY** ## **George, 90** **George was referred to us as he had no immediate family and although still very independent, he often found himself feeling vulnerable and worried, particularly about the rising cost of living. Due to his age, we fast tracked George so he was seen within a week and one of our team was able to quickly make contact, visit George at home and offer him a weekly hot meal. It also became apparent quickly that George was walking to and from the cash machine alone and feeling extremely vulnerable so our team member began to accompany him to collect his money from the cashpoint so he didn’t feel as vulnerable whilst maintaining his own independence that means so much to him. Around Christmas time it became apparent that George was sitting cold in his living room and choosing to go to bed most of the day to try and stay warm. Our pastoral support worker was able to provide a warm blanket to which he has since reported that he now feels happier and warm whilst sat watching TV. George now has a regular befriender and they have built a great relationship. She pops in to check on him daily and our Pastoral team continue to offer support as and when needed to make sure we are providing as much support as possible and to make sure he knows he is valued and cared about.** **WHAT WE OFFER** ## **1:1 Befriending** **We are very proud of how our 1:1 Befriending service has grown over the past 12 months. We work closely with local GPs, NHS services, Churches and other community groups who refer to us some of the most elderly and vulnerable individuals across the whole of Bolton. These service users are then matched with one of our volunteer befrienders who lives within their local postcode area to support our idea of neighbours looking after neighbours. Most often these matches lead to real friendships. We continue to be extremely proud of the impact this service has been having on reducing the effects of loneliness in our service users.** ## **Tuesday Social Group** **We are piloting a group at present where service users and people in the local area aged over 55 are invited to come together in a warm space to encourage social interaction, particularly for those most lonely but who are mobile enough to leave their home. A hot meal is offered for free to everyone who attends and we offer a selection of activities. So far we have seen attendees forging friendships with people they would likely never have met due to their current level of social isolation.** ## **Hot Meal Delivery** **Our most isolated and vulnerable service users are offered a weekly hot meal delivered to their home free of charge. This also offers us a chance outside of planned weekly visits, through the company who delivers the meals, to perform a second welfare check on our most vulnerable.** ## **Above and Beyond** **We aim to go above and beyond for all our service users by showing love and care all the time but particularly in times of difficulty or sorrow. It might be a card to mark an anniversary of a lost loved one, essential food delivered on return from a hospital stay or a trip out to the beach or a coffee shop simply to show we care. Christmas is one of the periods that we find can be sad for many people who we support due to family members living a long distance away, the recent loss of a loved one or simply the overwhelming sadness of being lonely. We make sure everyone we care for receives a gift over the Christmas period to remind them they are not forgotten but loved and thought of by someone. We also deliver Christmas food hampers to people who we are aware are expecting to spend Christmas day alone.
